Abstract

The linkage of technology in the world of education today has developed rapidly. One of them is the development of mathematics learning media in the form of educational games. The purpose of this research is to develop an educational learning media game that is integrated into Timor local wisdom so that this media has its uniqueness to help students learn. Research on a fast educational game on mathematics based on an android smartphone was conducted at MTs Nurul Falah, Kefamenanu, NTT. The media was developed using software construct 2. The method used in this research is development research with the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The results of the validity test based on material experts, media experts, and teachers indicate that educational games with the theme of local wisdom as android-based mathematics learning media were included in the category of very feasible to use with an average validation of 4.33 and very feasible criteria. At this stage, a limited trial using a questionnaire showed that game education received a positive response to the use of game education media with an average percentage of 98.93%. These results indicate that the process of learning mathematics using this media can motivate and facilitate student learning compared to the learning that has been done. During the pandemic, COVID-19 media can be used as online-based learning media because students can easily download the application then the teacher controls the process.

Abstract

Preservice mathematics teachers (PSMTs) need to master teaching material besides pedagogical competence. This knowledge is a combination of conceptual and procedural knowledge. Teachers should possess the ability to explain a concept, the reason for the concepts used, and the relationship among several concepts clearly and effectively to identify why the concept is used. This study aimed to identify the conceptual and procedural knowledge of PSMTs in Linear Algebra courses. Data collection was carried out through tests and interviews. The interview was conducted with several participants to clarify their test answers. The participants' interview answers revealed that they had difficulty in choosing the proper concept answering modified questions. Also, the participants tried to answer the question using a procedural approach. According to the findings, it is vital to construct appropriate teaching materials appropriate for the learning objective and material map concept.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze and describe the eleventh-grade senior high school students' mathematical communication skills on linear program material in terms of concrete and abstract sequential thinking styles. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with the case study method. The sampling technique used was the purposive sampling technique. The mathematical communication skills test and thinking style questionnaires were employed as the data collecting technique. The analysis revealed that subjects in the AS category could make generalizations based on good reasoning in the written text aspect. On the other hand, subjects in the CS category were having a hard time constructing abstract assumptions. In the drawing aspect, subjects in the AS category showed good theories and concept understanding. In contrast, subjects in the CS category were only able to apply some of the information to draw graphs. In mathematical expressions, subjects in the AS category could process the information implied by the problem to make mathematical models correctly. Meanwhile, subjects in the CS category needed additional information or direction to understand the information to avoid mistakes.

Abstract

The Ethnomathematics-based STEM (Ethno-STEM) approach is currently one of the topics that receive attention to improve students' conceptual understanding. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the Ethno-STEM approach on students’ conceptual understanding. This study utilized quantitative data with a quasi-experiment. One class was chosen through a simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were conceptual understanding tests and an observation sheet of learning implementation. The data analysis techniques used were descriptive and inferential analysis, as well as the criteria of effect in instruction. Key findings point towards the importance of building an Ethno-STEAM approach that supports the conceptual understandings. Identification of critical elements of the teachers’ supports led to recommendations for teacher preparation for mathematical learning. We see the study as having value for research and practice by raising a new approach related to Ethno-STEAM and demonstrating the need for the development of theory to explain the relationships identified by this study. Key Words:

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the development process and results of the Construct 2 Android-based education math game on number pattern subjects to increase student's ICT literacy. This research employed the Research and Development method with a 4-D development model. The development model consisted of 4 stages: the Define stage, the Design stage, the Development stage, and the dissemination stage. Also, the researchers developed the Android-based application based on ICT literacy indicators. The application must be valid, practical, and effective. The results showed a correlation coefficient value of 0.87 and included in the valid category with very high interpretation. The level of practicality of the developed product was 83.96% based on a users' responses questionnaire. The effectiveness was determined based on the percentage of students' learning outcomes which was 83.33%. The increase in students' ICT literacy was determined based on the ICT literacy questionnaire and learning outcome tests' average N-Gain score. The average N-Gain value obtained was 0.75, with an average value for the ICT literacy questionnaire of 0.89 and the average value for the learning outcome test of 0.61. Based on these three criteria, it can be concluded that the Construct 2 android-based educational math game on the number pattern material can improve students' ICT literacy.

Abstract

Many researchers have conducted previous meta-analysis studies regarding problem-based learning (PBL) to enhance problem-solving skills. However, their research does not focus on mathematical problem-solving skills (MPSS). This study aims to summarize, estimate, and evaluate PBL implementation's effect in enhancing the MPSS of Indonesian junior high school (JHS) students and investigate the study characteristics that affect the heterogeneous effect size data. Twenty-nine relevant primary studies published in national and international journals and proceedings during 2011 – 2020 were analyzed using the systematic review and meta-analysis. The analysis tool used the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software by selecting the formula of Hedge to determine its effect size. The result showed that the overall PBL implementation had a medium positive effect (g = 0,743; p less than 0,05), significantly enhancing the MPSS of Indonesian JHS students based on the random effect model. Also, the characteristics of sample size, research area, sampling technique, and publication year did not affect the heterogeneous effect size data. These results suggest that Indonesian JHS mathematics teachers should select PBL as one of the best solutions in implementing mathematics learning in the classroom to enhance students' MPSS.

Abstract

This article aims to find out how the ability to understand concepts and solve mathematical problems of junior high school students in Bandar Lampung after being treated using Multy Reprecentacy Discourse learning (DMR) assisted by dragonbox games for one semester of learning. Data analysis was based on an assessment of 64 students (experimental class n = 32 and control class n = 32) using the One-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) analysis technique. The results showed that significantly learning during the Covid-19 pandemic using the DMR model assisted by mathematics games had a better effect on students' understanding of concepts and solving mathematical problems partially or simultaneously.
