Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Reading assessment in early grades is commonly understood as a technical skill. However, the ability to make meaning from texts is a social practice also shaped by the mother tongue, culture, and pupils’ everyday experiences. This study aims to analyze changes in early-grade students’ literacy achievements after the implementation of the Balanced Reading Program in Badung Regency. In addition, the study examines cultural representation in the reading assessment instrument and discusses it from the perspectives of epistemic justice and cultural familiarity. The research uses a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative analysis of baseline–endline data with qualitative document analysis of the assessment instrument. Quantitative data were obtained from baseline and endline tests without a control group. First- to third-grade pupils sampled at baseline numbered 320 and at endline 312. The sample was spread across six elementary schools. A total of 189 traceable paired data were analyzed using paired t-tests, Wilcoxon tests, Cohen’s d effect sizes, and rank-biserial correlations. The analysis shows statistically significant improvements in syllables (p < .001), nonword reading (p = .006), fluency (p = .017), and comprehension (p = .018), but with small to moderate effect sizes, so their practical significance should be interpreted proportionally. Letter-sound knowledge (p = .713) and listening (p = 1.000) tended to remain stagnant. Instrument review shows that, in general, the assessment texts are close to children’s world. However, the texts have not systematically integrated local languages, home literacy practices, and the socio-cultural landscape of Bali. These findings indicate potential problems of epistemic injustice in the design of reading assessments. Students may be evaluated using texts that do not necessarily provide equal opportunities to construct meaning. As conceptual implications and an agenda for further research, this study recommends developing reading assessments that are more culturally responsive.

Abstract

The discovery of a dichotomy between general science and religious science both in terms oftheory and practice in the implementation of learning at the elementary / junior high school / highschool / equivalent and university levels in Indonesia causes various problems. The purpose ofthis study is to find a hypothetical model of evaluating the integration of Islamic values in sociologylearning in fostering Islamic character at SMA PGII 2 Bandung. This research uses a qualitativeapproach and descriptive method of case study types. The researcher acts as the maininstrument. Data retrieval techniques with interviews, observations, and documentation studies.Data analysis techniques with data reduction, data coding, data display, interpretation of findingsand drawing conclusions. Test the credibility of the data by extending the research time, increasing perseverance, triangulating data, using reference materials and focus groupdiscussions. Based on the results of the study, the evaluation of the integration of Islamic valuesin sociology learning at SMA PGII 2 Bandung has not occurred comprehensively. The evaluationin sociology learning has been systematically planned. Aspects evaluated as well as planning inlearning tools include aspects of attitudes, knowledge, and skills. The attitude evaluationinstrument in sociology learning is almost the same as schools in general, namely using anattitude evaluation instrument based on the 2013 curriculum. However, in its implementation, theemphasis on evaluation is still dominant in the aspect of knowledge. The development of socialattitudes and skills of students after participating in sociology learning integrated with Islamicvalues has not been felt thoroughly, because the attitudes assessed have not been integratedwith ilāhiah values. On the other hand, the written evaluation of the integration of Islamic valuesin sociology learning at the level of material substance has not been integrated, because theteacher only evaluates the material as it is in the package book.

Abstract

The discourse around youth political participation often seems pejorative. Many earlier studiescontinue to emphasise youth political apathy, a notion that has long been debunked. Othersreduce urban youth’s political engagement to merely digital activism, largely due to recentinformation and technological advancements. However, this research presents a more nuancedview, arguing that the current political engagement of urban youth is characterised by a balanceof optimism and realism. An online survey of 205 Indonesian youths from various cities wasconducted to gauge their perspectives on political participation, including their views on the 2024general elections. They were asked to examine some sets of statements as descriptions andexplanations of their political stances. The results suggest that urban youth in Indonesia are keento be politically active, including in the 2024 general elections. They stay informed, regularlyfollowing political news and candidate debates, signalling hope for a healthier democracy. However, they remain pragmatic, recognising the flaws in politics, such as corruption, inefficientadministration, and political dynasties, which they view as the “dirty side” of politics. This dualperspective reflects a more complex political stance, where youth are motivated to participate yetgrounded in the reality of the political system’s imperfections.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the impact of online loans on the consumptive behavior of students in the city of Bandung. Online loans have become a significant phenomenon in today's modern society, especially among students vulnerable to the influence of the digital economy. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The data collection techniques used were observation and in-depth interviews. There were 12 informants in this study, consisting of 10 key informants who are students and two supporting informants. The research was conducted at the UPI Setiabudhi campus and Pasundan University in the city of Bandung. The theoretical analysis uses Ulrich Beck's concept of the risk society to analyze changes in modern society that are increasingly filled with complex risks in the context of online loans and the consumptive behavior of students. The results of this research indicate that online loans significantly impact students' consumptive behavior. Factors such as ease of access, product promotions, and social pressure encourage students to take online loans, thereby influencing their consumptive habits. Based on the research results, students in Bandung use the money from online loans for consumptive and hedonistic needs and lifestyles, such as hanging out, indulging, vacations, attending concerts, nightlife entertainment (clubbing), buying electronic goods, and showcasing possessions on social media.
