Abstract

The use of innovative learning media is now an urgent need to address increasingly complex learning challenges, especially in strengthening students' understanding and interest in learning. This study aims to develop innovative learning media in the form of bilingual e-comics (Aceh–Indonesian) on tajwid material, specifically the rules of Noon sakinah or tanween in Min. The background of this study is based on the low effectiveness of tajwid learning due to the dominance of conventional methods, the lack of interactive media, and the language gap between the lesson material and the daily lives of students in Aceh. Through the 4D (define, design, develop, disseminate) Research and Development (R&D) approach, this research focuses on the stages of needs analysis and product design by involving Qur'an Hadith teachers from various Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (State Elementary Islamic School) in Aceh. The survey results show that all teachers recognize the importance of learning media and the majority are in dire need of innovative media such as bilingual e-comics. The design process was carried out by compiling tajwid material in a bilingual digital comic format, complete with contextual illustrations and narratives that are close to the local culture. Expert validation stated that this media product was feasible with minor revisions, and the teachers' responses were very positive in terms of ease of use and attractiveness in the classroom. Limited implementation at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 11 Banda Aceh showed a significant increase in student understanding and motivation. This study recommends the use of bilingual e-comics as a modern solution to overcome tajwid learning challenges, while also serving as an effort to preserve local culture through the integration of local languages in digital learning materials.

Abstract

The Acehnese people have been carrying out the religious practice of reciting the Qur’an at the gravesites for generations. This research aims at determining the practice of reciting the Qur’an at the gravesites, current practices, perspectives, shifting factors, and opinions of Islamic school’s scholars. This research employed observation, interviews, and documentation as its instruments. The gained data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the practice of reciting the Qur’an at gravesites is a ritual carried out by some people at the gravesites individually and in groups. People carry out the current practice of reciting the Qur’an at gravesites starting from three days, seven days, and ten days and nights. They also pay wages to members who recite the Qur’an at the gravesites. Additionally, women continue reciting the Qur’an during Friday prayers to ensure uninterrupted reciting. The perspectives of ordinary people are that reciting the Qur’an at the gravesites symbolizes a form of affection for the deceased's family. Meanwhile, academicians argue that reciting the Qur’an at gravesites is a social phenomenon to continue pre-existing traditions and to maintain sacred values in every religious ritual. Modernists argue that reciting the Qur’an at the gravesites does not need to be a tradition because apart from having no strong basis, the sins of someone who has died are not borne by other people. Meanwhile, scholars argue that reciting the Qur’an at gravesites is recommended in Islamic teachings to pray for the deceased, even if other people recite it. The shifting factors happened because the influence of local culture and foreign culture that people follow the developments of times besides increasing income for people who are invited to recite the Qur’an. Meanwhile, the Imāms of the school of thought argue according to the postulates that reciting the Qur’an at a gravesites is makruh and something that is sunnah, however, if it is done intending to send prayers to the deceased, it is then recommended because it can ease the torment in the graves and get rewards for both those who recite and those who listen to the reciting of the Qur’anic verses.

Abstract

This research is in the field of religious, social, and cultural studies, focusing on marine tourism governance from the perspective of governmentality and the interaction between power, spirituality, and sustainability. Papuma Beach in Jember Regency was chosen as the study location because it illustrates the complexity of coastal tourism management, which is fraught with economic interests and formal power, but on the other hand has a strong spiritual value system in the local community. This research aims to identify the forms of power at work in tourism management and understand how religion plays a role in the production of meaning around sustainability and resistance to technocratic development models. The methods used are a critical qualitative approach with participatory observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentary studies. The results show that the dominance of the state and market in the management of Papuma tourism creates cultural dislocation and marginalization of local communities. However, the community has developed various forms of symbolic resistance and alternative practices based on religious values and local wisdom. This study contributes to the development of governmentality theory in a local context and expands the discourse on sustainability by integrating maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah and eco-theology as analytical frameworks. In conclusion, equitable tourism development can only be achieved through participatory governance rooted in community values. These findings are important as a basis for formulating contextual, fair, and locally rooted sustainable tourism policies.

Abstract

The Petik Laut tradition in Grajagan Village, Banyuwangi, Indonesia, represents a significant maritime cultural practice that reflects the spiritual connection coastal communities have with the sea. This tradition has been observed since 1977, yet it now confronts challenges posed by modernization and globalization. While scholarly discourse around maritime traditions has increased, there remains a lack of systematic research examining the social reproduction mechanisms that contribute to their continuity. This study seeks to investigate how the meanings and functions of Petik Laut are expressed in the social and spiritual lives of the community. It explores how these communities negotiate traditional values in the face of modern influences and examines the extent to which Petik Laut serves as a mechanism for cultural resilience amid globalization. Utilizing Pierre Bourdieu's social practice theory, this qualitative ethnographic study analyzes the interactions among habitus, capital, and field. Research was conducted in Grajagan Village, Banyuwangi, from September to December, 2024. Data collection involved interviews with ten informants, including traditional leaders, fishermen, village officials, and community members, as well as participant observation and documentation studies. Thematic analysis revealed patterns associated with habitus formation, capital mobilization, and negotiations within the field. The findings indicate that Petik Laut serves as a complex social reproduction mechanism, wherein spiritual habitus interacts with various forms of capital: cultural, economic, social, and symbolic. Specifically, the tradition functions as a spiritual ritual embodying cosmological beliefs, a mechanism for social solidarity through gotong royong (communal cooperation), a source of cultural capital that enhances tourism appeal, and a symbolic arena for negotiating authority and identity. The tradition persists through strategic adaptation, successfully maintaining its spiritual core while embracing digital documentation and engaging younger generations. This study underscores how coastal communities exercise cultural agency within structural constraints, preserving their collective identity through creative adaptation. The findings contribute to the decolonization of social theory and inform culturally sensitive development policies that acknowledge traditional practices as essential foundations for sustainable coastal management.

Abstract

Families in the sandwich-generation shoulder responsibilities for children and elderly parents, creating significant financial strain. This study examines how demographic characteristics and financial literacy, encompassing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour, affect emergency fund ownership among sixty sandwich-generation households in Bogor Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected through structured interviews and supported by several in-depth interviews to capture socio-cultural context. Descriptive statistics, Spearman/Kendal tau-b correlation, and logistic regression were employed in the analysis. The findings indicate that most respondents demonstrated low financial knowledge and poor financial behaviour, though their financial attitudes were moderately positive. More than half of the families lacked adequate emergency savings, with higher income significantly improving the likelihood of ownership, while a greater number of children reduced it. Importantly, financial knowledge emerged as a positive and significant predictor of emergency fund ownership. Beyond economic implications, the results highlight the socio-religious dimension of family resilience. In Islamic tradition, safeguarding wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl) and fulfilling intergenerational obligations reflect both moral duty and social solidarity. Thus, strengthening financial literacy not only enhances economic security but also aligns with Islamic values of prudence, responsibility, and care for family members. Integrating these insights contributes to a deeper socio-cultural understanding of resilience within Muslim families.

Abstract

This article explores the interplay between new media, lifestyle aspirations, and financial behavior among Indonesian Muslim millennials in relation to capital market investments. Anchored in Rational Choice Theory (RCT), the study investigates how economic motivations, religious considerations, and social influences shape investment decisions. Drawing on qualitative data collected through in-depth interviews with more than 20 millennial Muslims from Yogyakarta and East Java, the study reveals a dynamic shift in perception—from viewing investment as a prestigious lifestyle marker to embracing it as a rational strategy for long-term financial security. Social media and smartphone technology emerge as key facilitators of financial literacy and access, enabling individuals to engage with the capital market despite limited formal financial education. Moreover, the research highlights how religious legitimation, particularly the fatwa from Indonesia’s National Sharia Council (DSN MUI), contributes to the perceived permissibility of stock market participation among observant Muslims. However, this perception is not universally acknowledged, indicating a nuanced negotiation between religious norms and market behavior. The findings suggest that capital market participation among Muslim millennials is not solely driven by profit-seeking behavior but also deeply influenced by peer dynamics, lifestyle aspirations, and broader socio-religious frameworks. This study contributes to a growing body of literature on Islamic financial practices, digital religiosity, and the socio-cultural dimensions of economic life in Muslim-majority societies.

Abstract

This study examines the reliability of ChatGPT in translating Arabic–Indonesian religious texts, addressing the concern that AI often struggles with culturally embedded, legal, and theological expressions as highlighted in recent translation studies. The issue is significant because Qur’anic and hadith texts carry normative meanings whose alterations may lead to doctrinal misinterpretation. Data were collected from ten Qur’anic legal verses and ten hadiths from al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah, translated by ChatGPT using a standardized prompt. The translations were evaluated through Nababan et al.’s accuracy–acceptability–readability model by expert reviewers and general readers. Findings show that ChatGPT performs well in accuracy and readability but displays limitations in rendering legal terminology, cultural nuance, and doctrinally sensitive expressions. This research contributes empirical evidence on the strengths and risks of AI-assisted translation for Islamic texts and underscores the necessity of expert post-editing to ensure theological precision and culturally appropriate interpretation.

Abstract

This article discusses the semiotic meaning in the song Kalam Eineh by Sherine Abdel Wahab and its relationship to the phenomenon of using abaya on the TikTok platform as part of popular cultural representation. This research is in the realm of cultural and semiotic studies, with the aim of revealing how popular music and traditional fashion play a role in shaping social and ideological meanings in the digital space. This topic was chosen because the abaya trend on TikTok reflects the negotiation between tradition, modernity, and religious identity, which until now has rarely been studied in depth. The method used is descriptive qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which emphasizes three layers of meaning, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. To strengthen the validity of the analysis, this study also uses theoretical triangulation through Appadurai's view of mediascapes, Giddens on agency and structure, and Hall on representation and negotiation of meaning. The results of the study show that at the level of denotation, songs represent romantic expressions, while abaya serves as clothing; at the level of connotation, both feature symbols of lifestyle, identity, and piety. Meanwhile, at the mythical level, the abaya has undergone a transformation into a popular culture icon that naturalizes the ideology of religiosity, modernity, and aesthetics in digital culture. This research contributes to the study of popular culture and media by emphasizing the relevance of Barthes' semiotic theory in reading contemporary cultural texts in the era of social media.

Abstract

This article examines the contestation of horeg sound meaning through Ernesto Laclau's post-structuralist discourse analysis approach. This study places the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Fatwa of East Java Number 1 of 2025 concerning the use of horeg sound as a nodal point in discourse analysis. This research is conceptually-empirically based with qualitative methods that combine document studies and digital observations of the fatwa text, media coverage, and social media. Data analysis is conducted through three dimensions of post-structuralist discourse analysis, namely; articulation, hegemony, and repositioning of meaning by exploring the relations of equivalence and differentiation between symbols. This analysis positions the fatwa prohibiting horeg sound not to be interpreted simply as a matter of religious law, but this phenomenon reflects the discursive struggle between religious authorities and popular culture. The fatwa functions as an instrument of hegemony of meaning, in which religious authorities attempt to assert moral dominance by categorizing horeg sound as a negative practice articulated with disturbance and haram. This hegemonic effort sparked social resistance, particularly from young people who resorted to symbolic repositioning through the term "carnival sound" as a form of symbolic resistance to religious authority. The research results show that the fatwa actually destabilized meaning and opened up new spaces for contestation within the field of discursivity. This confirms that religious discourse is contingent, fragile, and always open to negotiation of meaning and social resistance.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of pesantren tradition, managerial innovation, and external collaboration as a model for strengthening santri leadership capacity in Indonesia. Pesantren, as traditional Islamic educational institutions, play a central role in shaping future leaders grounded in religious values. However, the challenges of modernization, globalization, and digital transformation require pesantren to adapt without losing their authenticity. The purpose of this research is to analyze how leadership education in pesantren can develop through the synergy of traditional values, technological innovation, and strategic partnerships. The research employed a qualitative approach through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with pesantren leaders, santri, and external stakeholders. The findings reveal that the integration of tradition, digital managerial innovation, and external collaboration are strategic factors in strengthening santri leadership capacity within pesantren. Tradition continues to serve as a moral and spiritual foundation instilling honesty, responsibility, and the exemplary role of the kiai. Meanwhile, technology-based managerial innovation brings transformative change through digital administration, learning management systems, and online communication applications that foster participatory and adaptive leadership. Furthermore, collaboration with government, NGOs, and the private sector enriches santri leadership experiences through practical training beyond the religious sphere.
