Abstract

Local wisdom teaches people to live wiser and wiser lives, one of which is manifest in protecting their environment. However, local wisdom that could have been inherited from generation to generation began to be eroded by the flow of modernization and globalization. For this reason, it is very rare to find people who still apply local wisdom as a way of life, including in their efforts to respond to their environment. This has an impact on the increasingly damaged natural environment. For this reason, efforts need to be made to reduce events like this, one of which is by reminding others through novel studies. Thus the need for research with the object of environmental-themed novel studies. This study uses a descriptive comparative method with an ecological approach. The object of the study is a novel entitled Sokola Rimba by Butet Manurung and Sebuah Wilayah yang Tidak Ada di Google Earth by Pandu Hamzah. The purpose of the study is to produce a description of the retention of local wisdom that can anticipate or at least inhibit environmental damage. The results of this study indicate that the community in the novel setting seeks to preserve nature, maintain the harmonization of life with nature through local wisdom that is held firmly. Communities believe in the detrimental effects of natural damage when they forget local wisdom. The local wisdom they hold firm includes knowledge, values, skills, natural resources, decision-making mechanisms, rituals, and local beliefs.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the unconscious connection between the Visayan gods and goddesses and their sacred animals based on the archives of Felipe Landa Jocano?s Outline of Philippine Mythology, Francisco Demeterio?s Towards a Survey of Philippine Folklore and Mythology, and Luzviminda?s blog Visayan Mythologies of the Philippines. The psychoanalytical frameworks of totemism and the collective unconscious drew connections that delineated the cultural symbolism of the animal to its respective deity and linked it further to the values and spheres each deity imparts on the communities that worship it. Through the lens of this theoretical approach, a deep, direct nature of association was extracted between the gods and their sacred animals. Thus, the pre-colonial Visayan communities viewed their animal neighbors as manifestations or totems of divine power that in turn, governs their affairs. An animal that was defined as sacred formed a very essential component of a deity?s identity, and, in consequence, the identity of his or her mortal believers.

Abstract

Subjectivity is a philosophical concept of how one, as a subject, gains the sense of identity through the interaction with the external world. The theorization on the conception of subjectivity itself has ranged from the early modern thinkers to post-modern thinkers. This research’s objectives are to describe the struggle of Stephen Dedalus, the main character in James Joyce’s novel entitled A Portrait of The Artist As A Young Man, to gain his identity as a form of subjectivity, and to describe how the model of subjectivity is reflected through the character of Stephen Dedalus. This research is a descriptive qualitative library research with philosophical approach using Descartes, Kant, Freud and Lacan theories. From the analysis, first, it is found out that Stephen Dedalus underwent a journey of figuring himself out through a series of events that profoundly shape his sense of identity. The involvement of many external factors like the field of art, religion, and nationality is important in constructing Stephen Dedalus’ subjectivity. Secondly, by taking into account the theorization on the idea of subjectivity from the early modern philosophers such as Rene Descartes and Immanuel Kant, to the post-modern philosophers such as Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, it can be seen that Stephen Dedalus’ stream of consciousness as the main tool in perceiving his journey of life embodies the early modern conception that subjectivity is grounded on one’s independent consciousness. Keywords: subjectivity, modernity, philosophy

Abstract

Public health service advertisements (PHSA) tend to provide information, remind, add value, influence, and even change people's attitudes to healthy living. The purpose of this study was to determine the style of language, meaning, and public health service advertising ideology. The results of this study showed that; (1) the Public Health Service Ads (PHSA) language style, (2) the diction or word choice used tends to be informal, general, brief and understandable by ordinary learned societies. Regarding the tone contained, the narrative text had a simple language style, usually suitable to give instructions, commands, lessons, lectures, and the like. From the meaning point of view, semiotic meaning came from the relation between signifier and signified or it was the meaning of connotation. The ideology that lied behind sourced from the resulting connotation. The way to express imperatively as well as the use of symbols, colors, backgrounds (sign) such as thermometers; for instance. This has determined that PHSA concerned with hygiene, health, precautions, caution, caring, togetherness, planning, prosperity, and happiness. Keywords: PHSA, language style, meaning, ideology
