Abstract

Problems in chemistry learning related to the three levels, namely the macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic (representational) (Barke, 2009: 27). During chemistry learning, student’s abilities to understand the roles of each representation level and transfer to another level is an important aspect for produce an explanation that can be understood. The curriculum of 2013 mandates that the essence of a scientific approach to learns through the Science Process Skills. Two-tier used as an instrument for measuring knowledge aspect because its abilities to analyze the cognitive skills of the students. Through two-tier, students just not pick the answer on items but also provide a reason for the answers are chosen so the cognitive processes can be observed and measured. As an instrument to measure the Science Process Skills, the fulfillment validity of the content becomes important. This two-tier instrument has good content validity between 0.78 to 1.0. Therefore, the scoring system that used in the examination students’ answer sheets is important part of this instrument to analyze science process skills student.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to improve the quality of higher education institution, namely: the Study Program of Accounting Education through well-traced graduates from the view of the alumni of the Study Program of Accounting Education – the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Sebelas Maret University and their users. The population of this research was all of the alumni. Its samples consisted of 860 alumni of the class of 2000s. The data of research were collected through observation, documentation, and focus group discussion with the users of alumni and APRODIKSI (Association of the Study Programs of Accounting Education). They were then analyzed by using the descriptive statistics. The results of research are as follows: 1) 88% of the alumni are satisfied with the education and learning process management at the Study Program of Accounting Education, Sebelas Maret University. 2) Based on the view of its alumni, the waiting time to get the first job is short; 60% of the graduates get their first job within three months following their graduation; 25% of them get their first job from three months to six months following their graduation, and the rest get their job after six months following their graduation. 3) Only 30% of the graduates have a job which is relevant to their field of study – they become Accounting teachers, or instructors in some related courses and staffs at the Ministry of Education and Culture. Furthermore, 70% of the graduates have varied positions namely: Directors in manufacturing companies, Financial Managers, Marketing Managers, staffs of financial institutions such as banks or leasing companies. Moreover, only 5% of them become entrepreneurs. 4) The first salary that they earn is decent enough, but only 10% of the graduates get the first salary in the amount of more than IDR 3,000,000 and 90% get the first salary in the amount between IDR 1,000,000 – 3,000,000. In addition, from the view of the users of alumni, they feel fairly satisfied with the alumni’s performance, and they expect that the institution will enhance the ‘flexible attitudes’ of their graduates in facing certain situations which require wise solutions to solve the existing problems.

Abstract

Educational research and practice strongly supports the notion of general cognitive skills instruction. High quality instruction enables students of all ages to construct domain specific and domain-general strategies, metacognitive knowledge about themselves and their cognitive skills, and how to better regulate their cognition. The starting point in this endeavor is for teachers (or expert students) to ask themselves what skills and strategies are important within the specific domain they teach, how they constructed these skills within their own repertoire of cognitive skills, and what they can tell their students about using these skills intelligently. The purpose of this article is to offer a strategy that is able to integrate the value of generic skills through integrated teaching materials based metacognitive strategy, which is able to accommodate the needs of students in recognizing its accuracy in learning so that the learning process can be carried out effectively and efficiently. This article was written based on a review of the relevant literature. The article concludes that the value of generic skills can be developed through the use of teaching materials that allow learners to develop generic skills that are needed in the course of his life

Abstract

This paper outlines the current global context for higher education in 2015, as a basis for examining the key trends in teacher education in the first decades of the 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to outline the current global contexts for higher education, and to provide an overview of the policies found in teacher education in those countries that consistently produce students who perform highly on international standardized tests such as PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS. The policies guiding teacher education in ‘high-performing’ countries tends to be aligned and inter-connected. These policies include public investment in education; creating identifiable career paths in teaching; attracting high-quality applicants; employing effective quality assurance policies and procedures; working in partnership with schools to train teachers; and using research and enquiry as a way to develop an informed, reflective, teaching profession. The paper then identifies broad principles that can be used to inform the development of future teacher education policies. This paper outlines the current global context for higher education in 2015, as a basis for examining the key trends in teacher education in the first decades of the 21st century. Abstract

More than five ethnics are living in harmony in five inhabited islands of Karimunjawa, the west southernarchipelago of Java Island. Karimunjawa has uniqueness of its society and natural resources. One of thecrucial problems of education in Karimunjawa is the lack of reading resources or textbooks, which arecontextually promoting the localities. Commonly used textbooks describe facts, culture, or society ofcommon Indonesia, but locality, ethnicity-based indigenous knowledge, nature, environment, fishermen life, indigenous technology, and ethnic’s harmonious life had not been mentioned yet in those textbooks. This research explored and identified what should students of multicultural society learn about their diversity nature and society. The textbooks are suitable for ES grade 4, 5, and 6. The draft of the textbooks had been validated as quite good by three experts, and need to be revised on content and to be more inquiry based, andsuitable for ES students.

Abstract

From educational perspectives, the ability of teachers to design a computer-based test material is believed to become a critical element to develop a breakthrough particularly in educational assessment practices in this twenty first century era. In addition, the ability of the teachers to create the digital testing is also expected to revitalize the implementation of testing for educational purposes. Though technology mediated testing provides teachers with such huge opportunities, its application remains static since the shift from traditional mode of testing to computerized testing is absolutely challenging. To back up those compelling arguments, this paper attempts to discuss four tangible opportunities for teachers to self-create computer-based testing for classroom use such as 1) teacher-student engagement in virtual learning environment; 2) testing efficiency and practicality; 3) interactive exercise for measurement; and 4) maintenance of high level of scoring accuracy. The paper will also talk about the challenges the teachers might face while creating and implementing the e-testing, namely 1) affordance of technological tools; 2) teacher-student familiarity in computer mediated learning and testing; and 3) innovation in adamant teaching and learning situation. At the end of this chapter, brief guidelines on how to administer and implement CBT for classroom use are proposed. The significance of this chapter is finally addressed to the needs of capacity building of e-testing construction and implementation for educational purposes. Consequently, there is an expectation of growing awareness of the teachers and practitioners towards the current paradigm in teachers-made test using computer in the context of classroom settings and beyond.
