Abstract

Translating literary works such as novels, poetry, short stories, and dramas is widely conducted in Indonesia to introduce literature to the Indonesian people. In translating literary works, the transfer of messages from the source language must be appropriate and flexible in the target language because literary works have their aesthetic function, so translators need to have a broad knowledge of the qualified sociocultural background. Translators do not only translate meaning but also translate the values of literary works such as moral value and cultural value. The role of translators is to find out the equivalence in the target language and use their creativity to solve the non-equivalence in the target text. Equivalence is the main concept to achieve translation quality. This study aims to find the type of translation shift that occurred in the translated version of the children’s book entitled ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ based on Catford theory and to analyse the equivalence of translation according to Popovic. This research is qualitative research which applies content analysis. The data was collected through documentation. It is found that there are level shifts and category shifts in the translated version of The House at Pooh Corner. In addition, the types of equivalence found in this research are paradigmatic equivalence, stylistic equivalence, and textual equivalence. This research is expected to be used as the material for students to understand more about shifts and equivalence in literary translation

Abstract

In this research, we analyzed the frequency, usage, and changes of pronouns in the translation of Satan’s Slave 2: Communion. This research was conducted by examining changes in subject or object pronouns from Indonesian to English in the movie subtitle. We transferred the clean version of the subtitle into a spreadsheet, into which we incorporated necessary context information such as presented in 3 categories; pronoun to pronoun, pronoun to omission, and pronoun to reference. The results show that the use and change of pronouns in the translation process of Satan’s Slave 2 are attached by at least two aspects: grammatical and socio-cultural aspects. The difference in the principle of linguistic rules between Indonesian and English becomes an important factor behind the transposition and modulation of pronouns in the translation process. The sociocultural differences between Indonesian and English also need to be carefully examined before translating, because there are significant differences in the use of pronouns between Indonesian and English, especially related to sociocultural aspects that affect the use of language towards interlocutors.

Abstract

Regulation of the Minister of National Education number 16 of 2007 stated that Teachers at the Elementary school level (SD/MI), or other equivalent forms, must have a minimum educational academic qualification of diploma four (D-IV) or bachelor (S1) in the field of Primary Education (D-IV/S1 PGSD/PGMI) or psychology obtained from an accredited study program. Thus, there are many schools that have English teachers from non-English educational backgrounds (NEB) rather than English teachers from English educational backgrounds (EEB). This condition will affect the quality of English teaching in Elementary schools. In order to evaluate further the suitability of government regulation regarding teachers’ criteria in teaching Elementary students, this study was to compare the pedagogical competence of English and non-English educational background teachers in teaching English at the elementary school level. The design of the study is qualitative research with a case study approach. The researcher took four English teachers consisting of two English teachers with EEB and two English teachers with NEB. This study used interviews, observation, and questionnaires to collect the data. This study used 10 indicators from the Ministry of Education, 2007. The results showed that from the 10 aspects, it can be highlighted that English teachers from EEB and English teachers from NEB have similarities and differences in implementing the indicators of pedagogical competence established by the Ministry of Education, 2007. It showed that the English teachers from EEB are more dominant in implementing indicators 1,2,8,9,10. Furthermore, the English teachers from NEB are more dominant in indicators 6 and 7. Thus, they have similarities in the rest of the indicators (3,4,5).

Abstract

Thinking-Aloud or Think-Aloud Protocols have been used to study thinking processes in varied fields such as psychology, business, sports, industry, and education. Recently, studies have tried to see its application in teaching in both offline and online modes. Despite its success, as demonstrated by these studies, controversies concerning the believability of thinking aloud and the process of reactivity have been raised. However, no explicit solution has been provided. In response to the issues, this paper critically reviewed examples of think-aloud protocols using Bowles’s guide to TAP (2008). The results show that (1) problems of the reactivity process stem from the nature of the tasks given, and (2) to minimize the problems of reactivity, the TAP data collection procedure should move from the least to the most intervention of the researcher.

Abstract

As one of English basic skills, writing is considered the most difficult skill for students, such as arranging correct sentences, writing the topic sentence, organizing ideas, and lack of vocabulary. Therefore, an appropriate learning model and media that support understanding and development of writing skills can help students to increase their writing ability. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Project-Based Learning through the Canva application to improve students’ writing achievement in describing historical and tourism places as one of the basic competencies that students should master at the senior high school level. This study aimed to find out whether Project-Based Learning and the Canva application influence students’ writing and to analyze the development of students’ writing after implementing PjBL by making written text using the Canva application.  The writers used a quantitative method which is a quasi-experimental research design by applying a non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design. The data were obtained through the writing test in collecting students’ scores. To analyze the data, the writer used a t-test with a significant level of 0.05. The samples were two classes in the tenth grade of SMA Karya Pembangunan Cicalengka which consisted of 66 students. Based on the research analysis, students’ average score on the pre-test was 55.3 and students’ average score on the post-test was 75.37. The result also showed that ttable was 1.669 and tvalue was 2.924, which means that ttable was higher thantvalue at significant level 5%. It indicated thatH0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the result of t-test calculation, it can be stated that the use of PjBL through Canva application is effective to facilitate students in improving students’ learning achievement, especially in writing descriptive text about historical and tourism places.

Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis is a form of analysis that aims to reveal ideology, power, political attitudes, and gender. In this study, Critical Discourse Analysis is used to reveal the ideology and power contained in the language used by the author in Nyadran's book. Every discourse that discusses a topic of ideology and power always contains prejudice. This is what makes language expressions contain symbolic meanings. The critical discourse analysis that has been carried out in Nyadran-Belajar Toleransi pada Tradisi by Fajriyatun Nurhidayati can be concluded that to express ideology in a literary text, language cannot be placed in a closed manner. Nonetheless, the context within a literary text serves as a crucial factor in shaping discourse ideology. Furthermore, literary works are inherently intertwined with the author's creative circumstances, thereby rendering the interpretation of textual meaning inseparable from the employed language. Within this examination, it's evident that ideology in literary compositions and language itself defies rigid categorization, underscoring the significance of the contextual backdrop as a fundamental influencer on the ideology woven into the discourse.

Abstract

A journal article review is an academic writing that summarizes and assesses others’ research-based articles. For doctoral students, reviewing a journal article is usually to train them for building their argument and broadening their knowledge of an issue. The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality of article reviews written in English by one class consisting of twelve Indonesian EFL doctoral students in their first semester at a university in Semarang, Indonesia. Twelve reviews written by the students were collected. The evaluation of their writings is based on Systemic Functional Grammar, particularly the interpersonal metafunction analysis, that is, the analysis of generic structure and appraisal. Therefore, this study employs textual analyses. The analysis of generic structure refers to the template from the Writing Centre of Thompson Rivers University, and the analysis of appraisal follows Martin and White’s appraisal system (2005). The discussion of this article explains the generic structure and lexico-grammatical realizations of evaluative stances used by the students. The findings indicate that not all doctoral students can organize their review following the generic structure and optimize the use of appraisal items. This exploratory investigation provides some pedagogical implications for the teaching of academic writings in EFL contexts.
