Abstract

In today's borderless world, people move quickly, forming diaspora communities with complex cultural lives. The culture shock that causes mental health disruption is common in these diaspora communities. Therefore, the study of this diaspora is crucial to be conducted. The novel entitled How to be an American Housewife represents the difficulties of becoming a diaspora subject in a new country with a new culture. This study focuses on the diaspora experience undergone by Shoko Morgan. The study aims to show the construction of diaspora identity, the condition of the Japanese diaspora community in America, and the author's critical position. This descriptive qualitative research utilized the cultural identity and diaspora theory proposed by Stuart Hall to unveil the diaspora identity in the novel. This research reveals that identity is always in some process of adaptation, transformation, and differences from new environments. The literary work under scrutiny shows the experience of Japanese immigrants at that time, such as feeling alienated, isolated, and discriminated against. Through this novel, Margaret Dilloway has represented her mother's challenging life experiences as a diaspora subject in the USA.

Abstract

Islamic lectures are potent media for people to influence others, specific groups, and society. Based on this case, this research aims to identify and analyze the types of persuasive strategies used by Zakir Naik in his Islamic Lecture under the theme “Islam and the 21st Century,” which took place at the Oxford Union. This descriptive and qualitative research used the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach proposed by Teun A. Van Dijk. Furthermore, Aristotle’s Rhetorical Theory of Persuasion was employed to support the analysis of how persuasive strategies were applied in the Islamic lecture. The data of this research were the sentences of the speech text transcription, which contained persuasive strategies spoken by Zakir Naik in his “Islam and the 21st Century” Oxford Union Islamic Lecture uploaded on his YouTube Channel. The results show three categories of “socio-cognitive” CDA by Teun A. Van Dijk, namely, text, cognition, and social context, which are used to analyze the speech text and its relation to social and power. Concerning this, the persuasive strategies analysis shows that Zakir Naik uses three types of rhetorical proofs from a total of 121 data, which include ethical proof (ethos), logical proof (logos), and emotional proof (pathos). Ethos is the most common rhetorical proof in his Islamic lecture, making up 63.5% of the speech. It is followed by pathos (33.58% of the speech) and logos (27.22% of the speech).

Abstract

The fourth industrial revolution impacts the education system and student learning. Education must be capable of developing and designing 21st-century life skills learning, one of which is critical thinking abilities. The PBL model is used to guide efforts. This research aims to improve student’s critical thinking through Project-Based Learning (PBL). This research used a quantitative method, which is a quasi-experimental research design, by applying a non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design. The study was carried out at Semarang City High School. This study’s sample size was 200 students from Semarang City High School. The data were obtained through the critical thinking test. This research used a t-test with a significant level of 0.05 to analyze the data. Based on the research analysis, Students in the control group boosted their critical thinking score by 9.58 points, from 65 to 74.58. Meanwhile, the experimental group students’ critical thinking score jumped by 19.99 points, from 60.77 to 80.76. The increase in the critical thinking score is 10.41. The result also showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000. This number is less than 0.05. It indicated that is accepted. Based on the result of the Sig. (2-tailed) value t-test calculation, it can be concluded that due to the diverse learning methods applied, there are disparities in students’ critical thinking results with the acceptance. Project-based learning improves students’ critical thinking skills. The conclusion is that the PBL paradigm improves students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the impact of positive psychology, experiential learning (EL), and scaffolding on classroom engagement and motivation, focusing on enhancing teaching and learning effectiveness. It was conducted with 44 students and two instructors who implemented scaffolding guidance in shared experience sessions. The research design involved pre and post-tests to assess changes in students' classroom engagement and motivation levels, resulting from the application of scaffolding teaching and experiential learning (EL) methods. Analysis of pre and post-test results suggests that scaffolding teaching and EL methodologies significantly impact students' classroom engagement and motivation. The study found these methods to enhance the quality of teaching and learning by emphasizing the development of abilities and experiences. This study underscores the value of integrating scaffolding and EL into educational practices to bolster students' engagement and motivation in the classroom setting. The exploration of various tips and strategies drawn from shared experiences revealed their effectiveness in improving test scores and overall learning outcomes. In conclusion, this study advocates for the broader application of these methodologies to foster improved educational achievements and learner experiences.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the stylistic and linguistic selection in representing women in Jane Austen’s novel entitled Emma by emphasizing the gender specific words presented in the novel and discover the gender specific theme exposed in the novel. This research conducts a qualitative analysis to explore the stylistic and linguistic choices employed in depicting women in Jane Austen's novel, "Emma." Focusing on gender-specific words within the text, the study aims to uncover the novel's thematic presentation of gender. Utilizing Sara Mills' feminist stylistics theory as a framework, the linguistic structure at the word level is examined to portray female characters and assess its societal impact. By decoding Austen's linguistic strategies, this analysis provides a critical lens for examining gender representation within the novel and its broader societal implications. The study contributes to literary and linguistic scholarship, enhancing the understanding of Austen's narrative techniques and shedding light on societal perceptions of gender.

Abstract

In 2023, Yogyakarta Province has documented 308 instances of sexual violence, including cases of verbal abuse. This fact is surprising given Yogyakarta's unique position as a cultural showcase in Indonesia, which is particularly evident in its depictions of politeness and identity. In contrast, Yogyakarta's Javanese propriety culture, known as unggah-ungguh, functions as a vital protective mechanism for its community by integrating local cultural components. This distinctive cultural politeness parallels Leech's Six Maxims of Politeness: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim. This research examines the correlation between these maxims and Javanese parenting practices as delineated in publications by the Department of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control of Yogyakarta, aimed at educators and parents in Yogyakarta, emphasizing the significance of courteous communication and virtuous conduct grounded in Javanese tradition. Strengthening the initiative from school to university levels, together with adequate support from family and community, may lead to a reduction in verbal sexual assault.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of a systematic review based on published studies on the genre-based approach (GBA) in writing explanation texts. The studies reviewed were from 2019-2023 with a total of ten studies. The objective of this review is to show how GBA enhances students’ writing skills in explanation texts, as well as the research trends related to GBA in the context of explanation texts. This review used thematic analysis to categorize the main themes that emerge in the selected studies. The findings show that the genre-based approach to writing explanation texts is very effective and enables students to understand and produce coherent, cohesive, and well-organized written works, as well as to improve their awareness and creativity skills, as they learn to examine, evaluate, and produce explanation texts, especially with the support of media or other techniques such as images, and jigsaw. These findings confirm that the genre-based approach improves students’ skills in writing explanation texts. Regarding the publication trends by year, there has been a limited number of research on GBA in the genre of explanation texts in the last 5 years, with the peak of publication in 2023 and 2020 (3 articles each), and the lowest in 2019 and 2022 (1 article each). In addition, most of the publications on this topic in the last 5 years came from Asian countries, with Indonesia leading the list, followed by Thailand.

Abstract

William Faulkner`s A Rose for Emily is narrated in a complex narrative structure, thus, making it difficult to follow the story`s chronology despite its relatively short form. This article provides a different approach using Propp`s narratology to show that the story can be read as a modern fairy tale but with some twisted elements. The analysis focuses on the sequence of events based on Propp`s 31 narrative functions. The analysis also highlights the characters performing the functions following Propp`s seven types of dramatis personae. The findings reveal that the events in A Rose for Emily conform to some of the narrative functions of a fairy tale. The initial situation introduces Emily as the heroine of the story, followed by her father's death, which represents the absentation function. In the middle of the narrative, the villainy function serves as the complication of the story. The story`s end is also similar to a fairy tale by the wedding function. However, these fairy tale elements are presented in twisted ways. Emily was introduced only when she died, and she poisoned Homer to be able to live with him ever after. Meanwhile, Emily and Homer also provide twists as the story's heroine and villain.
