Abstract

Teacher certification was a consequence of Indonesian teacher professional acknowledgement. In the first step, the certification was conducted for the existing teachers. It was started in 2006 and planned to be completed in 2015. Starting from 2016 pre-service teacher certificate, which should be obtained from the pre-service teacher professional education program, is a requirement for new teacher recruitment. The guideline of the program was regulated under the provision of Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture No. 87 2013. Based on this regulation, the participant prior education background could be: (a) educational bachelor degree in accordance with professional education program taken; (b) educational bachelor degree allied with professional education program taken; (c) non-educational bachelor/D-IV in accordance with professional education program taken; (d) non-educational bachelor/D-IV allied with professional education program taken; and (e) bachelor degree in psychology for pre and elementary school. From the point of view of the vocational education philosophy, the regulation was not completely appropriate. Vocational education will be effective when the instructor has had successful experience in the application of skills and knowledge to the operations and processes he undertakes to teach. From the deep review of philosophical aspect, characteristic of all prior learning of pre-service teacher professional education types, and vocational teacher theory found that hands-on skill and experience is a high priority requirement for vocational teacher. This type of competence was not owned by all participants who came from any type of prior education. Based on the program structure, it could be concluded that matriculation is the only part of the program where hands-on skill and experience could be delivered.

This article discusses how the induction program correlates with the performance of an early childhood beginner teacher. The population in this research is early childhood education beginner teacher. That is, they that have the working experience less than or equal to three years (  month). While the sample in this study is taken with the non probability sampling techniques. The instrument used to collect the data is the questionnaire. The hypothesis in this study is there is a correlation between the induction program for beginner teacher and the performance of early childhood education beginner teacher. In this case the intended variables are the induction program for beginner teachers (x) and beginner teacher performance (y). The measurements are performed using Pearson product moment correlations because data from both a variable analyzed in the form of data interval. The result shows that there is no correlation between the induction program for beginner teacher and the performance of early childhood education beginner teacher (under the 0.05 criteria).

Abstract

The study was aimed at (1) examining school factors (school sector, teaching and instruction, schoolresources and technology, school climate, school teachers and leadership activities) influenced readingliteracy, and (2) investigating how the factor interacts with reading aspects (reading experience, process and comprehension, and reading attitudes and behaviours). The study used Progress in International Reading Literacy (PIRLS) 2006 and 2011 data that was categorized as secondary data. The study was quantitative research and employed Rasch and hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) analyses. The subjects of data 2006 were 4774 and 2011 were 4779 Primary-School students nested within 158 schools sampled using a random sampling technique. Findings of the study revealed that only some school factors were influential. There were identifiable significant correlations between reading literacy and school factors such as school sector and teaching instruction in 2006, and between school sector, teaching instruction and leadership activities in2011.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to: (1) gain information on the existing condition of learning media which are used by lecturers to teach grammar, (2) develop the proper media which is suitable for the students’ need and appropriate to teach grammar, and (3) find out the feasibility of the proposed media. Research and Development method was used in this research. The research consisted of exploration stage and development stage. Observation, questionnaire, and interview were used to gain the data, while Spiral Data Analysis was used to analyze the data. From the exploration stage, it was found out that the media usually used by the lecturer to teach grammar were Power Point Presentation and handouts. The weaknesses of these media were lecturer dependent, bad presentation, time consuming, non-independent learning, device malfunction, and limited exercises. It was also revealed that Computer Assisted Instruction was not used to teach grammar while it was needed. Moodle based English Grammar Gate was designed as an answer to the students’ need. It consisted of two major parts; they are: tutorial part and exercise part. Expert judgment was done to validate the product. The experts suggested several improvements and revision was made regarding the evaluation given. The revised product was then used in field testing to find out the feasibility of the product. Facing two field testing processes and having several revision toward the product, it was then stated feasible.

Abstract

More than five ethnics are living in harmony in five inhabited islands of Karimunjawa, the west southern archipelago of Java Island. Karimunjawa has uniqueness of its society and natural resources. One of the crucial problems of education in Karimunjawa is the lack of reading resources or textbooks, which are contextually promoting the localities. Commonly used textbooks describe facts, culture, or society of common Indonesia, but locality, ethnicity-based indigenous knowledge, nature, environment, fishermen life, indigenous technology, and ethnic’s harmonious life had not been mentioned yet in those textbooks. This research explored and identified what should students of multicultural society learn about their diversity nature and society. The textbooks are suitable for ES grade 4, 5, and 6. The draft of the textbooks had been validated as quite good by three experts, and need to be revised on content and to be more inquiry based, and suitable for ES students.

Abstract

Co-Op Co-Op is one of the cooperative learning strategies. It alllows students to work together in smallgroup to advance their understanding and provides them with the opportunity to share the understandingwith their peers. The research aims describing at (1) whether Co-Op Co-Op Method can improve students’reading comprehension in determining detail information and (2) the difficulties of using Co-Op Co-Opmethod to enhance the students’ reading comprehension especially in determining explicit and implicitinformation. This research applied a Classroom Action Researchand it was conducted in two cycles. Theresult of the research showed that (1) Co-Op Co-Op method can improve the students’ readingcomprehnsion in determining the detail information; explicit and implicit information. The means of thestudents’ score improved from cycle to cycle. (2) There are some difficulties of using Co-Op Co-Opmethod in teaching reading comprehension to determine detail information; explicit and implicitinformation such as (a) implementing Co-Op Co-Op method takes long time because the students shoulddiscuss, present, provide the materials as well as doing the exercises (b) it is very difficult to control allgroups and hold them in group discussion because some of them still were passive (c) higher levelstudents usually take turn more than the lower one especially in the the discussing the materials andpresenting the materials.

Abstract

This study examined how students’ scientific argumentation changed over as they participated in hierarchy of inquiry learning. The hierarchy of inquiry  is a comprehensive approach in which students  working for an extended period of time that integrated several ways of inquiry systematically to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge. This  action research was  conducted in Biology Teacher Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Sebelas Maret University.  The students, who were at the 4rd semester and who studied the class of Plant Embryology, were purposely selected.   The data were collected from interviews with the researchers, classroom observations, and collection of student portfolios. The scientific argumentation   was measured using modified Toulmin’s Argument Pattern (TAP) with four kinds of argument elements:  claim,  evidence, reasoning, and rebuttal which presented in oral and written.  The results showed that students who experienced with the hierarchy of inquiry performed better scientific argumentation   which reflecting their higher-order thinking abilities.      We conclude that hierarchy of inquiry   is possible in fostering student’s scientific argumentation,    doing some inquiry activities, and thus make a positive impact on   scientific argumentation ability .  The findings can be helpful in the process of designing the new curricula for teacher candidates in order to foster scientific inquiry.
