Abstract

This study aimed to prove whether or not the use of Spotify can develop the listening comprehension of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Palu. The research design used in this study was a quasi-experimental design, and used a quantitative approach to analyze the data. The population of this study was the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Palu. The researcher used purposive sampling and chose two groups: XD as the experimental group and XE as the control group, which each group consisted of 32 students. The instrument in collecting data was test (pre-test and post-test). The results of this study show that there is a significant difference in the increase in students' listening after being taught through the Spotify application. Data analysis shows that the tcounted (7,216) is higher than ttable (1,670) by applying a significance level of 0.05 with degrees of freedom (df) = 62. This means that the hypothesis is accepted. So, it can be said that Spotify can develop the students’ listening comprehension in learning English at SMA Negeri 2 Palu.

Abstract

This study reported the implementation of synchronous and asynchronous classes at Bintang Nusantara Learning Centre, focusing on the use of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method to develop students' speaking skills. This research was conducted as a case study, employing qualitative methods such as observations, interviews, and document analysis to gather in-depth data on the teaching and learning processes. The learning process was structured into three interconnected stages: pre-teaching, whilst teaching, and post-teaching, with each stage encompassing various activities designed to enhance student engagement and language proficiency. Despite the careful planning and execution of these activities, both teachers and students faced a range of technical and non-technical challenges throughout the learning process in both online and offline settings. Technical issues included unstable internet connections, inadequate devices (software and hardware), and varying levels of technological proficiency among both teachers and students , which disrupted the flow of online classes. Non-technical challenges involved a lack of motivation and engagement from students, as well as difficulties in replicating the interactive nature of CLT in a virtual environment. However, teachers and students collaborated to find solutions, such as employing alternative communication tools, adjusting lesson plans to better suit the online format, and providing additional support and encouragement to maintain student motivation. In offline classes, issues related to health protocols and classroom management were addressed by implementing smaller class sizes and ensuring compliance with safety measures. These efforts were critical in mitigating the impact of the challenges, allowing the teaching methodology to remain effective in both online and offline contexts.

Abstract

Slang is an informal type of language often used in everyday communication, especially on social media. Meanwhile, X, a popular social media platform, features many comments that frequently use slang words in its threads. Thus, this study aimed to classify the types of slang word formation and the functions of slang words found in comments on X. The theoretical framework for this study included Yule's (2010) theory on types of slang words and Zhou and Fan's (2013) theory on the functions of slang expressions. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from comments by users on Elon Musk's X account, uploaded by Elon Musk from July to August 2023. The findings identified several types of word formation: 1) clipping (7 data), 2) derivation (6 data), 3) acronyms (4 data), 4) borrowing (4 data), 5) coinage (2 data), 6) compounding (1 data), and 7) multiple processes (1 data). Among the types of word formation analyzed, clipping was the most common type of slang word formation found, with 7 examples identified. The main function of slang words in these comments was to express user’s feelings, especially their disappointment with the rebranding of Twitter to X. This suggests that users use slang and word creation techniques in a variety of ways, demonstrating linguistic innovation and originality in online communication. Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Chantal V. Johnson’s Post-Traumatic (2022), focusing on the main character, Vivian, through the DSM-5 framework. The objective is to examine how Vivian’s unresolved childhood trauma manifests in PTSD symptoms and how these align with the DSM-5 criteria. Using a qualitative research method, the analysis reviews key passages from the novel that depict PTSD-related behaviors, including flashbacks, emotional detachment, avoidance, and self-destructive tendencies. These passages are interpreted in relation to the DSM-5, highlighting how Vivian’s traumatic past continues to influence her psychological state, relationships, and coping mechanisms. The findings reveal that Vivian experiences chronic sleep disturbances, paranoia, hypervigilance, and unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and extreme dieting as forms of maladaptive coping. Her unresolved trauma intensifies these symptoms, affecting her ability to maintain stable personal and professional relationships. The study concludes that the portrayal of PTSD in Post-Traumatic (2022) strongly aligns with DSM-5 criteria, showing how trauma affects emotional regulation, self-perception, and social functioning. Vivian’s substance abuse and self-destructive behaviors serve as coping mechanisms, illustrating the lasting effects of trauma on her mental well-being. By analyzing these dynamics, the study emphasizes the importance of structured psychological frameworks like the DSM-5 in understanding the complexities of trauma in literary characters, providing deeper insights into how PTSD shapes identity and behavior, and illustrating the ongoing cycles of PTSD caused by unresolved trauma.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating how lesson study can be effectively utilized to support differentiated instruction in English language classrooms. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design to gain an in-depth understanding of how lesson study can support differentiated instruction in English language classrooms. The subjects were 12 English teachers, 4 English lecturers and students participating in the lesson study process. This research used purposive sampling technique in selecting participants based on specific criteria, such as teachers, lecturers, and students experienced in differentiated instruction and engage in the lesson study process. It was conducted in SMK Negeri 1 Palopo with two cycles. The research procedure consisting of four: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Over two cycles, the implementation of different process differentiation techniques revealed valuable insights. In the first cycle, the use of process differentiation through media choice allowed students autonomy in their learning but highlighted the challenges faced by lower-ability students. Heterogeneous grouping led to passive participation among weaker students, as they relied on their higher-ability peers, and the freedom to choose media did not fully address their learning needs. In the second cycle, process differentiation was enhanced by introducing homogeneous groups and worksheets tailored to students' abilities, alongside increased teacher assistance for the basic group. This more structured approach resulted in significant improvements in student engagement, particularly among lower-ability students who benefitted from focused support. The advanced and intermediate groups also thrived with tasks matched to their skill levels, demonstrating the success of ability-based differentiation.

Abstract

This research explores the cognitive development of Rapunzel, the main character in Disney’s Tangled (2010), using Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development as a framework. Piaget's framework, based on stages—Sensori-motor, Preoperational, and Formal Operational are applied to analyze Rapunzel’s growth from a sheltered upbringing to self-discovery. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on scenes and dialogue to track how her thinking develops. The research shows how Rapunzel learns to think logically, solve problems, and understand more complex ideas. Her journey from being innocent and influenced by her environment to becoming an independent thinker follows the stages of Piaget’s theory. By looking at her experiences, the reader can see how they challenge her understanding, help her become more independent, and lead her to a more mature way of thinking. Through this critical examination, the research highlights the relevance of Piaget’s theory in understanding character growth within narrative storytelling.
