Abstract

The poem Aḥinnu ilá Khubzi Ummī by Mahmoud Darwish displays a personal longing for mother and home which at the same time implies national consciousness and Palestinian resistance. This personal experience is constructed through everyday symbols such as bread, coffee and prayer which form symbolic nationalism. This research aims to reveal how the symbolic structure of poetry moves meaning from the personal realm to collective symbols of struggle and national identity, with a focus on the transformation of meaning through poetic language. The research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach to literature with content analysis. Primary data is the text of the poem Aḥinnu ilá Khubzi Ummī, while secondary data comes from journals, books and previous studies related to Darwish poetry, stylistics and semiotics. The analysis integrates stylistics to examine diction, imagery, metaphors and symbols, as well as Riffaterre's semiotics through heuristic and hermeneutic stages to reveal the indirect meaning that forms symbolic nationalism. Aḥinnu ilá Khubzi Ummī's poetry forms symbolic nationalism through the transformation of meaning from personal experience to collective experience. Riffaterre's stylistic and semiotic analysis shows that diction, imagery, metaphors and domestic symbols such as bread, coffee, mother's touch and religious expressions move from literal to symbolic meanings that emphasize the cultural identity, collective memory and spirit of resistance of the Palestinian people. This poem emphasizes the function of poetic language as a medium for expression of national identity and symbolic struggle, while also emphasizing the relevance of the integration of stylistics and semiotics in revealing indirect meaning in modern Arabic literary works

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the representation of street children and social conditions are constructed as mythical signs in Nadine Labaki's film Capernaum. Employing a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic method, this research examines signs at three levels: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that the representation of street children, embodied by the character Zain, is shaped through visuals of poverty, neglect, and violence, which at the connotative level signify street children as victims of social structures. This process naturalizes the myth that street children are symbols of the failure of the state and society to protect children's rights. In addition, social conditions such as poverty, injustice, and child neglect are constructed as mythical signs through visual repetition, realistic narratives, and representations of absent state institutions. The film Capernaum ultimately constructs a myth about structural injustice that is considered a “natural” condition in marginalized communities. This study emphasizes that film is not only a medium of entertainment, but also an arena for the production of meaning that is capable of constructing social reality through the mechanism of signs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the drill method in Arabic language learning for seventh-grade students at MTs Zia Salsabila Medan. The background of this research is based on the low level of active student participation in Arabic lessons and their weak vocabulary mastery, caused by a learning method that is less varied and tends to be monotonous. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of the study are the Arabic language teachers and seventh-grade students. The results show that the application of the drill method effectively increases student engagement and their retention of Arabic material. Students appeared more enthusiastic, gave positive responses, and showed significant improvement in pronunciation and understanding of sentence structure. Therefore, the drill method can be considered an effective alternative teaching strategy to improve Arabic learning outcomes, especially in the memorization of vocabulary at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This study investigates the semantic prosody of the noun qalb in the Qur'an using a corpus-based linguistic approach. The research aims to identify its collocational patterns, evaluate its positive, negative, and neutral prosodic tendencies, and analyze how contextual features influence its semantic nuances. Using data extracted from the Quranic Arabic Corpus, all 132 occurrences of qalb in their various morphological forms were examined. The analysis applies Partington's attitudinal-functional model and Hunston's context-based interpretation to classify collocates and determine evaluative meanings. The findings reveal that qalb is most frequently associated with negative prosody, such as hardness, deviation, disease, and heedlessness, while positive prosody appears in contexts of faith, tranquility, and purity, with a small portion showing neutral usage. Overall, the study concludes that the meaning of qalb in the Qur'an is dynamic and shaped by its collocations and contextual distribution.
