Abstract

This study aims to analyze the beginning reading difficulties experienced by first-grade students at SD Negeri 5 Bhuana Giri and to identify the factors influencing students’ reading abilities. The study employed a descriptive method using a mixed methods approach that combined qualitative and quantitative data. The research subjects consisted of 9 first-grade students. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and beginning reading tests covering letter recognition, letter sounds, syllables, words, and comprehension of meaning. The data were analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, as well as quantitative analysis in the form of percentages and mean scores. The results showed that the students’ beginning reading ability was still categorized as low, with an average score of 62. A total of 56% of students had not yet achieved learning mastery. The most dominant difficulties experienced by students were combining syllables and understanding meanings, each with a percentage of 67%. In addition, students also experienced difficulties in recognizing letters, distinguishing letter sounds, and reading words. The factors causing beginning reading difficulties were influenced by internal factors, such as low learning motivation, cognitive ability, and students’ reading interest, as well as external factors, including less varied teaching methods, limited family support, and a lack of literacy-rich environments. This study is expected to serve as a reference for teachers and schools in designing more effective and innovative reading instruction strategies. Efforts to improve beginning reading skills need to be carried out continuously through collaboration among teachers, schools, and parents.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and diagnose the multi-dimensional learning difficulties encountered by fifth-grade students at SDN 2 Subagan during floor gymnastics rolling lessons. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing structured participatory observation sheets, semi-structured in-depth interview guides with students and the physical education teacher, and extensive learning outcome documentation as primary research instruments. Data analysis followed the interactive model consisting of data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The research subjects consisted of 12 fifth-grade students and 1 physical education teacher. The findings demonstrated that 83.3% of the participants (10 out of 12 students) failed to fulfill the established Minimum Learning Mastery Criteria (KKTP), with an overall class average score of 51.7. Key technical deficiencies involved inaccurate hand positioning (75–83%) and improper head execution, while severe psychological barriers included rolling anxiety (67–75%) and low self-confidence. Causal factors were distributed across psychological (32%), technical-motor (28%), pedagogical (25%), and physical (15%) dimensions. In conclusion, the student learning difficulties are systemic and interconnected rather than isolated physical limitations. Comprehensive pedagogical interventions integrating step-by-step scaffolding, visual media, and affective support are highly recommended to establish an optimal and safe learning environment.

Abstract

Running speed is a crucial physical condition component in athletic learning at elementary schools; however, systematic training methods for this level remain limited. This study aims to determine the effect and difference between deer run (lari kijang) and hopping exercises on improving the 80-meter running speed of fifth-grade male students. A quantitative approach with a two-group pretest-posttest experimental design was employed. A total of 98 male students were selected using proportional sampling from Cluster III, Karangasem District, divided into Experimental Group I (deer run exercise, n=49) and Experimental Group II (hopping exercise, n=49). The intervention was conducted for 6 weeks at a frequency of 4 sessions per week using a 40-meter, 4-repetition, 3-set protocol. Results showed deer run training produced a mean improvement of 2.44 seconds (pretest: 13.91s; posttest: 11.47s), while hopping produced 1.50 seconds improvement (pretest: 13.97s; posttest: 12.47s). Both paired t-tests and independent t-tests confirmed statistically significant effects and differences (p<0.05). In conclusion, deer run exercise is more effective than hopping in improving 80-meter running speed among elementary school students.

Abstract

Science literacy is an essential competence for elementary students because it enables them to explain phenomena, use evidence, and make informed decisions in everyday contexts. PISA 2022 reported that Indonesian students obtained a mean science score of 383, below the OECD average of 485. National Assessment data also show that the proportion of Indonesian students reaching the minimum reading-literacy competency increased from 59.49% in 2022 to 70.03% in 2024, although the improvement was not evenly distributed across regions. Against this background, the present study explores how local wisdom-based IPAS (Natural and Social Sciences) learning supports students’ science literacy at SD Negeri 5 Padangkerta. The study employs a descriptive qualitative design using observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The data sources comprise an IPAS teacher and selected Grade IV–V students; the exact number of student informants should be inserted from the field record before submission: [INSERT VERIFIED NUMBER OF STUDENT INFORMANTS]. The data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification, supported by thematic coding and triangulation. The findings indicate that local wisdom-based learning, particularly through the Subak irrigation system, school gardens, medicinal plants, and the surrounding village environment, encourages student participation and supports their ability to explain familiar scientific phenomena. However, students’ ability to identify evidence and interpret scientific data remains less developed. The novelty of this study lies in its examination of science-literacy development through the actual integration of Balinese local wisdom into IPAS learning in a rural elementary-school context. Practically, the findings suggest that teachers can use the local environment as a learning laboratory while developing structured inquiry and data-interpretation activities.
