Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of choral and repeated reading strategies in improving the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 20 Sigi. Using a quasi-experimental design, 46 students were selected through cluster random sampling and divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through multiple-choice and essay tests administered before and after the intervention. The experimental group’s mean pretest score was 45.96, increasing to 81.35 post-test, while the control group’s mean rose from 50.30 to 76.04. Statistical analysis showed significant improvement, supported by a two-tailed significance value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient of 0.696. These findings confirm that choral and repeated reading strategies positively impact students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the pivotal role that teacher discourse plays in shaping students’ critical engagement with texts. Within this context, this study investigates how teacher questioning strategies foster critical literacy in language classrooms. Through analysis of theoretical frameworks and empirical research, the study examines the effectiveness of various questioning techniques in developing students' critical thinking abilities. The findings demonstrate that structured questioning frameworks, particularly those incorporating higher-order thinking skills, enhance students' analytical capabilities and text engagement. Additionally, culturally responsive questioning approaches create more inclusive learning environments and empower marginalized voices. These insights inform recommendations for teacher training programs and classroom practices to promote critical literacy through effective questioning strategies.

Abstract

Proficiency in English communication is a critical skill that requires continuous improvement, as it is one of the essential competencies demanded by the professional work of the world and must be mastered by vocational school students. Among these competencies, one of the required abilities is to compose a cover letter for job applications, which is particularly significant. Writing proficiency encompasses an individual's capacity to articulate ideas, concepts, and opinions using appropriate language. However, vocational school students in Batam City continue to experience difficulties in composing application letters in English. This study aims to quantitatively assess the implementation of the synectic learning model in Batam City Vocational Schools. To achieve this objective, researchers conducted an experimental study at SMK Globe National Plus 2 Batam, involving 80 participants. The requisite research data were collected through written assessments and statistically analyzed using SPSS Version 20. The findings indicated that the implementation of the synectic learning model can enhance students' ability to compose application letters. Consequently, the results of this research contribute to the implementation of the synectic learning model in vocational schools in Batam City, with the goal of increasing the preparedness of vocational school graduates for entry into the professional and industrial sectors.

Abstract

In today’s rapidly evolving academic and technological environment, English learners are expected not only to master language skills but also to think critically and communicate effectively. However, many EFL instructional practices still focus heavily on memorization, leaving students underprepared for real-world communication demands. To address this gap, alternative teaching strategies that promote both reasoning and speaking performance are needed. This study investigates the impact of structured debate instruction on the speaking and critical thinking skills of EFL undergraduate students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. Using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, 26 fourth-semester English education students participated in a five-meeting intervention. Their performances were assessed using rubrics adapted from the IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal framework. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, paired samples t-tests. The results showed significant improvement in both speaking and critical thinking skills (p .001). Among the rubric indicators, inference and fluency showed the highest post-test scores, while deduction and grammatical accuracy showed the lowest. These findings suggest that debate can be an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing spontaneous reasoning and communicative clarity in EFL settings, while also highlighting areas that may require additional support.

Abstract

Scaffolding is a teaching method in which teachers provide structured, temporary support to help students develop independent learning skills gradually. In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), scaffolding is particularly useful in vocabulary acquisition, especially for young learners who are still building basic language skills. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the scaffolding method in increasing students’ vocabulary size at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu. Students in grade VIII participated in this research. Two classes were identified as the control and experimental classes in this quasi-experimental research design. The researcher used a pretest and a posttest to collect data. Subsequently, SPSS version 23 was used to analyze the collected data. The result shows that the posttest mean score for students in the experimental class (78.22) was higher than the mean score in the control class (59.56). Furthermore, based on the result of the independence sample t-test, the sig (2 tailed) value (0.001) was lower than 0.05. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, the scaffolding method can increase the vocabulary size of grade VIII students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu.

Abstract

English proficiency can enhance non-native speakers' educational experience by providing them access to a wide range of materials, international conferences, and chances for collaboration. However, acquiring a language can present significant challenges, especially for people who are not native English speakers and those who enter the education system from other nations. The utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and fully automated interactive spoken language (SDS) has the potential to enhance student engagement and facilitate improvements in oral contact and communication. The Chatbot feature of ChatGPT, an AI website, has the potential to enhance language learning by promoting active participation and improving educational achievements. Nevertheless, the efficacy of ChatGPT in catering to the needs of second language (L2) learners can be constrained by their distinct linguistic demands. This project aims to investigate the capacity of ChatGPT to produce reference dialogues tailored for advanced English learners and examine the potential enhancement of dialogue quality through prompting strategies. This study used a mixed method study, which distributed a survey questionnaire and conducted semi-structured interviews with the responders to determine the best prompting technique used in ChatGPT for generating reference dialogue.  Then, the finding of this research showed that most students had a positive perception of using ChatGPT to generate dialogue references. However, some of them had a negative perception in some parts of using ChatGPT to generate dialogue references. Furthermore, ChatGPT was valuable and helpful in generating dialogue references, which helped the students be more confident when they wrote a conversational dialogue.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the collaboration of intercultural edupreneurs’ project-based learning (PjBL) of English for young learners in Bengkulu province. This descriptive qualitative study used observation, interview, and documentation to collect the primary data. The research samples involved five private English courses for young learners as a collaboration of intercultural edupreneurs’ project-based learning (PjBL) that was created by students of the student exchange (PMM) program and English students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. They were B 3nglish, Artery_ECourse, BVJE_Course, OBFiG’s_E Course, and BC.Equal Courses. The research results revealed that the collaboration of intercultural edupreneurs’ project-based learning (PjBL) of English for young learners in Bengkulu province was realized in four dimensions: planning and group decision-making; communicating about thinking; contributing resources, ideas, and efforts; and monitoring processes. In concluding the research, the collaboration of intercultural edupreneurs’ project-based learning (PjBL) of English for young learners is highly facilitated through the project-based learning method, making it an effective approach.
