Abstract

This research analyzes assertive illocutionary acts contained in the dialogue of the animated film "Up". Illocutionary acts, namely the actions intended to be carried out by an utterance, are an important aspect in pragmatics and speech act theory. This researcher used a qualitative descriptive approach to closely examine the language used by characters in the film and identify assertive illocutionary acts that convey information or make statements. Film scripts are the main data source in this research. This research uses theories from Searle and Halliday to answer questions from the research conducted. By analyzing representative illocutionary acts in dialogue, the research aims to provide insight into the themes, communication goals, and power dynamics present in the narrative of the film "Up". These findings contribute to a better understanding of how language is used to advance plots and develop characters in animated films.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using Google Translate as a machine translation students writings at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) Medan. The research method used in this study is a qualitative approach, and the research design used descriptive analysis. The data collection technique in this study used questionnaires and interviews, which were distributed to participants where a total of 20 questionnaires were answered based on their own opinions and reinforced with interview results. Participants in this study involved 10 English education students who used Google Translate (GT) as machine translation in translating their academic assignments. The result of this study is that GT has a significant impact on the grammatical accuracy and the quality of sentence structure in students' writing. However, this tool has a more pronounced strength in handling simple sentences compared to complex sentences. Although it is capable of providing a fairly helpful initial translation, the results still require manual review and additional editing to produce writing that is more natural and truly adheres to English grammar rules.

This class was taken as the sample through random sampling technique from 10 classes. The data were collected through the observation checklist, questionnaire, and interview. The findings of this research revealed that the English teacher’s teaching method of SMAN 8 Makassar Selatan influenced the students’ learning enthusiasm. It was proven by the result of the observation checklist, questionnaire, and interview. The observation checklist presented the teacher’s teaching method during the classroom which missed some indicators. The observation checklist for the students indicated less enthusiasm strengthened by the questionnaire revealing that most students were in moderate state of enthusiasm or in other words they have low degree of learning enthusiasm. Meanwhile, the result of the interview strengthened the data from observation checklist and questionnaire that the English teacher’s teaching method contributed to the students’ learning enthusiasm. Thus, the teacher’s teaching method is a determining factor of the students’ enthusiasm in learning especially learning English.

Abstract

Music serves as a universal medium for conveying moral values and social messages, exemplified by Maher Zain’s song “Palestine Will Be Free.” This study addresses the gap in analyzing the moral and figurative elements of the song, focusing on its contributions to moral education and social awareness. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the study examines the song’s lyrics and integrates insights from secondary sources to identify themes of justice, freedom, optimism, solidarity, and resilience. The analysis reveals that the song employs various figurative language techniques—such as metaphors, similes, and symbolism—to deliver its moral and emotional messages effectively. For example, the metaphor “Your soul will always be free” highlights the unyielding spirit of the Palestinian people despite oppression, while the recurring theme of solidarity fosters a sense of empathy and collective responsibility. The accompanying music video further amplifies the da'wah message, showcasing visuals of patience, faith, and hope in adversity. These findings affirm the song’s dual role as an artistic expression and a platform for moral advocacy, resonating with broader discussions on music’s potential to inspire ethical consciousness and social change. However, the study’s focus on lyrical and figurative analysis limits its scope, as it does not delve into the sociopolitical context or audience reception. Future research should explore these aspects, including cross-cultural interpretations and empirical studies on listener responses, to provide a deeper understanding of the song’s global impact.
