Abstract

This research discusses the use of the Muna language among students at English Department of Halu Oleo University. Language contact that occurs between the students who are from several regencies and tribes became an interesting thing to see how they keep and use their local language. This study focus on How is the use of Muna language among the students who are from Raha city and what is the prospect of Muna language in the community of students in the globalization era. The main data was taken in English department environment, faculty of teacher training and education, Halu Oleo University. Observation and interviews were used by the Researcher in collecting the data in this area. The result of this research shows that the students are no longer use Muna language correctly and properly. It appears that there is a language shift from Muna to Indonesian which began when they live in Raha and continues when they move to Kendari to college. It shows the prospect of Muna language among students is very threatened.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out how the teacher pedagogical competence in Teaching English at The Sixth Grade of SDTQ Muadz Bin Jabal Kendari. The researcher used descriptive analysis as the researcher design. The data source was collected from two teachers of class 6th. The researcher used the triangulation technique, namely interview, observation, and video recording in this study. The result shows that the teacher pedagogical competence still needs improvement such as their competence in using teaching method since they still used conventional method in this case is lecturing method. Related to teaching method, the teacher should be creative to carry out an activity to be organized. The teacher also did not provide feedback for the students. In term of the young learner, the teacher may use cooperative learning model to make their teaching more attractive. It was recommended to the teacher to use various teaching style or find another reference to create a better teaching model.

Abstract

This study is conducted to know whether there is a significant correlation among students’ Emotional Quotient (EQ), Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and vocabulary knowledge. This study was a correlational design which employed quantitative research methods. The sample of this study was 34 students which were from XI MIPA 1 in SMAN 2 Kendari. The sampling was taken by random sampling technique. The researcher used 3 instruments such as EQ questionnaire, RPM’s IQ test, and the New Vocabulary Level Test (NVLT) to collect the data. Then the data were analyzed by using Pearson product-moment through SPSS 16.0. The result shows that the coefficient correlation between students’ EQ and their vocabulary knowledge (r=0.482) that indicates a significant correlation and also the coefficient correlation between students’ IQ and their vocabulary knowledge (r=0.437) also indicates there is a significant correlation. The significant score of each students’ EQ and IQ has a significant correlation with vocabulary knowledge because its probability value (sig.2- tailed) is 0.004 and 0.010 which lower than 0.05 (sig (2-tailed) < ∝). It can be concluded that H1 is accepted and H0 is unaccepted. This indicates that there is a significant correlation between students’ EQ and their vocabulary knowledge and also there is a significant correlation between students’ IQ and their vocabulary knowledge.

Abstract

The research was conducted to analyze the use of Higher Order Thinking Skills in English textbook exercises for senior high school. The scope was focused on three skills; analyze, evaluate and create that exist on reading exercises of English textbook “Bahasa Inggris Kelas X SMA/MA/SMK/MAK”. The research used desk research while the instrument used guideline according to Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised. Technique of data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result showed that from 168 reading exercises, 9 exercises were classified into analyze (C4), 5 exercises were classified into evaluate (C5) and 2 exercises were classified into create (C4). This meant that from 168 reading exercises in English textbook, 16 exercises were classified into higher order thinking skills, with the frequency of question 56,25% Analyze (C4), 31,25% Evaluate (C5) and 12,5% Create (C6). Therefore, findings indicated that higher order thinking skills in English textbook reading exercises was still low.

Abstract

This research discussed Java language maintenance by Javanese people living at Bangunsari, Muna. It focused on condition in several domains as family, school, neighbourhoods, mosque, and mass media as well as the researcher reviewed in terms of age groups, and causal factors leading to the language maintenance. The data were interview and conversation with the Javanese people at Bangunsari. Design used was qualitative research through ethnography approach. The researcher used observation, recording, and interview as the instruments to get data. The result showed that Javanese people who lived at Bangunsari village more frequently used Java language in their daily life. In the domain of family, Javanese people were monolingual as personally, bilingual with code mixing and code switching as well as in the domain of neighbourhoods. As in the domain of school, they personally were qualified as monolingual speakers with code switching. Religion domain showed that the Javanese people personally were qualified as monolingual speakers with code mixing in bilingual situation as well as in groups of age in 10 up to 50 years old and above still used Java language even though they mixed or switched into bahasa. The causal factors that lead the language maintenance of Java language were number of speakers, loyalty and awareness of Java language, continuity of Java language usage, and the power of Java language and other factors reviewed from sociolinguistic perspectives such as population mobility, culture and tradition, education, and religion.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating whether there was a significant effect of using improvisation  technique on students’ speaking ability. The research question of this study was “Is there any significant effect of using improvisation technique on students’ speaking ability at the second grade of SMA Negeri 1 Kusambi?”. The sample of this study was students at XI IPA 3 consisting of 11 males and 15 females who were chosen using purposive sampling. The instrument of this study was a speaking test. To analyze the result of this study, the researcher used paired sample t-test computed in SPSS 16.0. It was conducted to compare the scores of pre-test and post-test in experimental class. After analyzing the data, it was found that there was a significant difference in the scores for pre-test (M= 1.47, SD= 0.38) and post- test (M= 2.85, SD= 0.45). The probability value was .000 (<.05) It means that there was a significance difference on students’ speaking ability before and after the use of improvisation technique. Keywords: Speaking Ability, Teaching Speaking, Improvisation Technique.

Abstract

Speech function that used in delivering instructional process is important because a major part of class time in learning process is taken up by teachers. Teachers should use speech function appropriate with the classroom context. This study applied speech function theory to analyse functional speech of teacher‟s utterances. This study investigated the speech function used by English teachers in language instruction. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of speech function and the accuracy of speech functions used by English teachers at SMAN 5 Kendari. This study employed a qualitative research design. The techniques of data collection were documentation and observation. To analyse the data, the researcher used descriptive  analysis.  The  result  of this study showed that there are  five  types of speech function and they are accurately used by English teachers in giving instruction.Keywords: Speech Function, Accuracy, Context

Abstract

This research is aimed at investigating whether or  not there was a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook  Group  on  students’  writing  competence  at MAN 1 Konawe Selatan in writing recount text. The design  of  this  research  was  pre-experimental  design which involved only one class (class X MIA 1) as sample of this research. The total sample was 24 students which selected by using purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a written test which focused on three aspects of writing namely organization, language use and mechanics. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test and post-test in order to know students’ writing competence before and after treatment of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group had been applying. The researcher used the paired sample t-test in SPSS 16 Windows Software to analyze the result of this research. The  finding  shows  that  there  is  a  significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on students’ writing competence. It is proven by the result of descriptive analysis where the mean score of pre-test was 51.66 and mean score of post-test was 67.29. Furthermore, the result of hypothesis testing showed that the value of Sig (2-tailed) was 0.000 which smaller than alpha value 0.05, means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on upgrading students’ writing competence in recount text at MAN 1 Konawe Selatan. Hence, teaching and learning writing use Peer Feedback through Facebook Group can be one of effective methods on upgrading students’ writing competence. Keywords: Peer Feedback, Facebook Group, Writing, Recount Text

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the effect of using mobile access (Audio Visual Easy Learn English) on students’ vocabulary achievement at SMPN 11 Kendari. Mobile  Access  (Audio  visual  easy  learn  English)  as  a media in learning teaching process. This research used quasi experimental design, the population is all seventh- grade students, and the sample is class VII1 as the experimental group and VII2as control group. The experimental group consisted of 30 students and control group consisted of 21 students. The research instrument consisted of 44 questions of vocabulary test. To collect the data, the researcher gave pre-test, taught by using Mobile Access  (Audio  Visual  Easy  Learn  English),  and  giving post-test. Mean score of post-tests (79.63) in experimental class is higher than pre-test score (59.66). While, in control class also has improvement but not too significant. It can be seen on post-test score (64.80) is higher than pre-test score (55.19). Based on the calculation of T-test, it shows that tcount = 3.775, while t-table =2.010 at level of = 0.05 with DF = 49. It means that tcount is higher than table, Therefore H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. This can be concluded that  there  was a  significant  effect  of  using a significant effect using Mobile Access (Audio Visual Easy Learn English) on students’ vocabulary achievement at the seventh-grade students of SMPN 11 Kendari. Keywords: MA, Mobile Access, Audio Visual Easy Learn English, vocabulary achievement

Abstract

This thesis is about the analysis of speech act in Barbie as Rapunzel movie. The research questions of this thesis were (1) what are the direct and indirect speech acts used by the main character in Barbie as Rapunzel movie? And (2) What are the perlocutionary acts of the main character’s utterances in Barbie as Rapunzel movie?. The objectives of this research were (1) To decribe the direct and indirect speech acts used by the main character in Barbie as Rapunzel  movie  and  (2)  To  describe  the perlocutionary acts   of   the   main   character’s   utterances   in   Barbie  as Rapunzel movie. This research used a qualitative method to describe and analyze  the  utterance.  The  technique  of  data  collection were (1) The researcher download Barbie as Rapunzel movie on youtube. (2) The researcher watched the movie of Barbie as Rapunzel  repetedly. (3) Reading and checking dialogue which related with research from the movie script “Barbie as Rapunzel” movie. (4) The researcher classified the dirrect, indirect speech, and perlocutionary acts. The technique   of   data   analysis   were  (1)   The   researcher identified the direct, indirect speech act and perlocutionary acts from Barbie as Rapunzel movie. (2) Described and analized the utterances which include direct, indirect, and perlocutionary acts. (3) Concluding the data analysis. The result of this thesis show that direct speech acts is the dominant types of speech acts. Where, there are 58 direct speech acts, 2 indirect speech acts, and 41 perlocutionary acts. Keywords: Speech Act, Movie
