The linguistic journal as a vehicle for the development of the linguistic horizon is published by the Linguistics Master Program (S2) Linguistics and Doctoral Program of Udayana University Graduate Program. The publication of this journal in 1994, led by the Chairman and Secretary of Master Program (S2) and S3 Postgraduate Program of Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Bawa and Prof. Dr. Aron Meko Mbete. In its development, there are various changes in linguistic journals, such as cover colors, style selingkung, and the number of articles published.

Abstract--This paper discusses about reiteration used by the participants of reading news contest conducted in Warmadewa University. Reiteration is part of lexical cohesion. The lexical cohesion has two functions; first to link between word and word, phrase and phrase within a text and second to indicate co-occurrence of words in which their meaning related in the same environment. The reiteration refers to first function of lexical cohesion. The theories applied to support this paper are the theory of cohesion from a book entitled Introducing Discourse Analysis by Nunan (1993) and a book entitled Cohesion in English by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The data of this paper taken from six texts made by the participants of the contest. The text contains with the participants’ perspectives on Indonesian culture in the globalization era. The data was analyzed by using qualitative method. Based on the result of the analysis, it is found that reiteration used in the text by the participants of reading news contest consists of repetition, synonym/nears synonym, superordinate and general word. Abstract--This research aims at finding out the types of figurative language and to analyze the meaning of the figurative language conveyed in Post Malone’s songs in the album entitled Hollywood’s Bleeding. The method used in collecting data is the descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed based on the theory types of figurative language from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963), Knickerbocker and Reninger. Theory proposed by Leech (1981) was applied to find out the meaning. The result shows that there are eight types of figurative language used in Post Malone’s songs.They are simile (4 items or 13.8%), personification (2 items or 6.9%), metaphor (3 items or 10.3%), hyperbole (8 items or 27.6%), synecdoche (2 items or 6.9%), metonymy (2 items or 6.9%), irony (2 items or 6.9%) and paradox (6 items or 20.7%). There were 29 sentences identified using those eight types of figurative languages states above. The dominant types of figurative language is hyperbole because the songwriter is put more exageration to the lyrics to make them sounds beautiful. Abstract--This article aimed to specify the kinds of illocutionary acts and defined the existence of illocutionary acts and their meaning in a speech to discover the outcomes of the maximum dominant kinds of illocutionary acts in President Joe Biden's speech. The research method used in completing this research becomes the descriptive qualitative method. In studying the data, the theory of Searle (1979) becomes used to determine the illocutionary act category of the speaker utterances. The tool used in collecting and analyzing the information was the speech video of President Joe Biden and the script acquired from the internet. The result of this research confirmed that there was 41 information and the researcher observed five types of the illocutionary act by using Searle’s theory in President Joe Biden’s speech which are assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative. The most dominant was assertive illocutionary act that implies stating, announcing, reporting, assertion, claiming, telling, informing, assuring, complaining, and concluding. Abstract--This research aims at finding out verbal and non-verbal signs and also explaining the meaning of those verbal and visual signs found in the posters of Korean pop idol. The data were taken from ten printed posters of Korean pop idol from the internet. This study used the theory of semiotic by Saussure (1983) to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs and theory meanings by Barthes (1968) to find out the meaning of verbal and visual signs in the posters of Korean pop idol. Descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data in this study. As the result, those ten posters of Korean pop idol show the verbal and visual signs that support the agencies to promote their idols. In the verbal and visual signs of the posters album and concert of Korean idol show most all of them conveys connotative meaning. In the non-verbal signs of the advertisements almost all of the posters of Korean idol used the member of the idol group as a model, It means the advertisements want to attract the people interest by using a the good visual of the idol. Abstract--This study aims to identify and analyze the types of positive emotion and the technique of translation applied to translate the positive emotion words found in the novel Red queen. The method of collecting data in this study was conducted through a documentary method. Furthermore, descriptive qualitative method was applied for analyzing the data. The theories of category of emotions concept and technique of translation were used to analyze the data. There are three types of positive emotion found in the novel. Moreover, only four out of eighteen techniques of translation applied in the novel including literal, amplification, transposition, and particularization. Abstract—The goal of this study is to determine the capability of Google Translate in term of translating cultural terms. This study is conducted to analyze the translation performed by one of the well-known machine translation, Google Translate. The data is collected from the translation of seven traditional Balinese folktales chosen in random via online, namely Manik Angkeran, Kebo Iwa, Lubdaka, Tampaksiring, Origin of Bali, Origin of Singaraja, and Pan Balang Tamak. The data of the study is the translation on cultural terms translated by Google Translate. The cultural terms are classified with Cultural Term Classification Theory by Newmark. The analysis is conducted by comparing the translatied text and the original text to identify the translation method utilized by Google Translate in translating cultural term into English. The Translation Method Theory and Classification by Newmark is used to identify the method of translation utilized by Google Translate. The methods then is used in order to determine the tendency of Google Translate in the translation toward cultural terms. This study focuses on two aspects: (1) the translation procedures are found in English into Indonesian novel entitled Looking for Alaska; and (2) the most dominant translation procedure found in the novels entitled Looking for Alaska. The data were taken from a novel entitled Looking for Alaska and its Indonesian translation with the same title. The data collection was done by documentation method, reading and taking notes. The data were analysed by descriptive and qualitative methods. The data analysis was presented by using the informal method to describe and explain the types and translation procedures. The results suggested that (1) borrowing procedure found in the novel is 31 data, calque procedure with 10 data, literal translation procedure with 8 data, transposition procedure with 4 data, equivalence with 6 data, adaptation with 1 data; (2) the most dominant procedure used by the translator was borrowing procedure.

There are many kinds of entertainment that are popular among the people, one of which is music. Songs use language as a medium to convey ideas or meanings to people who listen to them. Many singers in Indonesia are born and famous. One of them is Ussy Sulistiawaty. Ussy Sulistiawaty is a singer who often mixes English into the lyrics of some of her songs. A linguistic practice that mixes two or more languages and includes each other's terms of language elements, such as words, in other languages consistently is called code-mixing. Sulistiawaty. The object of this research is the lyrics of the song Ussy Sulistiawaty. Data and data sources in the form of written data are contained in a collection of song lyrics by Ussy Sulistyawaty. The data collection technique is the note-taking method. These results are the most common code mixing found in Ussy Sulistiawaty's song lyrics, namely (1) English clause code mixing and (2) the background of the emergence of English code mixing in Ussy Sulistiawaty's song lyrics because it is to attract attention, entertain listeners, and research on language that is often used by teenagers today.

This research was carried out based upon the habitual speaking attitude of Singaporeans in Singapore Colloquial English by adding discourse particles ah and lah. Data were gathered from Mothership YouTube channel in Mothership Hits the Streets section from January to December 2020. There were two objectives; finding out the types and explaining the assigned functions of discourse particles ah and lah of SCE found in Mothership videos. It was conducted through applying qualitative approach which observation, document analysis, discourse analysis, and descriptive-interpretative method were employed. Theories applied to this research were discourse particles classification by Wong (2004), roles of discourse particles by Low & Deterding (2003), and context of situation by Halliday & Hasan (1985). The results showed that four types of ah and three types of lah were used by Singaporeans as seen in the videos; perlocutionary ah, vocative ah, emphatic ah, ah as question marker, impositional lah, propositional lah, and persuasive lah. Two functions were identified; utterance-final marker and audible comma particle. On the frequencies, 38 occurrences of particle ah and 62 occurrences of particle lah.

This study aims to determine positive politeness strategies regarding Covid-19 in the Instagram caption @raffinagita1717. The source of the research data is the Instagram caption @raffinagita1717 which discusses Covid-19 by posting from January 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021. The methode of this research is the observation method with the note-taking technique. Listening is done by listening to the Instagram caption @raffinagita1717 which discusses Covid-19. After that, record the speech that has been chosen purposively. The results show that the Instagram caption @raffinagita1717 which discusses Covid-19 uses positive politeness strategies. The research found four forms of positive politeness strategies, namely paying more attention to the interlocutor, using group intimacy markers, involving speakers and interlocutors in activities, and being optimistic. The form of paying more attention to the interlocutor using the form of a directive speech strategy in the form of attention. As for the form of using group intimacy markers, the strategic form is the use of close calls (bun, kawan, dan teman-teman). The form involves the speaker and the interlocutor in the activity using a strategic form of using exclamation points to invite (ayo, yuk, dan mari). Next, be optimistic using the form of a hope marker strategy (semoga dan bismillah)
