Abstract

The increasing prevalence of online game addiction among adolescents has become a serious concern due to its negative impact on students’ academic balance and mental health. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of information services in improving students’ understanding of the risks associated with online gaming at SMA Negeri 1 Kejuruan Muda, Aceh Tamiang. A quantitative experimental approach was employed using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of 144 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and systematic observations. The questionnaire was administered in three stages: an initial survey to identify students’ involvement in online gaming, a pretest to assess their baseline understanding of online gaming risks, and a posttest to measure changes in understanding following the implementation of the information service. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ understanding of the dangers of online gaming after receiving the information service. Comparisons between pretest and posttest scores demonstrated increased awareness of the negative consequences of online gaming, including addiction, health problems, declining academic performance, and changes in social behavior. Observational findings further revealed higher student engagement and improved self-regulation in managing gaming time. These findings confirm that information services are an effective strategy for enhancing students’ understanding of online game hazards and should be integrated into school guidance and counseling programs.

Abstract

Parents play a crucial role in shaping a child’s self-concept, although socio-demographic factors may affect awareness of this responsibility. A total of 326 parents (93 fathers and 233 mothers), aged between 19 and 82 years, from various districts in Aceh participated in the study. They completed the Parental Awareness Scale of Self-Concept Promotion (PAS-SCP), a 42-item self-report instrument developed by the authors. The scale assesses three dimensions of parental awareness in promoting children’s positive self-concept: cognitive, affective, and behavioural. Content validity was confirmed through expert review, and reliability testing showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = .79–.86). Data were analysed using bivariate correlations (point-biserial and Spearman’s rho) and mean comparisons with effect sizes. Results indicated that parental education (r = .56, p < .01, large effect) and occupational field (r = .41, p < .01, moderate effect) were positively correlated with awareness. Conversely, age showed a negative correlation (r = –.29, p < .05, small-to-moderate effect). Gender differences were minimal (d = 0.05). These findings emphasise the importance of parental education and occupational background in fostering self-concept awareness. The results offer practical guidance for school counsellors and policymakers to enhance family-based interventions.

Abstract

Pregnancy can present significant risks, particularly during the childbirth process, which often induces fear and anxiety in pregnant women. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of group counseling using the Positive Self-Talk technique in reducing anxiety among pregnant women. A true experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed, with 20 participants divided into two groups: 10 pregnant women in the experimental group and 10 in the control group. Anxiety data were collected using the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS), adapted to measure anxiety in pregnant women. Pre-test and post-test results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test via SPSS 20. The findings revealed a significant reduction in anxiety within the experimental group (Asymp. Sig. = 0.037), with the average anxiety score decreasing from 84.5 at pre-test to 50.8 at post-test, while the control group exhibited an increase in the average anxiety score from 85.7 to 91.4 (Asymp. Sig. = 0.0628). These results suggest that group counseling with the Positive Self-Talk technique is effective in reducing anxiety among pregnant women. This study provides valuable insights into psychological interventions aimed at alleviating anxiety in pregnant women, particularly in preparation for childbirth.
