Abstract

This study analyzes tourists' perceptions, satisfaction, and expectations of Southwest Papua's tourist attractions to provide recommendations for improving tourism quality. This study uses qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation through video and photos, to explore tourists' perceptions, satisfaction, and expectations in Southwest Papua. The results of this study are: 1) In the three domains of tourists' perceptions, destination attractions, facilities and services, as well as safety and comfort.  Some tourists generally expressed positive perceptions, appreciating the authenticity of the natural environment and the immersive cultural experiences. However, certain challenges, such as unpredictable weather, accommodations, homestays, and management issues, led to negative perceptions, particularly among tourists from Asia. 2) Emotional and social satisfaction are the highest-rated aspects experienced by nearly all 350 tourists, surpassing functional satisfaction. Their sense of happiness is attributed to effective tour organization, fluent communication by tour leaders, and well-established social interactions with local communities. 3) Tourists expect better facilities and more government involvement in infrastructure and local training to improve the tourism experience. Collaboration between the government and tourist villages will greatly contribute to enhancing the positive values for visiting tourists.

Abstract

Studies reveal concern about students’ decreased motivation in the pandemic online learning, and novice teachers are especially vulnerable in this era as they still have little teaching experiences but have to teach in such a challenging environment. This paper investigates the problems a novice teacher faced in improving elementary students’ motivation during online learning and the motivational strategies she used. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview and presented according to the narrative inquiry design. The results imply that the novice teacher had troubles related to the lack of access to a real-time, face-to-face communication platform that allows direct feedback, students’ low motivation in submitting their tasks, and her lack of teaching experience. The novice teacher had used some motivational strategies which include relating the learning topic with the student's interest and context, utilizing various learning media and material, increasing the students’ expectancy of success, and encouraging positive self-evaluation. The novice teacher had implemented the motivational strategies to some extent and handled the problems quite well; however, there is still a lack of variety in her motivational strategies and a lack of teaching experience. Therefore, the teacher should continuously self-reflect and improve her knowledge and practice, institutions must ensure that novice teachers are not left to adapt on their own, and policies must prioritize equitable access to learning technologies and family engagement strategies to support children’s learning at home.

Abstract

In the dynamic landscape of English as a foreign language education, there is a growing imperative to develop pedagogical approaches that are not only linguistically effective but also culturally inclusive. Addressing this critical need, this study investigated the effectiveness of a local wisdom-based writing task approach in cultivating cognitive literacy among English Department students. The study employed a mixed-methods design, utilizing open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires after intervention. Findings revealed that the integration of local wisdom significantly enhanced student engagement and motivation. Furthermore, the approach effectively fostered the development of cognitive literacy skills, including critical thinking, creativity, and metacognition. Students demonstrated improved planning, organization, and self-reflection in their writing processes. These findings suggest that incorporating local wisdom into task-based writing can be an effective pedagogical approach for enhancing both writing proficiency and cognitive literacy among university students.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate (1) the English competence of Indonesian seafaring cadets, (2) the communication challenges they faced during international onboard training, and (3) the proposed solutions to these challenges. The research employed a mixed-methods approach at Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Makassar (PIP Makassar), involving 29 cadets who recently completed international onboard training. The data were gathered through documentation, open-ended questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. English competence was assessed using descriptive statistical analysis, while communication problems and solutions were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). Findings showed that cadets encountered physical (unclear radio conversations), linguistic (use of substandard English), psychological (lack of confidence), and cultural barriers (different communication styles), despite generally good English competence. Proposed solutions include habituating radio conversations, improving confidence, and adapting globally to various linguistic and cultural communication styles.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of the POSSE (Predict, Organize, Search, Summarize, and Evaluate) Strategy in enhancing students' reading comprehension. This study was carried out at the SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. The research population comprised 66 eighth-grade students. The research used quantitative research, particularly in Quasi-Experimental Design. To get the sample, the researcher employed cluster random sampling. The data was collected using exam items, which included 10 multiple-choice and 5 essay questions. There were pretest and posttest in both groups, and the experimental group received treatment while the control group did not. The results showed the students' mean score of the experimental group (55.64) on the posttest was higher than the score from the control group (31.24) on the posttest. The sig value is calculated using statistical results. With a 2 tailed of 0.000<0.05, it can be determined that there is a significant difference in the mean score of pupils' learning outcomes between the POSSE-based learning model and the usual method taught by the teacher.

Abstract

Scaffolding is a teaching method in which teachers provide structured, temporary support to help students develop independent learning skills gradually. In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), scaffolding is particularly useful in vocabulary acquisition, especially for young learners who are still building basic language skills. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the scaffolding method in increasing students’ vocabulary size at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu. Students in grade VIII participated in this research. Two classes were identified as the control and experimental classes in this quasi-experimental research design. The researcher used a pretest and a posttest to collect data. Subsequently, SPSS version 23 was used to analyze the collected data. The result shows that the posttest mean score for students in the experimental class (78.22) was higher than the mean score in the control class (59.56). Furthermore, based on the result of the independence sample t-test, the sig (2 tailed) value (0.001) was lower than 0.05. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, the scaffolding method can increase the vocabulary size of grade VIII students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu.
