Abstract

Nowadays, translation becomes more essential in people’s everyday communication. This is due to people’s mobility in and out from one country into another. This also happens in Indonesia where people from all over the world come to Indonesia not only for travelling but also for other purposes such as investing, working, studying as well as retiring. Thus, the translations of Law in Indonesian Immigration should be taken into account so that the regulation is easily understood and read by those people. The selected data taken from two translation versions of Undang-UndangNomor 6 Tahun 2011 tentangKeimigrasianwere analyzed based on the theory of textual equivalence proposed by Allan (1986), supported by Newmark’s Componential Analysis Theory (1988). The result showed that some translations of the Indonesian Immigration Terms into English in both versions are commonly used in the Immigration section such as sponsor, permanent resident permit, Immigration Clearance etc. Some are not common in daily use such as guarantor, temporary resident permit, etc. The translation equivalents were found using componential analysis. However, in some cases, componential analysis theory is insufficient to describe the words in both versions. Therefore, meaning postulate is also applied

Abstract

Setiap politisi termasuk Tan Malaka memiliki kata kunci.

Abstract

The translation of English pronouns into Balinese may have different linguistic variations. I-you (tu-vous) dalam Braun 1988:7 may have their translations into icang-cai ‘ordinary’, tiang-ragane ‘middle’, titiang-iratu ‘humble-refined’. He/She may have their translations into ia ‘ordinary’, dane ‘middle’, ipun ‘humble’, ida ‘refined’. Attitude in the Appraisal Theory, as a part of Linguistic Functional Systemic, used to investigate the social stratification of the tenors and that may determine the forms of the linguistic variants of the pronouns. The difference of the linguistic variants are due to (1) Textual meanings which are due to the two different linguistic systems and cultures and (2) Contextual meanings which are due to the translator’s preference.

Abstract

Abstract From the perspective of social semiotics, language has two dimensions: expression and content. The expression will not have a content (meaning) when it is not in used (Halliday dan Hasan, 1985: 17). Language function which is expressed in the legends belonged to the Dayak Ngaju community (LDN) in Central Kalimantan is suitable to the theory of language function proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 17) rather than other theories. The language function within LDN consists of informative function, interactive, and imaginative.

Abstract

This study explores the correlation of learners’ attitude towards their English teachers and their motivation and achievement in English class. Two questionnaires on attitude and motivation used in this study were adapted from the Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) developed by Gardner (1985). These questionnaires were then developed using web-based survey and distributed online to 82 Indonesian students. The quantification of data shows that attitude and motivation are moderately correlated at a value of r = 0.569, p < 0.01, whilst the correlation value between motivation and students’ final score is at r = 0.30, p

Abstract

ABSTRACT There are two kinds of reference found in this writing based on the reference direction such as anaphoric and cataphoric reference. Anaphoric reference refers to information that has been mentioned immediately before (the left side), meanwhile cataphoric reference refers to the information that comes in the following text (the right side). Both anaphoric and cataphoric reference can be in form of personal pronoun and demonstrative pronoun. Personal pronouns can be in form of enclitic –nya and third person pronoun; meanwhile demonstrative pronouns are the words that determine something, such as this or that. The theory used in this writing is cohesion theory, which is proposed by M.A.K. Halliday, and Ruqaiya Hasan in their book entitled Cohesion in English (1976). Cohesion is the device to show the cohesiveness within the text or paragraph, meanwhile the paragraph is above the sentence level (Riana, 1985:71). Cohesion occurs when the interpretation of the text depends on the interpretation of other elements in the same text.
