Abstract

This study aimed to examine the process of teaching and learning English listening using English movies, identify the challenges encountered by both teachers and students, and determine whether movies can enhance students’ listening skills. This mixed-method research was conducted at Junior High School Tasikmalaya and involved 25 ninth-grade students and one English teacher. Data were collected through document analysis, classroom observations, questionnaires, interviews, and pretest-posttest assessments. The intervention was implemented over four weeks and consisted of three instructional meetings. The findings revealed that the teacher followed the Merdeka Curriculum format and delivered listening instruction in three structured stages: pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening. Students faced several challenges, including unfamiliar vocabulary, rapid speech, listening anxiety, limited contextual understanding, passive viewing, and minimal exposure to authentic English outside the classroom. The teacher also experienced difficulties related to students' varying proficiency levels, technical and equipment issues, material selection, classroom management, and institutional constraints. The quantitative results indicated a significant improvement in students’ listening skills, with the mean pretest score increasing from 74.24 to 85.00 in the posttest. A paired sample t-test confirmed that this improvement was statistically significant (p < 0.001), demonstrating the effectiveness of English movies in enhancing listening comprehension in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of environment-based education on students' mastery of vocabulary at Junior High School. English, recognized as a global language, is essential for both educational and career advancement. However, Indonesian students often struggle with vocabulary acquisition. To evaluate how the integration of environmental elements into English learning can enhance vocabulary skills, this research adopts a qualitative approach. It employs observation, interviews, and documentation as key methods of assessment. The study involved an English teacher and 23 seventh-grade students, with a sample of 15 students selected for the research. The findings reveal that students faced challenges in retaining vocabulary due to conventional teaching methods and insufficient exposure to context. However, after introducing environment-based learning—where students observed and described objects in their school surroundings—they showed remarkable progress in vocabulary retention, comprehension, and application. This approach not only boosted their language skills but also heighted their motivation, engagement, and awareness of the environment. Overall, the results indicate that environment-based education is an effective strategy for enhancing vocabulary mastery, making the learning experience more meaningful and relevant to students' everyday lives.

Abstract

English proficiency is essential in a globalized world, particularly in academic and professional settings. This study examines students' perceptions of using Busuu, an online language learning application, to enhance their speaking skills. It also looked at students' views on their experience of the platform, including its advantages and disadvantages. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, among sixty-eight speaking class students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Data were collected through a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire and in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis. The findings reveal that students generally perceive Busuu as a useful and user-friendly tool for improving speaking skills, pronunciation, and independent learning. The application's structured exercises, real-time feedback, and accessibility contributed to its positive reception. However, challenges such as technical issues, limited free features, and content limitations were identified as barriers to effective utilization. Future research should explore the long-term impact of Busuu on speaking proficiency, investigate ways to integrate it with classroom instruction, and address identified limitations to maximize its effectiveness in diverse educational settings. The study contributes to the broader discourse on digital learning by reinforcing the role of scaffolding and interactionist theories in second language acquisition.

Abstract

This study aims to identify changes in the way individuals speak after a stroke based on psycholinguistic studies. The methods used to obtain information are descriptive qualitative and literature review. Information was obtained from interviews with respondents who had had a stroke. The respondent is a woman and she is 55 years old. The results showed that there were many changes experienced by individuals both in terms of physical social and emotional after a stroke. The most significant change is in the way individuals speak. Damage to the brain causes the patient to experience a stroke and its implications for other body nerves. One of them is speech disorders (speech aphasia). In conclusion, the brain and language influence each other both in processing language, acquiring language and understanding language. Therefore, if there is damage to the brain, it is difficult or even impossible for humans to process, produce and understand a language.

Abstract

This study aims to identify errors that are often made by 5th semester English language students in completing tree diagram assignments, especially in analyzing sentence structures in the Syntax course. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data analysis techniques in the form of content analysis of 22 students who were divided into 10 groups to work on the task of making tree diagrams from English news texts from various sources. Based on the analysis, several types of main errors were found, namely errors in identifying word categories (168 words), incorrect node labeling (42 node labeling), and incorrect application of phrase structures (11 phrase structures). In addition, students also have difficulty in understanding the hierarchical relationship between syntactic elements, such as the correct placement of determiners and auxiliary verbs. These errors are often caused by a lack of understanding of basic word categories and the underlying syntactic rules. This study reveals that making tree diagrams requires a deep understanding not only of syntactic theory, but also its practical application in everyday sentence analysis. Errors in node labeling and errors in syntactic category identification indicate the need for a more contextual and deeper understanding-based learning approach.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of using TikTok as a learning medium on students' English language skills in higher education. Using a quantitative approach and descriptive-correlational survey design, data was collected from 124 active university students from various study programs who use TikTok in their English learning process. The instrument used was a closed-ended questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale, which measured the intensity of TikTok use (X) and English language skills (Y), including vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency. The statistical analysis showed a very strong correlation between TikTok usage and English language skills, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.935. The R Square value of 0.875 indicates that 87.5% of the variability of English skills can be explained by the use of TikTok, while the remaining 12.5% is influenced by other factors. Each one-unit increase in TikTok usage increased English skills by 0.861 units (p < 0.001). The findings suggest that TikTok can be an effective learning media in improving English language skills, especially in vocabulary and listening skills. The practical implication is that educators can utilize this digital platform to support more contextualized and engaging learning.
