Abstract

The low level of students’ active participation in Civic Education (PPKn) learning, which is still dominated by lecture-based methods, is the main problem addressed in this study. Previous studies generally examined discussion or presentation methods separately and focused more on cognitive learning outcomes, thus failing to comprehensively optimize students’ active participation. Therefore, the novelty of this study lies in the integration of case-based discussion methods and structured presentations within a single learning cycle in the context of Madrasah Aliyah, making the learning process more contextual and participatory. This study aims to improve students’ active participation through the implementation of discussion and presentation methods in accordance with the characteristics of Classroom Action Research (CAR), which focuses on improving the learning process rather than testing effectiveness. The study employed the Kemmis and McTaggart model conducted in three cycles, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of this study were 23 tenth-grade science students at MAS Nurul Yaqin Dawi-Dawi. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that students’ active participation increased significantly in each cycle. In Cycle I, participation was still low and learning was teacher-centered. In Cycle II, case-based discussions using student worksheets began to increase student engagement. In Cycle III, the integration of discussion and presentation methods was implemented effectively, with 85% of students categorized as highly active and 15% as moderately active, with no passive students. In addition, improvements were observed in students’ argumentation skills, confidence in expressing opinions, and the quality of academic interaction. These findings indicate that discussion methods contribute to the development of critical thinking, while presentation methods enhance communication skills and speaking confidence. The integration of both methods creates a more participatory, collaborative, and meaningful learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the classroom as an intercultural arena through an ethnographic investigation of intercultural education practices at SMA Negeri 3 Kupang Timur. The ethnic, linguistic, and socio-cultural diversity of students in East Nusa Tenggara creates complex interactional dynamics within classroom learning processes. Such diversity positions the classroom not merely as an instructional space, but as a social arena in which identity negotiation, meaning-making, and intercultural dialogue continuously unfold. This research employed a qualitative approach using an educational ethnography design to gain an in-depth understanding of participants’ lived experiences, meanings, and everyday practices. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with 25 informants (the principal, teachers, and students), and document analysis. Informants were selected purposively based on their active involvement in multicultural learning practices within the school context. The findings reveal four major themes: (1) identity negotiation through language use and communicative practices; (2) the formation of solidarity alongside culturally based social boundaries; (3) the implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy by teachers; and (4) the management of tensions and stereotypes in student interactions. These findings demonstrate that the classroom is not a neutral space, but rather a dynamic site of cultural production, reproduction, and transformation where intercultural meanings are continuously constructed. Theoretically, this study contributes to the fields of educational anthropology and intercultural theory by offering an empirical understanding of intercultural educational practices in a secondary school context. Practically, the findings highlight the importance of strengthening teachers’ reflective competence and developing school policies that promote inclusive and culturally responsive education. Future research is recommended to adopt longitudinal or comparative designs in order to broaden the understanding of intercultural dynamics across different educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how tolerance is constructed through everyday practices at SMPK Shining Star sTimika, a school characterized by multiethnic and multireligious student backgrounds. The issue of tolerance is particularly significant within Indonesia’s plural society, especially in Papua, where complex social and cultural dynamics shape educational interactions. This research employed a qualitative approach using an educational ethnography design to explore meanings, social interactions, and cultural practices that shape tolerant attitudes within the school environment. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with the principal, teachers, and students, as well as document analysis of school policies and programs. Informants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques based on their active involvement in school activities and cross-cultural interactions. The findings reveal four main themes: (1) cross-identity dialogue in classroom interactions, (2) cross-ethnic collaboration in learning activities, (3) the role of teachers as cultural mediators, and (4) school culture as a symbolic space of tolerance. Tolerance is not merely understood as a normative value but as a social practice constructed through dialogical communication, heterogeneous collaboration, and critical reflection in everyday school life. The study contributes theoretically by reinforcing social constructivist perspectives in intercultural education and offers practical recommendations for schools to design learning strategies and policies that promote inclusive cultures. Future research is encouraged to conduct comparative studies across different schools or regions to broaden contextual understanding.

Abstract

The Dutch East Indies government implemented policies to regulate the production of alcoholic beverages in Indonesia by enforcing regulations and cracking down on locally produced alcohol. The production and distribution of alcoholic beverages were governed by customs regulations, monopolies, and a licensing system aimed at increasing state revenue while also controlling societal morals and social norms. These policies impacted traditional ciu bekonang producers, who generally lacked official permits, resulting in their activities being classified as illegal distillation. Consequently, many producers resorted to clandestine distillation to evade colonial authorities’ oversight. The colonial government subsequently responded to this situation by implementing administrative regulations, surveillance, and repressive measures against producers engaged in illegal distillation. The objective of this study is to examine how the Dutch East Indies colonial government implemented regulations and repressive measures regarding alcoholic beverages, particularly the traditional ciu bekonang. The research employs a historical methodology. The results of the study indicate that the production process for ciu bekonang required low production costs and offered relatively high profit potential. Recognizing this profit opportunity, the Dutch East Indies colonial government subsequently implemented policies regarding alcoholic beverages to regulate production and boost the economy. These regulations impacted ciu bekonang distilleries, which the colonial government considered illegal because they lacked distillation permits. The Dutch East Indies colonial government enforced these regulations to crack down on the production of illegal ciu bekonang distilleries by conducting raids, seizures, and arrests of producers by the Surakarta city police.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the dynamics of the New Order’s educational ideology in Indonesia and its transformation in the context of contemporary educational liberalization. Using a descriptive qualitative method based on a literature review, this study demonstrates that the New Order regime utilized education as an instrument of political and ideological control through policy centralization, curriculum standardization, and the implementation of militaristic values. Consequently, various forms of resistance emerged from intellectual students, religious institutions, the arts community, and civil society. In the post-New Order era, education underwent a shift toward liberalization marked by privatization, commercialization, and the penetration of neoliberal ideology, which emphasizes efficiency, competition, and market orientation. This study argues that this new ideology subsequently transformed through the emergence of campus managerialism, curriculum marketization, and the reduction of the state’s role, which led to increased inequality and the erosion of humanistic values in education. Nevertheless, resistance from various groups indicates efforts to preserve education as a public right and a democratic space. The findings of this study underscore the need for critical negotiation among the state, the market, and society to realize an inclusive, equitable, and socially just education.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the controversy surrounding the narrative of the September 30th Movement (G30S), which during the New Order era was presented in a one-sided manner and tended to vilify the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) through various media, including history textbooks, thereby raising suspicions of ideological bias and political interests in their compilation, even though the publisher was a private company. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze how the G30S is represented in the textbook “Sejarah Nasional Indonesia dan Umum: Untuk SMU Kelas 3,” published by Erlangga and authored by Badrika in 1997, by examining aspects of vocabulary, grammar, the representation of actors and events, as well as the ideology embedded within it. This aims to uncover the discourse constructions and interests behind the G30S narrative. The method used is qualitative research employing Roger Fowler’s Critical Discourse Analysis model, which focuses on language analysis as a social practice. The results indicate that the use of specific vocabulary and sentence structures creates a negative image of the PKI and a positive image of the military, while simultaneously limiting the reader’s perspective. Furthermore, the G30S events are represented in a linear manner, with the PKI as the primary actor and the military as the savior, without presenting the historical complexities. This discourse also contains New Order ideology that emphasizes the legitimacy of power and the instillation of Pancasila values. In conclusion, the textbook is not neutral but rather a product of discourse.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the close relationship between language and culture as two elements that influence each other in social life, particularly in the Sasak community in Lombok. The Sasak language serves as a means of communication and a medium for conveying values, norms, and cultural identity from generation to generation. This research uses a literature study research method with the following steps: a. Collecting sources from journals; b. Books; c. Related documents; d. Analyzing articles in Indonesian and English; e. Reviewing cultural manuscripts, which were then summarized and analyzed using a linguistic approach. Theoretically, this research draws on the social linguistics perspective of Dell Hymes, which emphasizes the role of language in shaping and maintaining culture through social interaction. In addition to viewing language as a reflection of social reality and a cultural symbol with philosophical meaning, such as in the vocabulary of "pare," "matur Suksma," "nine, mame," "tuak," "saik," and oral traditions such as "Dewi Anjani." The findings of this study reveal that the Sasak language plays a fundamental role in maintaining the sustainability of its culture, as an expression of cultural identity and a medium for preserving traditions. Besides serving as a means of establishing social structures and hierarchies through the use of language and vocabulary, particularly in traditional rituals such as weddings and funerals, each vocabulary reflects life values, beliefs, and human relationships with nature and spirituality. Therefore, the loss of language has the potential to diminish the community's cultural identity and heritage.

Abstract

Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience challenges in managing menstrual hygiene due to limitations in adaptive functioning and self-care skills. Limited preparation prior to menarche may increase dependence on caregivers and reduce independence in daily activities. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a structured instructional approach in improving menstrual hygiene skills among adolescents with ASD within an educational context. This study employed a single-subject (A-B) design with mastery criteria and maintenance assessment. The participants were two female adolescents aged 9-10 years. The intervention targeted essential skills, including menstrual pad application, cleaning and disposal of used pads, and independent daily practice. Instruction was delivered through systematic, step-by-step procedures supported by prompting, repetition, and reinforcement to facilitate skill acquisition and retention. The results indicated that both participants achieved increased independence within 17-22 days. The acquired skills were successfully generalized and applied during naturally occurring menstruation. Parental involvement contributed to consistent practice and supported the transfer of skills across settings. These findings suggest that structured instructional strategies are effective in enhancing menstrual hygiene skills and promoting functional independence among adolescents with ASD. Integrating practical life-skill training into educational programs is essential to support puberty preparation and long-term independence.
