Abstract

The observational study was directed to find out the number of populations, large of habitat, home range, and density of long tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) in Badung Peninsula. Population site was recorded using GPS program. Data were analyzed using ArcView 3.2 and GmapCatcher programs. There were four population sites of long tailed macaques, namely Pura Dalem Karang Boma, Pura Gunung Payung, Pura Batu Pageh, and Pura Luhur Uluwatu. The average of population density was 114 individuals per hectare and the average of home range was 852,5 hectare. The study indicates that the population densities of long tailed macaques in Badung Peninsula are very high and their home ranges are very large. It is suggested that the population growth of the long tailed macaque in Badung Peninsula must be controlled for decreasing the negative impact.

Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate coconut water based extenders as an alternative extender for chilled Kintamani dog semen. Semen were collected from five dogs using manual stimulation and evaluated microscopically. Sperm were stored at 50C and divided into two aliquots which were extended with either coconut water based extender and sodium citrate extender in the ratio 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4. Sperm motility, viability and DNA integrity immediately and periodically (0,3 and 6 hour) were evaluated. Result showed that the effect of diluent on sperm motility and integrity of the Kintamani dog exerted a highly significant (p<0.01), whereas it had no effect on the percentage of dead sperm (p> 0.05). These results indicate that coconut water extender give good results in maintaining the motility, viability and DNA integrityof Kintamani dog sperm. It is concluded that coconut water suitable for extender of Kintamani dog.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the sensitivity pattern of E. coli isolated from pigs with colibacillosis to antibiotics. The total of 21 fecal samples was collected from pigs with white scour at the District of Kerambitan and Tabanan, the Regency of Tabanan, Bali. The isolation and identification of pathogenic E coli used Sheep Blood Agar medium, and serotype grouping of those bacteria was designated through agglutination test using serum’s antibody Polyvalent 1-5 and 6-11. The pathogenic E. coli found was then examined it`s own resistance to streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin, cefotaxime, and chloramphenicol according to Kirby Bouer method. The result showed that the isolates of E. coli polyvalent 1-5 were resistant to streptomycin and chloramphenicol, whereas that of polyvalent 6-11 was resistant to sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin, streptomycin and chloramphenicol.

Abstract

Long tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) has distributed throughout the regions in Indonesia, however, they, now, live separately to many local populations within an island. This research aimed to explore thegenetic diversity within and between populations of long tailed macaque in the Region of East Java. Thegenetic diversity was examined by molecular marker of d-loop region mtDNA using a pair of specificprimers. A total of 29 blood samples (15 samples from Alas Purwo population and 14 samples fromBaluran population) was extracted to find out a total DNA. The d-loop region mtDNA was amplifiedthrough PCR tecnique. The PCR products were sequenced using dideoxynucleotide chain terminationmethod at Macogen Inc. Korea. The research found 6 haplotypes, in which 3 haplotypes were found in eachpopulation. Haplotype and nucleotide diversities varied from 0.257 to 0.275 and 0.0012 to 0.0025repectively. Genetic differentiation between populatioon was F=44.1%. Phylogenetic reconstructionshowed that all haplotypes constructed  two different groups (haplogroups)  and there was no sharedhaplotype betwen populations. It can be concluded that both populations (Alas Purwo and Baluran) areuique and have low genetic diversities.

Abstract

Genetic polymorphisms are variations in the genetic structure of populations that represents the base level of biodiversities.  This research aimed to assess the polymorphism of microsatellite locus of D10S1432 in the population of long-tailed macaques in Sangeh, Bali.  A total of 18 blood samples collected as a source of DNA. DNA was extracted using QIAmp® DNA Blood Mini Kit. Microsatellite locus was amplified by polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR) with a total of 30 cycles, and a 57oC of annealing temperature. Furthermore, the alleles were separated by 7% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and emerged with silver staining. The results showed that there were three types of alleles found at D10S1432 locus in the long-tailed macaques population in Sangeh. The alleles size varied from 170 bp to 186 bp. The allele frequencies were  0.28, 0.67, and 0.05 for allele 170, allele 174, and allele 186 consecutively. The heterozygosity of the locus was 0.48. It can be concluded that microsatellites locus D10S1432 is polymorphic in the long-tailed macaques population in Sangeh.

Abstract

Pig ascariasis is an intestinal parasitic disease caused by Ascaris suum. The economic losses in pig ascariasis are caused by a bad feed conversion ratio (FCR) and rejection of some organs after animal slaughtering. An anthelmintic utilization and farm management improvement are the common prevention action, however, recently the utilization of herbs as an athelmintic has been developed, one of them is Moringa oleifera leaves. Moringa oleifera leaves are also a potential for a sources of animal food because of their high nutrients. This intervention research aimed to examine the anthelmintic effect of Moringa oleifera leaves and its potency as feed supplement. Experimental design used was ccompletely randomized design split time (CRD Split Time) with six treatments namely Moringa oleifera 5% and an infection of infective larvae of A. suum (1), Moringa oleifera 5% (2), positive control (3), Moringa oleifera 10% (4), Moringa oleifera 10% and infection of infective larvae of A. suum (5), and no treatment as negative control (6). Each treatment was imposed on four female landrace piglets aged 8 weeks and weighed around 11 kg. The results showed that Moringa oleifera 5% and 10% of the feed could inhibit the egg production of A.suum and had a significant effect (P

Abstract

Bali province has been declared as rabies endemic area. Bali government has already implemented several efforts to control rabies, but it does not have any significant impact to make Bali free from the disease. This condition is not caused by limited resources only, but also by factors of socio-demographic dog’s ownership. This observational study using cross sectional design has been done to determine the public's knowledge and dog’s ownership related factors in Karangasem Regency. Nine villages were selected based on the positive rabies cases, which was formerly confirmed by laboratory tests. The Villages were divided into three category based on the socio-economic and culture, namely urban, sub urban and rural area. Data were analyzed descriptively and by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The results showed that from the 408 households, 252 respondents (61.8%) reported having the dogs. The percentage of dog ownership in urban, sub urban and rural is 17.6%, 9.8% and 34.3% respectively. It can be suggested that the rural area should be a priority in controlling rabies in Karangasem Regency.
