Abstract

Leachate, which comes from waste landfills, contains high levels of organic and inorganic matter. Constructed Wetland technology is a suitable alternative for leachate treatment. This technology is easy to apply, relatively cost-effective, and can achieve optimal reduction results for treating and controlling leachate, thereby reducing its environmental impact. The objective of this study was to treat the BOD concentration and COD in leachate using a Constructed Wetland. Data collection was performed by conducting leachate experiments for Constructed Wetland treatment using Hippochaetes lymenalis plants based on variations in residence time and media height. There was a control group (R1) without any media or plants. The variation combination included R2 (containing 10 cm gravel and 10 cm fertile soil) and R3 (containing 5 cm gravel and 15 cm fertile soil). Residence times were set at 0, 7, 14, and 21 d. This research showed that the reactor with growth media consisting of 10 cm gravel and 10 cm fertile soil had 55% and 85% BOD and COD removal efficiencies, with final BOD concentrations and COD values of 273 mg/L and 1,321, respectively. The reactor with growth media consisting of 5 cm gravel and 10 cm fertile soil had 74% and 95% BOD and COD removal efficiency, with the final BOD concentration and COD at 159 mg/L and 432, respectively.

Abstract

Discussions about environmental issues, one that has become quite the topic of conversation this decade is related to global warming, for example related to waste. Garbage has a significant contribution to environmental damage. The issue of global warming is an emerging and growing issue. The purpose of the research is to understand the proprietary strategy of Griya Luhu's in delivering environmental campaign digital waste banks at Rural Area. Environmental communication is one of the advocacy efforts. Environmental campaign advocacy is the act of persuading or arguing in favor of a particular cause, policy, idea or set of values on an issue. Advocacy is a powerful medium for various social and environmental change organizations. Existing environmental campaign advocacy all this time only focuses on urban areas. Economic limitations and waste issues become the main reason why Griya Luhu, an NGO Bali-Indonesia based, wants to give environmental campaigns to rural communities on Bali island through their program called Digital Bank Sampah (Waste Digital Bank). This research is done with an in-depth interview with the Chairman dan members of Griya Luhu. The outcome of this research shows that Griya Luhu uses various strategies, including a communal approach, raising environmental issues, and empowering the community during the program Waste Digital Bank. Griya Luhu's primary strategy is empowering the community, especially in rural areas. The form of their empowerment is to push the people to be able to use digital technology and want to make waste bank work more transparent. Thus the community is more concerned with the environment, especially the problem of waste

Abstract

Coastal areas possess a diverse potential wealth of natural resources that can be developed and utilized by humans, such as fisheries, marine tourism, and transportation. One form of disruption to the balance of coastal and marine ecosystems is the pollution caused by waste. The Karimunjawa Islands face serious challenges related to waste pollution. Therefore, an identification of carried out regarding the composition of polluting waste as well as impacts or disruptions caused by marine waste pollution on the mangrove ecosystem in the coastal areas of Karimunjawa Island and Kemujan Island. Various types of waste were found at the research site, including plastic, metal, glass, rubber, organic, and others. Based on the enteri locations of Karimunjawa Island and Kemujan Island, 370 items of plastic waste and macro-debris amounted to 442, predominantly on Lumbung Beach. The dominant mangrove is Rhizophora sp., which has muddy sandy substrate. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that this waste situation makes the coastal areas of Karimunjawa Island and Kemujan Island vulnerable to environmental pollution problems. The impact on the environment is a decrease in benthic biota density owing to the abundance of waste. The higher the density of waste, the lower the density of benthic species found in the mangrove ecosystemenvironment.

Abstract

Global climate change caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is currently a focus for various countries worldwide, including Indonesia. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main source of emissions, with a significant portion originating in urban areas. This is due to the high levels of air pollution from motor vehicles and rapid industrial growth. Urban green spaces are areas within cities that consist of non-built-up spaces filled with naturally grown or cultivated vegetation. These green spaces exist directly alongside the transportation infrastructure, which helps reduce air pollution, especially CO2, through the vegetation that makes up these areas. One type of urban green space is a green corridor, which forms elongated paths or areas. This study assessed the carbon sequestration of 17 primary road networks in Pontianak City using three allometric models. Plot positions for data collection were determined using purposive sampling, with each side accounting for 5% of the total zigzag plots. This research focused on vegetation at different growth stages, such as saplings, poles, and trees. The results were estimated at 256.86 tons ha-1 (Hardiansyah and Ridwan formula), 269.96 tons ha-1 (Chave formula), and 193 tons ha-1 (Brown formula).

Abstract

Rhinoceros hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros) are a bird species belonging to the Bucerotidae family, which is vulnerable based on the IUCN red list of species. This is due to habitat fragmentation, which reduced the Rhinoceros hornbill habitat on Java. Efforts and strategies are needed to maintain Rhinoceros hornbill habitats. Information on the suitability of the Rhinoceros hornbill habitat on Java Island is required to develop a Rhinoceros hornbill conservation strategy. This study aimed to determine a habitat suitability model that produces the highest accuracy, analyze hornbill habitat suitability, and identify environmental variables that affect the existence of rhinoceros hornbills. Habitat suitability models were processed using three algorithms: random forest, support vector regression, and MaxEnt. The data used to model habitat suitability were presence and environmental variables. The model was evaluated using various accuracy measures, namely overall accuracy, sensitivity (sn), specificity (sp), Area Under Curve (AUC), and kappa coefficient. The resultsof model processing showed that the random forest algorithm produced the highest average accuracy of 0.74. The most important environmental variables for the habitat suitability model were the distance from the road (16.62%), distance from the forest (12.73%), and land cover (12.47%). The habitat suitability model was divided into three classes: low suitability, covering 75,048 km2 (55.94%); medium suitability, covering 52,911 km2 (39.44%); and high suitability, covering 6,213 km2 (4.63%). The results of the habitat suitability model showed that the habitat suitability class was the smallest in the area.

Abstract

The Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) is found only in the Tapanuli area. This species includes protected and endangered animals and has a very limited distribution. An important component of animal management is feed availability. This study aims to assess the diversity of food in the Tapanuli orangutan at the Tapanuli Research Station Plan, Batu Satail, Sipirok District. Research was carried out in November 2021 by conducting a vegetation analysis on 3 predetermined paths. The results showed that in this area, there were 91 plant species from 42 families, of which 29 species (31.87%) were orangutan food. However, the highest plant importance index value is dominated by nonfood plants.

Abstract

Sampah menjadi isu lingkungan karena jumlahnya yang semakin meningkat. Jenis sampah yang saat ini menjadi permasalahan penting adalah sampah plastik, karena dapat membahayakan makhluk hidup dan lingkungannya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor partisipasi masyarakat yang berpengaruh terhadap pengelolaan sampah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode wawancara dan pengisian kuesioner sebanyak 50 responden di Kecamatan Baleendah. Data yang telah terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan metode Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) dengan pendekatan beberapa variabel laten yang masing-masing dilengkapi indikatornya. Evaluasi model SEM-PLS diuji melalui Model Pengukuran dan Model Struktural. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada model pengukuran seluruh indikator valid dan reliabel dalam mengukur konstruk yang dibangun. Pada model struktural hasil pengujian hipotesis dengan metode bootstrapping dapat disimpulkan bahwa variabel Faktor Eksternal dan Penanganan Sampah secara signifikan memengaruhi variabel Pengelolaan Sampah, variabel Pengelolaan Sampah secara signifikan memengaruhi variabel Dampak Pengelolaan Sampah, sedangkan variabel Pengurangan Sampah memengaruhi secara tidak signifikan terhadap variabel Pengelolaan Sampah.

Abstract

Macassar ebony (Diospyros celebica Bakh.) is an endemic tree species native to Sulawesi. To date, there are limited comprehensive publications regarding its genome assembly. In this study, we employed paired-end libraries of HiSeq 4000 Illumina, generating 141.2 million paired-end reads (42.4 Gigabases). Our analysis revealed the presence of 950,081 Scaffolds, with an N50 value of 6,023. Notably, BUSCO analysis identified 183 (12.7%) complete and single-copy BUSCOs (S), as well as 9 (0.6%) complete and duplicated BUSCOs (D). Furthermore, we identified 12,890 microsatellites within the Macassar Ebony genome. These microsatellites encompass 14 dinucleotide SSR motifs, 12,090 trinucleotide SSRs, 780 tetranucleotide SSR motifs, and 6 pentanucleotide SSRs. This dataset represents a valuable resource for assessing Macassar Ebony genetic makeup in its natural habitats and for subsequent analyses of the Macassar Ebony genome.

Abstract

Amidst the rapid urbanization of Jakarta, the adoption of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) like composting offers a sustainable pathway for waste management and environmental rejuvenation. This research endeavors to discern the critical factors impacting the willingness of Jakarta's metropolitan populace to participate in composting activities. The study identified key determinants through a comprehensive analysis, including the availability of composting facilities, the expertise of trained cadres, the adoption of advanced composting technologies, and routine field monitoring. Furthermore, demographic nuances, specifically marital status, and age, surfaced as influential parameters. Singles and the younger age bracket (20-29 years) exhibited distinct attitudes towards composting, hinting at underlying generational and lifestyle-based disparities. The findings provide a foundation for tailoring policies and interventions that cater to Jakarta's unique urban fabric, promoting a more inclusive and influential composting culture.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate vulnerability assessments along the coastal area and small island of Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This paper used spatial analysis to estimate the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI). An assessment of CVI was carried out using eight parameters to build into five categories, with very low to very high category vulnerability. Coastal vulnerability in the Kolaka coastal area varies from a very low to a very high category. Hence, this study suggests that policymakers need to make a long-term plan for local coastal zones, and they should prioritize a precision disaster-based analysis to minimize the damage caused by the disaster in the future.
