Abstract

This research discusses discoveries, denotatives, connotatives and myths in literary works, a novel entitled The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. The theory used is the concept of semiotics according to Roland Barthes who proposed the concept of the developed theory from Ferdinand de Saussure developed by Barthes which was designed to determine denotatives, connotative and myth to the theory which means a way of interpreting fiction and non-fiction. Because the object of this research is a written work (fiction), no field survey was carried out and only library research. The subject of the author's focus is Denotative, Connotative and Myth that appear in the figure of Mary Magdalene narrated in this novel. Documentation is used with the terms of findings and savings the datum that consider as the one that can be identified and analyzied by the researchers. The researchers try to open, analyse and describe the figure of Mary Magdalene that is related with Christianity, Jesus and the Holy Grail using Barthes. The result or the output of the research is that there are five data containing and considering as the example of Barthes concept of Denotation, Connotatioan dan Myth with several reasonings. In this case, identifying an object is the figure of Maria Magdalene in the Novel The Da Vinci Code.Keywords: Myth, Maria Magdalene, Holy Grail, Barthes

Abstract

This article employs a cognitive semantic analysis with the aim to describe the types of metaphors and conceptual meanings based on conceptual metaphor theory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), and image schemes based on image scheme theory by Cruse and Croft (2004) on the electronic newspaper Kompas. Data source in this research are taken from the technology rubric of the electronic newspaper Kompas on the March 2020 edition. We use descriptive qualitative method to conduct the reseach. The result shows that there are 16 data found of conceptual metaphor, there are nine data of structural metaphor with the conceptual meaning of enemy, leader, and human; four data of orientational metaphor with the concept of meaning of space and quality, and three data of ontological metaphor with the concept of meaning of money and fame. For the image scheme, there are four types that are found, 5 data of force scheme, 6 data of existence scheme, 1 data of container scheme, and 4 data of space scheme. Keywords: Conceptual metaphor, cognitive semantic, technology rubric of Kompas.com

Abstract

Lexical Interference commonly happens in a bilingualism society. The People of Dayak Bidayuh in the Badat Lama village is a part of bilingualism society. The languages that they used are the Bidayuh dialect and the Malaysia language. Most of the Badat Lama People masters the languages but not all of them. The adult masters the languages mostly. The mastering of Malaysia language affects their competence of Bahasa. The aim of this research is to analyze the error of speaking in Bahasa. The error that are being analysed are in word, phrase, and structure and they are called as lexical interference. This research used a qualitative and quantitative method and it was a survey research. The collecting data technique of this research was by interview record. The result of it shows that there are 17 respondents of 25 adult respondents do the lexical interference either, word, phrase, and structure. Then, eight of 25 adult respondents do not do lexical interference. And then, only one adult respondent cannot speak in Bahasa. It concludes that amount 68% of the adult respondents in Badat Lama did the Lexical Interference.Keywords: Lexical Interfernce, Badat Lama, Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the writing strategy of the second semester students of University Muhammadiyah of Purwokerto in the academic year 2015/2016. The method was qualitative descriptive. There were 57 students of the second semester  students as the subject of the research. However, the data collection was collected through questionaire. The result was likely about the percentage from the questionaire. In preparation step, 49% respondents admitted that they use cognitive strategy, they looked for the information they wanted to write and also collected some vocabularies before writing. In the second item, there were 60% respondents who have social strategy. Therefore, if they have problem in their writing, they will ask their friends. Cognitive strategy is also used by 67% respondents, it happened when the students said that grammar was the part from their writing in which it was the most often to be corrected. Moreover, cognitive strategy again was used by 84% and 54% when they did not know about grammar and word from their writing, they would open grammar book and dictionary. The last, there were 46% respondents had cognitive and social strategy, that was about to use internet or social media as the additional source outside class.    Keywords: writing strategy, cognitive, metacognitive, social

Abstract

This study was conducted to explain the communicative acts and phonologicalprocesses of Cebuano-English speaking children in interacting with their parent duringfree play, using video-tape recorder. It is a qualitative and quantitative method of the 4 male Cebuano- English speaking children aged 4 years old residing in Palompon, Leyte. The research result showed that the most occurring communicative acts were obliging andcontrol acts. Abstract

This article aims to (1) describe the characteristics of gender based auditory learning modalities, (2) to investigate the supporting aspects of the students’ listening abilities, and (3) to tell the students’ abilities to listen to gender-based texts. This research implements qualitative approach and study case methods. The subject includes fifth grade students of Cigugur state school V. The data was collected through literature studies, observation, interviews, documentation, and fieldnotes. The validity of the data is checked through the data credibility and dependability. The data were analyzed with a reduction of the data, data description, and conclusions. The characteristics of male students’ stereotype is showing an independent character, strong personality, and ambitious. The stereotype for female students includes cheerful, spoiled, and obedient. The supporting aspects for the listening abilities include physical aspect, psychological aspects, gender, and media. In addition, the listening ability of the female students are considered more advanced. Keywords: listening abilities, gender

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the form of abreviation and function of the register language in the Facebook group "Buy and Sell Anything Cilegon Serang Banten". The method used in this research is qualitative method. As for the data collected through library study techniques, refer to the basic tapping techniques and advanced techniques of free and accountable, note taking, and documentation techniques. The data obtained are classified based on the form of abreviation and register language functions. Based on the results of the study found 4 forms of abreviation consisting of 1) abbreviations, 2) acronyms, 3) fragments, and 4) letter symbols. In addition, 5 language functions were found consisting of 1) instrumental functions, 2) representational functions, 3) interactional functions, 4) personal functions, and 5) heuristic functions. The results of this study can be implemented in Indonesian language learning in high school, especially in negotiating text learning.Keywords: Facebook, register, form of abreviation, language functions

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the types of directive speech acts in the film entitled Mary Queen of Scots, the way the speakers expressed those types, and the reasons underlying the speakers to utter those types. This research uses Pragmatics approach. This study was designed with descriptive research. The analyzed data were all the dialogs which expressed the types of directive speech acts of Mary Queen of Scots film. The total sampling technique is used in taking the data analysis. The researcher analyzed the data found in the film based on problem statements. First, the findings are as follows 6 types of directive speech acts consisting of Command, 13 data (42%), Request 3 data (16%), Question 9 data (30%), Suggestion 2 data (6%), Prohibition 1 datum (3%), and Warning 1 datum (3%). Second, three ways of expressing politeness strategies are used by the characters in Mary Queen of Scots. They were Bald On-Record, Positive Politeness, and Off-Record. At last, the reasons characters expressed the directive speech act were to show hearer’s duty, to show anger expression, to respect the hearer, to seek agreement, and find the reason for uttering certain expression. Keywords: pragmatics, directive, speech acts, politeness strategies, film.

Abstract

This article discusses the semantics, of three Japanese time signifiers, namely toki, sai, and atatte. Those lexemes are synonymous. However, in particular context, they are not interchangeable. This research aims to (1) find the meaning of those three lexemes, (2) to investigate the difference among those three, and (3) to describe why those lexemes appear in Japanese vocabulary. The meaning component is analyzed using interview and reference studies method. After that, meaning component of those lexeme is analyzed using substitution method to find the difference. The result of this research is that those three lexemes have the same sense as lexeme that related to time. In addition, those three lexemes have common component that are jikoku (when or time) and formality. Yet, in other contexts those lexemes are not interchangeable because each lexeme has supplement component that becomes its characteristic. This supplement component causes those three lexemes to be not interchangeable in some particular contexts. The needs of special meaning of those three lexemes in a sentence causing those lexemes exist in Japanese vocabulary.Keywords: Japanese, time signifier, toki, sai, atatte, synonym

Abstract

The study aims at exploring functions, meaning, and pragmatic effects of co-occurrences of I mean and conjunctions in British National Corpus. The study applied some principles of a corpus study. I mean collocates with 5 conjunctions namely because, but, coz, when, and if. The collocations function to make the ideas clear in order to make the hearers understand them easily and avoid misunderstanding. They, moreover, are used when the speakers give corrections. They are uttered to emphasize arguments and give information as detailed as possible. These collocations in discourse make the hearers aware of information given and finally they pay special attention to the message.
