Abstract

Saudi Arabia has long been known for its rigidity and conservative image, influenced by the close relationship between the kingdom and religious leaders. However, in the twenty-first century, Saudi Arabia began to embrace a more modern and moderate direction, moving away from conservatism and traditionalism. This shift is attributed to the Saudi reform policy, known as Saudi Vision 2030, which has had a significant impact on the country's social, cultural, and religious aspects. As a result, the authority of the Saudi kingdom has strengthened, while the authority of religious leaders has diminished. The research utilizes Plato's theory of authority and the modernization theory of Evsey Domar and Roy Harrod, combined with a socio-political approach, to analyze the policy authority of the Saudi kingdom and its impact on other sectors. The findings of the research indicate that the 21st century marked the beginning of socio-cultural changes in Saudi society, spearheaded by King Salman ibn Abdul Aziz and his son, Muhammad ibn Salman. The authority they wielded allowed for transformative ideas that aimed to modernize the conservative country. The introduction of Saudi Vision 2030 has brought about significant changes, including a shift towards modernist policies in social, political, and religious matters. Examples of these changes include increased freedoms for women, decreased reliance on oil in economic policies, the development of tourist attractions and entertainment venues, and greater equality in education and employment opportunities.

Abstract

This study examines the Betimbang tradition in South Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province, and its role in constructing religious moderation. The Betimbang is a communal tradition of mutual assistance during wedding receptions that has sparked debate between those who consider it excessive and contrary to Islamic teachings and others who maintain it as valuable local wisdom. This ethnographic study employed participant observation, in-depth interviews with community members and local religious leaders, and literature review to analyze the tradition's implementation and its relationship to religious moderation. The findings reveal that the Betimbang tradition functions as a mechanism for applying Islamic values of mutual assistance (ta'āwun) and social solidarity within extended family networks. Religious moderation is constructed through the integration of local cultural practices with Islamic teachings, facilitated by local religious leaders who provide contextual religious guidance during Betimbang ceremonies. This study contributes to the understanding of how local traditions can serve as vehicles for religious moderation by demonstrating the dynamic negotiation between cultural authenticity and religious orthodoxy in contemporary Indonesian Muslim communities.

Abstract

This study examines the role of power and religion in disciplining State Civil Servants (ASN) in the Palembang City Government, South Sumatra Indonesia, by taking the case of the Fajr Congregational Prayer Movement. The study is relevant due to the widespread indiscipline practices among Indonesian State Civil Servants and the use of religious approach to ASN’s disciplinary. Using qualitative research approach, data in this study obtained through in-depth interviews with government officials, ASN, and religious leaders; and content analysis of online news, Facebook, and Instagram posts. Foucault’s theory of disciplinary mechanisms was applied as analytical framework. Results of this study showed that the Government integrated religious doctrine and piety control as disciplinary instruments. This approach introduces a new dynamic in monitoring civil servant behaviour, differing from conventional bureaucratic practices. The research offers a new perspective on the relationship between power, religion, and bureaucracy while enriching discussions on variations in disciplinary mechanisms within the context of a majority Muslim country. The findings also suggest avenues for further research on the effectiveness of religious approaches in bureaucratic reform.

Abstract

Challenging conventional narratives of militarized Islamic expansion, this study investigates the instrumental role of Ṣūfī institutions in Sudan's peaceful and integrative Islamization. It establishes the significance of these institutions not merely as spiritual centers but as foundational frameworks for social cohesion and community resilience, particularly in response to contemporary crises. Focusing on the peaceful spread of Islam, the research examines how Ṣūfī orders utilized non-coercive mechanisms, including migration, trade, and spiritual mediation, to embed Islamic practices within syncretic societies. Employing institutional ethnography, the methodology reveals the socio-political functions of Ṣūfī centers such as the Masīd and Khalwa. Results demonstrate that these institutions transcended doctrinal roles, becoming engines of urbanization, de-tribalization, and grassroots governance. The research particularly emphasizes the educational, conflict-resolution, and humanitarian contributions of Ṣūfī networks, especially during crises like the April 15, 2023, war. Case studies highlight how spiritual leaders provided shelter, healthcare, and psychological support, reinforcing the Masīd as a moral and communal nucleus. This integrative role underscores the adaptability of Ṣūfīsm in responding to changing social dynamics, offering an enduring model of inclusive governance and interethnic solidarity. The findings contribute to academic discussions on religion and social order, illustrating how faith-based institutions can serve as resilient frameworks for community development in fragile states.

Abstract

Taiwan has emerged as a regional education hub, drawing international students particularly from Southeast and South Asiathrough proactive recruitment and policy tools, such as the New Southbound Policy. After graduation, many of these students face substantial barriers to integrating into Taiwan’s labor market. This study particularly targets barriers to employment that international graduates face after completing their degrees, focusing on the prevailing work governance structures and systemic frameworks. This qualitative study, based on 20 in-depth interviews and policy analysis. Findings reveal that entrenched bureaucratic hurdles, racialized labor hierarchies, and structural discrimination inhibit international graduates’ access to meaningful employment. The study calls for policy realignments that reframe international graduates as long-term socio-economic assets, not transient learners.

Abstract

Micro and Small Enterprises (MSMEs) as part of MSMEs have an important role in the national economy, including increasing economic growth, supporting economic stabilization, improving public welfare, alleviating poverty, and reducing unemployment rates. However, in its development, MSMEs face many challenges, including capital problems and low access to financial service institutions. Meanwhile, financial inclusion is one of the government's efforts to provide greater access to MSME actors so that they can use financial products and services. This study aims to determine whether financial inclusion and socio-demographic factors can affect MSME performance. The research methods used are multiple regression analysis, interaction test, and ANOVA tests. The study results indicate that financial inclusion significantly positively impacts Micro and Small business Performance in the DKI Jakarta area. This study also shows that socio-demographic factors, especially gender, business age, and generation of MSME actors, significantly influence MSME performance in the DKI Jakarta area. On the other hand, this study provides information that the perception of the performance of MSESs using conventional financial service institutions has a higher value than that of MSESs using sharia financial service institutions. Meanwhile, the lowest perception of MSES performance is held by MSES actors who do not use financial service institutions.

Abstract

The rationality of Nyadran as a cultural and philosophical Nusantara phenomenon needs to be studied, including Nyadran at Kemloko. The research aims to explain the Nyadran tradition, history, and the rationality of society. The data was collected by observation, interviews, literature review. We conducted observations of Nyadran practitioners in Kemloko hamlet, Temanggung, Central Java, and carried out in-depth interviews using purposive sampling based on key figures involved in the implementation of Nyadran in Kemloko. The data were examined through the lens of cultural rationality, which combines cultural and rational choice perspectives to explain behavior in political and social contexts. The results of the study, first, Nyadran in Kemloko was carried out in the months of Ruwah and Rajab, the month before Ramadan, coinciding with Friday. Kenduri Nyadran is performed at home or tomb and its implementation develops according to community conditions. Second, Nyadran has existed since the pre-Majapahit era and has grown to this day. Third, the implementation of Nyadran is based on traditional, affective, instrumental rationality and value rationality. Nyadran is an act of following the traditions of parents and ancestors. Affectionately, Nyadran is a proof of respect, obedience and devotion, as well as self-melting in society. Nyadran instrumentally becomes a means of showing devotion, a means of praying, a means of socializing, and a means of entertainment. The values contained in Nyadran are considered not to conflict with religious values and goodness in local culture.
Between Coercion and Compassion: A Comparative Analysis of ‘Amr al-Maʻrūf Nahy ʻan al-Munkar in Qāḍī ʻAbd al-Jabbār’s Rationalism and Abū Ḥāmid al-Gazālī’s Sufi Ethics Akhmad Jazuli Afandi; Muhyidin Muhyidin

Abstract

This article explores the concept of ‘Amr al-Maʻrūf Nahy ʻan al-Munkar (enjoining righteousness and forbidding evil) in Islamic theology through a comparative analysis of two influential thinkers: Qāḍī ʻAbd al-Jabbār (Muʻtazilī rationalist) and Abū Ḥāmid al-Gazālī (Asyʻarī-Sufi scholar). Modern religious violence frequently arises from stringent interpretations of these teachings, highlighting the necessity to examine how classical scholars reconciled ethical imperatives with humanistic principles. The study analyzes primary texts using hermeneutic and comparative methods, including Qāḍī ʻAbd al-Jabbār’s Syarh al-Uṣūl al-Khamsah and Abū Ḥāmid al-Gazālī’s Iḥyā’ ʻUlūm al-Dīn, to illustrate differing approaches. While Qāḍī ʻAbd al-Jabbār focused on rational-legal criteria for intervention, Abū Ḥāmid al-Gazālī emphasized spiritual intention and social harmony. Key findings show (1) the Muʻtazilī prioritization of systemic justice and epistemic clarity versus the Sufi focus on moral self-reformation and gradualism; (2) the role of humanism (e.g., reducing harm, maintaining dignity) across both frameworks despite theological differences; and (3) their relevance to modern debates on religious authority and pluralism. The study concludes that these classical models offer nuanced alternatives to coercive enforcement of ‘Amr al-Maʻrūf Nahy ʻan al-Munkar, promoting a compassion-driven ethics adaptable to diverse socioreligious contexts. Therefore, this article is intended to introduce a novel conceptual framework by bridging Muʻtazilī rationalism and Sufi ethics in understanding the doctrine of ‘Amr al-Maʻrūf Nahy ʻan al-Munkar, integrating rational-legal principles with spiritual compassion to reinterpret this duty beyond a coercive paradigm. Furthermore, underscores the urgent need to safeguard human dignity and the common good within diverse, multicultural societies.

Abstract

This study examines the accounting practices of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) in Palembang during the Palembang Sultanate, which not only represented economic activities but also functioned as a tool of colonial power. Trade activities at that time involved relationships between regions, kingdoms, sultanates, and foreign countries. The VOC, as the representative of the Dutch, conducted accounting records in trade activities in Palembang. This study aims to reveal how VOC accounting practices became part of the economic and political domination strategy over the Palembang Sultanate. The study employs Social Construction Theory and Conventional Accounting Theory. The method used is qualitative with a heuristic approach to 18th-century VOC archives. Data was collected through document studies, archives, photographs, and manuscripts obtained from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia and private collections. The findings reveal that VOC accounting practices were not neutral activities but were used to control commodity flows, set prices, and negotiate local power. These practices reflect efforts to strengthen colonial hegemony through accounting instruments. The findings of this study confirm that VOC economic record-keeping during the Palembang Sultanate was an important part of colonial economic and political strategy. Additionally, this research contributes to colonial history studies by demonstrating that trade archives are not merely sources of economic data but are also rich in ideological and power-related meanings.

Abstract

This study examines the kerje sara urang prohibition within the Gayo community's Belah Hakim clan, a customary rule forbidding intra-clan marriage, utilizing a qualitative method with an empirical juridical approach. The research combines normative analysis with direct field observation in Belah Hakim in habited areas of Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues. Primary data were gathered through interviews, observation, and documentation, analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model and triangulated for validity. The study found that the Belah Hakim community enforces this prohibition due to beliefs in shared lineage impacting health, its role in maintaining social harmony, fear of ancestral curses, and a desire to uphold religious values. Violators face parak (exile for six-months) and traditional fines, with more severe sanctions like jeret naru (permanent exile) for specific cases. From an ‘urf perspective, this prohibition is categorized as al-’urf al-fāsid because it lacks explicit Islamic legal basis and can lead to harmful social consequences such as family disintegration, social exclusion, and infringement on individual rights, while also risking shirk through beliefs in ancestral curses. This research highlights the conflict between customary norms and Islamic justice, advocating for a contextual Islamic legal approach to align customary law with maqāṣid al-sharī'ah.
