Abstract

Diabetes mellitus remains a major global health challenge, encouraging the exploration of natural products as alternative therapeutics. Stelechocarpus burahol (kepel), an ethnobotanically significant Indonesian fruit traditionally consumed for its health benefits, represents a promising source of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to integrate ethnobotanical knowledge with molecular insights by identifying potential antidiabetic compounds using an in silico approach. A total of 66 phytochemical compounds were screened through drug-likeness, ADMET, and biological activity prediction, followed by molecular docking against Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) (PDB ID: 6B1E). The docking protocol was validated (RMSD 1.697 Å). Several phenolic compounds showed strong binding affinity, particularly gallocatechol (−8.4 kcal/mol), catechin (−8.2 kcal/mol), and 6-hydroxyluteolin (−8.1 kcal/mol), outperforming the native ligand. These findings highlight the potential of S. burahol as a natural source of DPP-4 inhibitors.

Abstract

Dendrobium capra, an endangered epiphytic species, depends on complex ecological interactions within teak forests. Birds play multifaceted roles: as potential pollinators through ornithogamy, pest control agents maintaining host tree health, seed dispersers for host trees, and habitat quality indicators. Conservation efforts for Dendrobium capra must prioritize bird community preservation to ensure ecological functions supporting this endemic Javanese orchid's life cycle. This study, conducted January–March 2026 using field surveys with point count technique at purposively selected observation points, documented bird and Dendrobium capra presence in natural habitat. Observations recorded 363 individual birds comprising 49 species, 36 genera, 21 families, and 11 orders. The dominant species was Passer montanus; Cisticolidae had the most species; Passeriformes was most abundant. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index of 3.52 indicates high diversity; Simpson dominance index of 0.038 indicates no dominant species (even individual distribution among species, showing ecological balance); Pielou evenness index of 0.905 indicates very even distribution across species. This ecologically reflects a stable habitat supporting diverse species evenly. These results indicate good habitat quality, important to preserve as conservation habitat for birds and Dendrobium capra. A diverse, stable bird population benefits Dendrobium capra by indicating a functioning habitat, maintaining ecosystem stability, and supporting ecological conditions required by this epiphytic orchid. Future research will compare bird populations across seasons to understand temporal dynamics of these ecological interactions.

Abstract

Endophytic fungi are known to produce secondary metabolites with potential applications in the field of health, including flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins, and eugenol. The use of eugenol from clove (Syzygium aromaticum) plants has been widely studied to optimize its benefits. This study aims to evaluate the production of eugenol by endophytic fungi isolated from clove organs collected from Tongole and Marikurubu. The isolated endophytic fungi were identified as follows: Rhizoctonia sp., Diplococcium sp., Geotrichum candidum, Eupenicillium javanicum, Penicillium frequentans, and Aspergillus nidulans. Eugenol content was analyzed using gas chromatography (GC). The results showed that eugenol production varied significantly among isolates, with Geotrichum candidum from Marikurubu (0.44111 μg/mL) and Aspergillus nidulans from Tongole (0.37972 μg/mL) exhibiting the highest concentrations. In contrast, other isolates showed relatively low production levels. These findings suggest that eugenol biosynthesis is strongly influenced by fungal species rather than organ origin or sampling location. This study highlights the potential of selected endophytic fungi as an alternative source of eugenol.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum, with its core principle of “Merdeka Belajar”, empowers teachers to design and implement innovative teaching methods, including differentiated instruction and social-emotional learning. Teachers’ instructional competencies play a significant role in the successful implementation of the curriculum. This study aims to analyze the pedagogical competencies of high school biology teachers in Aceh Province in implementing Differentiated Instruction (DI) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), to compare the competencies and perceptions between Transformational Teachers (TTs) and Non- Transformational Teachers (NTTs), and to examine the relationship between the two. The research sample consisted of 286 teachers, comprising NTTs (n = 223) and TTs (n = 63) from a total population of 1,603 high school biology teachers in Aceh Province. The research instrument utilized a questionnaire on the implementation of DI and SEL. The results indicate that most biology teachers in Aceh Province, both TTs and NTTs, possess pedagogical competencies in the Good to Very Good categories regarding the implementation of DI and SEL. A comparative analysis also revealed significant differences in competencies, with TTs demonstrating superior performance in applying DI and SEL than NTTs. The Spearman correlation test showed a very strong, significant positive relationship between the implementation of DIL and SEL (r = 0.837, p < 0.001). This indicates that the higher a teacher's competence in applying differentiation principles, the greater their ability to manage students’ social-emotional needs. It is hoped that this will provide recommendations for education policymakers in Aceh in designing more targeted training strategies to reduce competency gaps among teachers in the field. This study provides a mapping of Biology teachers’ competencies in Aceh regarding the implementation of DI and SEL, serving as an empirical foundation for evaluating the effectiveness of teacher professional development programs.

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles have recently become one of the nanomaterials that are widely developed as antibacterial agents because they have a broad spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This study aimed to synthesize silver nanoparticle using ecoenzyme solution as a reducing agent and to characterize its characters. This study was conducted in two main stages, i.e. biosynthesis which was carried out by reacting ecoenzyme solution with silver nitrate solution, and the next stage was the characterization of silver nanoparticle, including morphological analysis using spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and particle size analyzer (PSA) as well as analysis of antibacterial activity. The results showed that silver nanoparticles were successfully synthesized. Morphological analysis using SEM showed that silver nanoparticles were cubic, rectangular, or spherical, while the size analysis was around at 83.64 nm, although visually, there were no visible color change to dark brown and no peak at a wavelength of 400-600 nm. Antibacterial activity analysis showed that ecoenzyme-derived silver nanoparticles had the ability to inhibit both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and specifically had better antibacterial properties for gram-positive bacteria compared to the control. These results indicated that silver nanoparticle using ecoenzyme as bioreductor has the potential to be used as antibacterial agents for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.

Abstract

Data literacy is a critical competency in 21st-century STEM-based biology education, enabling students to analyze, interpret, and use data for evidence-based decision-making. However, research on this topic remains fragmented and lacks comprehensive synthesis. This study aimed to examine research trends, distribution patterns, and future directions of data literacy in STEM-based biology education. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the PRISMA 2020 framework was conducted using 52 empirical articles indexed in Scopus from 2015 to 2026. The data were analyzed through thematic and bibliometric approaches using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny (Bibliometrix-R). The results showed a substantial increase in publications between 2022 and 2025. Nevertheless, research distribution remains uneven, characterized by the dominance of developed countries, limited international collaboration, and dispersed contributions across authors, institutions, and journals. Bibliometric findings identified data literacy as the central research theme, closely associated with STEM education and increasingly connected to data science. Thematic evolution revealed a shift from foundational conceptual discussions toward technology-oriented and data-driven approaches. These findings highlight the growing importance of data literacy in biology education and emphasize the need for integrated theoretical frameworks, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the adoption of innovative technologies to support future educational practices and research.

Abstract

The Pananjung Pangandaran Nature Reserve is an Indonesian conservation area rich in species of the Myrtaceae family. This study aims to analyze the morpho-anatomical characteristics, chlorophyll content, and phytochemical compounds of the leaves of several Myrtaceae species in the area using an exploratory approach with a mixed-methods design. The observed parameters include environmental abiotic factors, leaf morphology, stomatal anatomy, chlorophyll content, and phytochemical compounds. The data were analyzed descriptively and supported by a literature review. Five Syzygium species were successfully identified, namely S. densiflorum, S. aqueum, S. lineatum, S. antisepticum, and S. polyanthum. Elliptical leaf shapes and parasitic stomatal types were dominant. The highest stomatal density was found in S. antisepticum (326,115 stomata/mm²), while the highest chlorophyll content was in S. densiflorum (53,9 CCI). Saponins were detected in all species. Abiotic factors indicate variations in environmental conditions that influence the morpho-anatomical, chlorophyll, and phytochemical characteristics of Myrtaceae species in the region .

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning model on students' cognitive learning outcomes in environmental change material. This study was conducted from May to August 2025 at SMA Negeri 4 Medan. The research design used was a quasi-experimental design. The design used was a pretest-posttest design with a control group, using simple random sampling techniques. The samples in this study were X1 as the experimental class and X3 as the control class. Based on the research results, the average pretest score for the experimental class was 59.429 and the average posttest score was 84.143. Meanwhile, in the control class, the average pretest score was 58.714 and the average posttest score was 74.714. Based on the results of the independent t-test, a significance level (2-tailed) of 0.000 was obtained. Thus, this significance value is smaller than the significance level of 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05), so the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is an effect of the problem-based learning model on student learning outcomes in the cognitive domain of environmental change material at SMA Negeri 4 Medan.
