Abstract

The concept of “love” is complex and culturally variable, posing challenges for cross-linguistic understanding and translation. This study aims to conduct a semantic analysis of the concept of “love” in Indonesian (cinta) compared to English, to reveal both universal and culture-specific meanings. Using a qualitative approach, the research integrates lexical semantics, collocational analysis, and conceptual metaphor theory to examine dictionary definitions, corpus data, and metaphorical expressions in both languages. The findings show that while both languages share a core meaning of deep affection, Indonesian cinta has a broader semantic scope including spiritual and patriotic dimensions, reflecting Indonesia’s collectivist values. English love predominantly denotes individualistic romantic feelings. Metaphorical analysis further highlights distinct cultural conceptualizations: English metaphors emphasize agency and conflict, whereas Indonesian metaphors focus on growth and unity.

Abstract

Semantic ambiguity remains a critical challenge in both linguistic theory and practical applications, especially in domains demanding high interpretive precision such as legal discourse. This study aims to examine the nature, sources, and implications of semantic ambiguity by integrating perspectives from cognitive linguistics, legal hermeneutics, and cross-cultural pragmatics. Employing a qualitative analytical method, data were drawn from legal case studies, discourse analysis, and comparative linguistic literature. The findings reveal that ambiguity often arises from polysemy, syntactic complexity, cultural frameworks, and pragmatic inference. In legal contexts, such ambiguity can significantly influence judicial outcomes and the interpretation of statutes. The study suggests that applying systematic semantic analysis and interdisciplinary interpretive models can minimize misinterpretation and promote fairness in communication. These results contribute to advancing theoretical insights in meaning studies while offering practical strategies for mitigating ambiguity in critical decision-making contexts.

Abstract

This research investigates how effective the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method is at improving students’ understanding of reading through narrative texts in SMP GKPS 13 Sibarou. The study was motivated by the finding that numerous eighth-grade students struggled with grasping text organization and main concepts in their reading materials. To tackle this challenge, the teacher adopted PBL techniques by offering students real-world problems related to narrative text analysis, which they addressed collectively through reading aloud, discussions, and presentations. The research included 14 students who were paired up, and it utilized worksheets, observation forms, reading comprehension assessments, and documentation as tools. Activities were crafted to encourage students to recognize the organization of narrative texts, apply past tense verbs, and derive meaning through guided inquiry. The reading aloud method aided learners in enhancing their pronunciation, fluency, and understanding of the texts. The findings indicated a significant improvement in students' narrative text comprehension, along with heightened confidence, involvement, and critical thinking skills. The incorporation of PBL encouraged teamwork and a more profound engagement with the content. This method is advantageous for English educators looking to develop meaningful, student-focused learning experiences.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of reference and referent in everyday English communication through an empirical qualitative approach grounded in descriptive discourse analysis. The research examines naturally occurring spoken and written interactions containing personal, demonstrative, and definite reference forms to understand how referential expressions function within context-dependent communication. The findings reveal that personal reference predominantly operates through pronouns that enhance discourse efficiency by minimizing lexical repetition while maintaining referential continuity. Demonstrative reference is shown to depend heavily on shared contextual knowledge, situational cues, and interactional alignment between interlocutors, particularly in digitally mediated communication where contextual compression frequently increases interpretive ambiguity. Definite reference further demonstrates that successful communication relies on mutual cognitive accessibility and collaborative negotiation of meaning rather than solely grammatical structure. The study also identifies conversational repair and contextual inference as essential mechanisms for resolving referential ambiguity during interaction. These findings contribute to semantics and pragmatics by emphasizing that reference constitutes a dynamic interactional process shaped by discourse accessibility, common ground, and communicative cooperation in contemporary English communication environments.

Abstract

This study investigates polysemy in Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” using a non-empirical qualitative design grounded in lexical semantics. The research aims to identify polysemous lexical items, examine their contextual meanings, and analyze their semantic functions in shaping lyrical interpretation. Data were obtained from the official song lyrics and analyzed through descriptive textual analysis involving lexical identification, contextual classification, and semantic interpretation. The findings reveal that numerous lexical items such as “shape,” “heart,” “fall,” and “touch” exhibit systematic meaning extensions between literal and metaphorical domains. Context plays a crucial role in determining meaning selection, allowing lexical ambiguity to function as a controlled interpretive mechanism. The study further shows that polysemy contributes to aesthetic structuring, emotional intensification, and communicative efficiency within the lyrics. These functions demonstrate that lexical meaning in song discourse is dynamically constructed rather than fixed. Overall, polysemy operates as a central semantic strategy that enhances both interpretive depth and artistic expression in contemporary popular music.

Abstract

This study examines the semantic construction of denotative and connotative meanings in the song lyrics of “Let Her Go” by Passenger through a non-empirical qualitative design grounded in Geoffrey Leech’s theory of meaning. The analysis focuses on how literal lexical references and implied emotional significations interact to produce layered interpretations within lyrical discourse. Data were obtained from the complete song lyrics and analyzed through close reading, semantic categorization, and contextual interpretation. The findings reveal that denotative meanings function as structural anchors that provide literal clarity, while connotative meanings dominate the interpretive dimension by expressing emotional experiences such as regret, loneliness, love, and realization. The study further identifies that repetition, symbolism, metaphor, and binary oppositions such as light and darkness significantly contribute to semantic depth and thematic coherence. Interaction between denotative and connotative layers forms a unified interpretive system that enables emotional resonance and narrative progression. The research concludes that semantic analysis is essential in revealing the complex relationship between literal and emotional meanings in song lyrics.
