Abstract

Background: β-thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder characterized by reduced or no synthesis of β globin chain, resulting in chronic anemia, so blood transfusion is required as curative therapy. Repeated blood transfusions lead to iron overload that can lead to multiple organ damage, including pancreatic organs. Objective: This study aimed to describe HbA1c and insulin levels of β-thalassemia patients. The study also tested whether there was a significant difference in insulin and HbA1c levels among patients with different β-thalassemia categories. Method: This research was an analytic observational study. The samples were taken by total sampling and involved 30 patients, and the examination was carried out using the patient's blood plasma.Result: The study found that samples had low HbA1c levels. There was no significant mean difference (p>0.05) between insulin and HbA1c in the mild, moderate, and severe clinical degree groups. There was no significant difference in average (p>0.05) insulin and HbA1c in the thalassemia sufferers with allele β+ and β0 types. Conclusion: There was a decrease in insulin and HbA1c in patients with β-thalassemia, which may be caused by damage pancreatic organ damage.

Abstract

Background: Despite increased global attention to early childhood development, children under 5 in low- and middle-income countries face heightened risks of poor developmental outcomes. In Indonesia, where innovative approaches to nurturing care are needed, video-based interventions show promise.Purpose: This study aimed to elevate maternal competence in parenting and contribute to the holistic development of children aged 0-3 years through video-based nurturing care education.Method: Non-equivalent quasi-experimental design with pre-post-test control groups was employed. This study used a consecutive sampling technique on 89 mothers with children 0-3 years old (intervention group = 40 and control group = 49). The intervention group was given health education using videos via a WhatsApp link, and the control group was given leaflets directly. Data was collected from May to August 2022, four weeks before the intervention (pre-test) and two weeks after the video and leaflets were given (post-test). The instrument was modified from the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) questionnaire developed by UNICEF. The effect of education was analyzed using Wilcoxon and independent t-test.Results: The group that received the intervention showed a notable and positive influence on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP levels) in contrast to the control group. This suggests the video-based intervention effectively enhanced participants' understanding, attitudes, and caregiving practices. Conclusion: The research emphasizes the positive outcomes of video-based nurturing care intervention for mothers with children aged 0-3 years. The intervention significantly improved maternal attitudes toward parenting, caregiving behaviors, and overall child development. These results emphasize the significance of employing video interventions to encourage effective nurturing care practices.

Abstract

Background: A perineal tear affects around 85% of women who give birth vaginally. Previous animal research has demonstrated the beneficial effects of turmeric extract gel on wound healing, which speeds up the process of repairing wounded tissue. However, since this research is only in vivo, more studies and clinical trials are required to evaluate the efficacy of using turmeric extract gel to treat perineal lacerations.Purpose: To analyze the potential of turmeric extract gel (Curcuma Longa Linn.) in reducing REEDA score and IL-6 levels in postpartum women.Method: This is a quasi-experiment study with pretest–posttest with control group design. The study respondents comprised 20 people in the intervention group who were given turmeric extract gel and amoxicillin and 20 in the control group who were given amoxicillin for seven days. Measurement of wound healing using the REEDA score while IL-6 levels using ELISA. Data analysis of used Friedman and Wilcoxon tests. Results: There was a significant decrease in the intervention group's REEDA score and IL-6 levels (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in the average decrease in REEDA score and IL-6 levels between the two groups (p<0.05). The administration of turmeric extract gel led to faster wound healing for two days compared to the control group, which was only given standard treatment. Conclusion: Turmeric extract gel can reduce REEDA score and IL-6 levels.

Abstract

Background: Acoustic music therapy has been shown to have an impact on reducing anxiety and stress, but not specifically on various stages of dementia and sleep quality in the elderly. This research could explore how acoustic music therapy can provide similar benefits in elderly patients with dementia, where sleep and quality of life problems are often primary concerns. Objective: To determine the effect of acoustic music therapy on improving cognitive function and sleep quality in elderly dementia patients.Method: A pre-experimental design employing a one-group pretest-posttest without a control group was utilized. The sampling method employed was purposive sampling, involving 30 selected respondents. The paired sample t-test was then applied for the statistical analysis. Results:  The average dementia score among the elderly increased by 4.36 points (16.17 ± 5.53 to 20.53 ± 4.14) after the intervention. Similarly, the average score for sleep disorders decreased by -0.4 points (7.07 ± 3.11 to 6.67 ± 1.92). The statistical analysis indicated a significant influence of acoustic music on dementia disorders in elderly individuals with sleep disorders (p<0.0001). However, acoustic music did not affect sleep disorders in the elderly (p>0.05).Conclusion: Acoustic music therapy benefits the elderly, particularly in managing dementia and sleep disorders. These findings emphasize the potential of music therapy as a valuable non-pharmacological alternative in the overall care of the elderly.
