Abstract

Background: Anaemia is a common health problem among adolescents and can affect academic performance. In 2023, the WHO reported that the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls was 48.9%, up from 37.1% in 2018. The SKI study in 2023 recorded a national prevalence of 16.2%, while in Central Java and the city of Semarang, the prevalence was around 30%. These high figures highlight the importance of providing effective nutrition education to improve adolescent girls' knowledge and attitudes towards anaemia, including through e-booklets. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of e-booklet nutrition education on knowledge and attitudes about anemia among adolescent girls. Method: This study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design. Twenty respondents were included in each group. The data collected were knowledge and attitude scores obtained through a questionnaire. Statistical analysis used the Independent T-Test and the Mann-Whitney test. Results: E-booklets are considered a suitable educational medium. The treatment group demonstrated greater increases in knowledge (22) and attitude (12.90) than the control group, which increased by 11 and 7.90, respectively. Using e-booklets for education had a significant effect on the knowledge (p = 0.000) and attitude (p = 0.002) of adolescent girls. Conclusion: The e-booklet on anemia nutrition education effectively increased knowledge by 90% and attitudes by 88%.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Indonesia and the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Low hemoglobin levels are a common negative prognostic factor in cancer patients, influenced by chemotherapy, nutritional status, and deficiencies in hemoglobin-forming nutrients. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between protein, iron, and vitamin C intake, nutritional status, and frequency of chemotherapy with hemoglobin levels in breast cancer patients, and to assess differences in the consumption of nutrient-rich food sources between patients with low and normal hemoglobin levels at Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Jakarta. Methods: A cross-sectional design was applied from 11 November to 6 December 2024 involving 90 purposively selected respondents. Data were collected through interviews using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Correlation analyses were performed using Pearson and Spearman tests, while differences were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. Results: Most respondents were in early elderly age (45–59 years). A significant and strong correlation was found between protein, iron, and vitamin C intake and hemoglobin levels (p=0.0001), while nutritional status (p=0.090) and frequency of chemotherapy (p=0.222) were not significantly associated with hemoglobin levels. Significant differences were found in the consumption of chicken (p=0.006), chicken liver (p=0.006), tempeh (p=0.046), spinach (p=0.010), guava (p=0.000), and papaya (p=0.032) between patients with low and normal hemoglobin levels. Conclusion: Indicating that protein, iron, and vitamin C intake were associated with hemoglobin levels, while nutritional status and chemotherapy frequency were not.

Abstract

Background: Hemoglobin (Hb) played an important role in cognitive function and academic achievement. However, the direct association between Hb levels and student learning outcomes, particularly in Islamic boarding school–based campuses, has not been widely studied. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between hemoglobin levels and Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) as well as Pesantren Achievement Index (IPKS) among female students in a pesantren-based university. Methods: This was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach involving 84 sixth-semester female students. Hb levels were measured using the EasyTouch GCHb device, while GPA and IPKS data were obtained from academic records. The Fisher Exact Test was used for statistical analysis. Results: Most respondents had normal hemoglobin levels (95.2%), good GPA (98.8%), and good IPKS (89.3%). No statistically significant relationship was found between Hb levels and GPA (p = 0.952) or IPKS (p = 0.055), although a practically relevant trend was observed in the IPKS results. Conclusion: There was no significant association between hemoglobin levels and student learning achievement as measured by GPA and IPKS. Academic and pesantren achievements were likely influenced by other factors beyond hemoglobin status, suggesting that intervention approaches should be multidimensional.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and low-grade inflammation that disrupts cytokine production, including interleukin-1β (IL-1β), which plays a key role in β-cell function and survival. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of Centella asiatica ethanol extract on IL-1β expression in streptozotocin–nicotinamide (STZ-NA)–induced type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rat models. Method: The study employed a randomized post-test-only controlled group design involving 48 male Wistar rats, which were randomly allocated into six experimental groups, including two control groups. Observations and outcome measurements were conducted on days 28 and 35. Treatments included Centella asiatica extract at doses of 300, 600, and 1200 mg/kgBW and metformin as a comparison. IL-1β expression was assessed using immunohistochemistry and scored using the Immunoreactive Score (IRS). Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. Results: Results showed that STZ-NA induction decreased IL-1β expression compared with normal controls. Administration of Centella asiatica extract significantly influenced IL-1β expression (p < 0.05). The 1200 mg/kgBW dose restored IL-1β expression to levels comparable with the normal control and metformin groups, especially at 35 days. Conclusion: In conclusion, Centella asiatica ethanol extract improves impaired cytokine production in T2DM rats, and the 1200 mg/kgBW dose for 35 days demonstrates the strongest effect in normalizing IL-1β expression.

Abstract

Background: Pregnant women with chronic energy deficiency (CED) have a 2.76-fold higher risk of developing anemia. Iron requirements can be met through supplementary feeding products formulated from iron-rich ingredients, such as sorghum flour and moringa leaf flour. Objective: To analyze the moisture content, ash content, macronutrient composition (protein, fat, and carbohydrates), micronutrient content (iron), and organoleptic properties of cookies formulated from sorghum flour and moringa leaf flour. Methods: This experimental study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three formulations based on different ratios of sorghum flour to moringa leaf flour, i.e F1 (85 g : 15 g), F2 (80 g : 20 g), and F3 (75 g : 25 g). Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and One-Way ANOVA, followed by Duncan’s multiple range test. Results: The nutritional contents of F1–F3 were as follows: moisture 10.56–12.61%, ash 2.92–3.19%, protein 17.10–18.25%, fat 11.67–12.57%, carbohydrates 41.25–55.72%, and iron 10.49–13.29%. The best formulation, F3, had a brown color, moderately pleasant taste, less aromatic smell, non-crispy mouthfeel, and a fairly strong aftertaste. Each 60 g serving of F3 contained 242.56 kcal energy, 10.93 g protein, 7.24 g fat, 33.43 g carbohydrates, and 7.97 mg iron. Conclusion: F3 cookies met the standards for supplementary feeding products for pregnant women. However, their energy and fat contents were still below the recommended values and the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for cookies. Each 60 g serving (4 pieces) contributed 10–15% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for pregnant women in the second trimester aged 19–29 years and could be classified as high in iron (39.09% NRV) and a source of protein (23.96% NRV).
