Abstract

This editorial note situates the articles in Religious: Journal of Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies, Vol. 9 No. 1 (2025), within broader global debates on religion, culture, and social change. It argues that religion, far from receding under secularization and globalization, continues to function as an adaptive social infrastructure. Drawing on case studies from Indonesia (Bali, Toraja, Maluku, Papua) and comparative contexts (Ghana, Rwanda, Europe, and beyond), the contributions collectively highlight five interrelated themes: religion as a framework for social cohesion and conflict resolution, the transformation and re-enchantment of sacred spaces, women’s agency and visibility in religious life, religion’s ambivalent role in radicalism and security, and the historical reinvention of traditions as cultural memory. By weaving together classical theories with contemporary phenomena—including digital media, commodification, and gendered visibility—this issue demonstrates the continued relevance of religion in negotiating identity, fostering peace, and sustaining plural societies in a global age.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of pre-marital counselling based on Christian values in preventing interfaith marriage and shaping Christian families grounded in the unity of faith. The research employs a qualitative approach with data collected through participant observation at the Pentecostal Church of Mangseng, North Bekasi, and at Taruna Kristen AMC Bekasi. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with pastors, counsellors, and participants, while theological and pastoral literature studies were carried out to strengthen the empirical findings with a biblical and academic conceptual framework concerning Christian marriage. The findings reveal that pre-marital counselling plays a significant role in strengthening the spiritual, emotional, and moral preparedness of couples to build Christ-centered households. Moreover, the youth formation program conducted at Taruna Kristen AMC Bekasi proved effective as an early preventive strategy to instill awareness of the dangers of interfaith relationships. These findings affirm that pre-marital counselling functions not merely as a technical preparation for marriage but also as an intergenerational faith-education medium that nurtures spiritual resilience and moral commitment among Christians. The implications of this research indicate that churches need to develop pastoral formation models that are empathetic, dialogical, and contextually relevant, ensuring that pre-marital counselling remains effective amid globalization and shifting social values. The originality of this study lies in the integration of theological teaching, pastoral practice, and youth faith education as a comprehensive strategy for preventing interfaith marriage. Thus, this research contributes to strengthening pastoral theology and developing a relevant pre-marital counselling model for churches in Indonesia.

Abstract

Islamization has been one of the dominant discourses in the Ponorogo region, shaping various aspects of social and cultural life. The traditional art of Reyog Ponorogo represents a local cultural practice that cannot be separated from this discourse. This study aims to examine the influence of Islamization discourse on the traditions of Reyog Ponorogo. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach and a critical paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman. Michel Foucault’s discourse theory (1926–1984) serves as the primary analytical framework. The findings reveal that Islamization discourse in Ponorogo has significantly transformed the values embedded in Reyog Ponorogo and shaped public perceptions of traditional culture. This transformation is evident in the modification of song lyrics, costume design, ritual offerings, and the gemblak tradition. Furthermore, Islamization has influenced how Reyog Ponorogo is practiced within the broader context of cultural development and preservation. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of shifting cultural identity in Ponorogo and demonstrates the relevance of Foucault’s theory in analyzing the dynamics of religious discourse. The originality of this research lies in its application of Foucault’s discourse theory to the transformation of Reyog Ponorogo, a perspective that has not been systematically explored in previous studies.

Abstract

This study examines Plato’s Theaetetus through the lens of philosophy and the phenomenology of religion, focusing on the interplay between epistemology, religiosity, and the life of the polis. The purpose is to analyze how Socrates situates the pursuit of knowledge within a religious-philosophical framework, especially through the notions of daimonion as personal religiosity, communal religiosity of the polis, myth as allegory, and the theion as a moral horizon. Using a qualitative design with hermeneutic and phenomenological approaches, the research employs close reading of Plato’s texts (Theaetetus with Euthyphro, Apology, Critias, Phaedo, and Laws) to interpret key terms such as daimonion, theion, and logos. The findings show that knowledge in Theaetetus is never finalized but appears as a dialogical process of purification through logos and dianoia; myth is used critically as allegory; the daimonion functions as an ethical compass rather than epistemic mediator; and the theion is conceived as a non-anthropomorphic moral guide. Civic obedience remains, yet grounded in rationality rather than fear of the gods. The implications affirm Theaetetus as both epistemological and religious-philosophical, enriching discourse on knowledge, religiosity, and public life, and highlighting the relevance of Socratic epistemology for education, ethics, and democracy. The originality lies in positioning Theaetetus as a text that unifies knowledge, faith, and law in a reflective framework.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of punden folklore in preserving and transmitting the religious, moral, and social values of rural Javanese Muslim communities, particularly in Dukun Subdistrict, Gresik, Indonesia. This research is significant because the punden tradition represents a form of local religiosity that harmoniously integrates Islamic teachings with Javanese cultural practices, reflecting a dynamic synthesis between Islam and indigenous wisdom. The study employs a qualitative method, with data collected through observation and in-depth interviews involving local residents, religious leaders, and custodians of sacred sites. The findings reveal that punden folklore functions as a living value system that sustains the religious and social life of the Dukun community. First, pilgrimages and veneration of saintly figures such as Mbah Asyari and Mbah Banjur instill values of devotion, spiritual remembrance, and ta’dhim (reverence) as expressions of lived religiosity. Second, sedekah bumi and pilgrimage rituals demonstrate a harmonious integration of Islamic practices with Javanese cultural symbols such as flower scattering, incense, wayang, and pencak silat. Third, these traditions function as moral education and social adhesive that cultivate patience, sincerity, and humility while reinforcing guyub rukun (social harmony) and ecological awareness across generations. In practical terms, the study affirms that the punden tradition serves not only as an element of intangible cultural heritage but also as a social and religious mechanism that strengthens community resilience. The originality of this research lies in its integrative approach, which positions punden folklore as a living social and spiritual practice, offering new insights into Islamic–Javanese syncretism and the preservation of religious cultural heritage in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study analyzes the habituation practices of interreligious harmony in the disruptive era by examining Tanon Village, a multi-faith rural community in Kediri Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The village represents a unique case of long-standing plural coexistence that has successfully transitioned into the digital age. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the research integrates Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation of both offline and online interactions, including community WhatsApp groups and YouTube-based content. The findings reveal three interrelated dimensions that sustain harmony the reproduction of habitus through everyday interfaith practices such as slametan, gotong royong, and mutual participation in religious festivities; the adaptation of habitus within the digital field, where technology facilitates new forms of dialogue, coordination, and symbolic representation; and the integration of social and cultural capital through collaboration among religious leaders, youth, and village officials, reinforcing trust, empathy, and inclusivity. Together, these mechanisms demonstrate that interreligious harmony in Tanon is organic, adaptive, and transgenerational—rooted in local traditions yet responsive to technological change. The findings affirm that digital technology, when grounded in moral and cultural capital, can strengthen rather than threaten interfaith relations. The originality of this research lies in its integration of Bourdieu’s theoretical framework with digital ethnography, producing a new perspective for understanding how traditional values of tolerance are rearticulated and sustained within an ever-evolving digital ecosystem.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of political bargaining and the application of religious economy logic in shaping constitutional policy outcomes in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, during the 1939 Constituent Convention. The research aims to understand how local political configurations enabled the maintenance of secular education in the provincial constitution despite strong institutional support for religious education from the Catholic Church, which was backed by ecclesiastical networks, Catholic media, and executive political maneuvers. Using a qualitative historical approach, the study analyzes archival sources, including official session minutes, debate transcripts, and attendance records of convention members. The findings reveal that the Catholic Church engaged in strategic issue trading—exchanging concessions on moral policies such as education for gains on other agendas like gambling prohibition—while local secular coalitions of teachers, intellectuals, cross-party politicians, and segments of the Catholic elite successfully defended the principle of educational neutrality. These results contribute to the literature on religion and politics in Latin America by highlighting how provincial-level dynamics can diverge from national trends when supported by effective coalition-building, public mobilization, and pragmatic negotiation strategies. The study’s implications suggest that while such bargaining can produce balanced policy outcomes, it also risks fostering moral relativism and eroding institutional credibility when values are subordinated to short-term political gains. The originality of this research lies in its focus on a subnational case that challenges the predominant national pattern in Argentina’s religious-political relations, offering a nuanced analytical framework for understanding adaptive and pragmatic interactions between religion and politics in localized contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the development of Christology and contextual theology in Papua over the past decade and its implications for academic discourse, church practice, and the strengthening of inclusive theology. The research employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the PRISMA protocol, analyzing 33 journal articles published between 2014 and 2024 that explicitly addressed the Papuan context. Data were collected from national and international academic databases and analyzed thematically to map trends, methodological approaches, and research gaps. The findings show that contextual theology in Papua is dominated by qualitative approaches, particularly case studies and literature studies, with a strong focus on integrating Christian faith and local cultural symbols. Four main patterns were identified: symbolic Christology, relational Christology, contextual-liberation Christology, and early signs of ecological Christology. The production of theological knowledge is concentrated in highland communities and institutions such as STFT GKI I.S. Kijne Jayapura, while coastal, southern, and western regions remain underrepresented. Contextual Christology addressing suffering, spirituality, and social identity also remains underexplored. The implications highlight the need for a more inclusive contextual theology that integrates local values, cultural rituals, and interfaith dialogue. Practically, the study recommends reforming theological curricula based on local culture, developing contextual liturgical practices, and strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance the church’s role as an agent of social transformation. The originality of this study lies in its systematic mapping of previously fragmented literature, providing a more structured framework rooted in the lived faith experiences of Papuan communities while enriching global theological discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between religiosity and quality of life through a comprehensive meta-analysis, motivated by inconsistent findings in previous research that range from strong positive correlations to weak or non-significant associations. Understanding this relationship is crucial for clarifying the psychological and social functions of religiosity in contemporary societies. This research employed a quantitative meta-analytic design by synthesizing 31 Scopus-indexed empirical studies published between 2015 and 2024. Data were extracted in the form of correlation coefficients and analyzed using a random-effects model, accompanied by heterogeneity tests, publication bias assessments, and robustness checks. This methodological approach ensured systematic data integration without presenting technical details excessively. The findings show a significant positive correlation between religiosity and quality of life (r = 0.32; 95% CI [0.20, 0.44]; p < 0.001). Substantial heterogeneity (Q = 656.535; p < 0.001) suggests that cultural, demographic, and methodological differences may moderate this relationship. The absence of publication bias and a high fail-safe N value (5,109) further confirm the stability of the results. These findings imply that religiosity functions as a meaningful psychological, social, and spiritual resource capable of enhancing individual well-being across diverse populations. The results contribute to the development of resilience- and spirituality-based interventions in psychological, health, and community settings. The originality of this study lies in its synthesis of a full decade of empirical evidence, offering the most updated meta-analytic confirmation of the religiosity–quality of life relationship. This research provides new value by integrating large-scale data, addressing inconsistencies in prior findings, and strengthening theoretical and practical understanding of how religiosity contributes to human well-being.

Abstract

Climate change poses a global challenge that has prompted the search for alternative mitigation approaches beyond technological solutions and formal policy frameworks, including those grounded in religious practices and indigenous local wisdom. This study analyzes the Baduy worldview through the selametan ubar pare ritual as a form of ecological ethics rooted in intersubjective relations between humans and nature. The research adopts a qualitative approach using ethnographic methods. Data collection involved participant observation and in-depth interviews conducted over a 30-day period within the Baduy community, complemented by systematic documentation of ritual practices, customary institutions, and huma agricultural activities. The findings demonstrate that the Baduy community constructs a relational ontology and epistemology that positions nature not as a passive object but as a living, responsive, and morally agentive relational subject. The community institutionalizes this relationship through pikukuh karuhun and enacts it concretely in the selametan ubar pare ritual, which integrates religious beliefs, traditional ecological knowledge, and sustainable agricultural practices. The ritual functions as a preventive mechanism that limits resource exploitation, regulates planting and harvesting rhythms through the customary calendar, and strengthens social solidarity and community resilience. Accordingly, climate change mitigation in the Baduy context operates not through technocratic interventions but through the internalization of ecological ethics and reciprocal human–nature relations embedded in everyday practice. The implications of this study affirm that indigenous religious ritual practices can serve as an ethical infrastructure for ecological sustainability at the local level. The originality of this research lies in interpreting indigenous ritual as an intersubjectivity-based ecological epistemology and ethic, thereby extending the field of religion and environmental studies while challenging perspectives that reduce indigenous rituals to symbolic, irrational, or premodern practices.
