Abstract

ABSTRACT Formaldehyde in salted fish processing is used to extend the shelf life of salted fish, potentially causing harmful effects on health. Before processing, such as soaking using pineapple peels can be done to reduce formaldehyde levels so that it is not harmful to health. The purpose of the study was to determine the decrease in formaldehyde levels in salted fish before and after soaking using a pineapple peel solution. This research is a pre-experimental study with a group Pretest and Posttest Design. The object of research is salted fish soaked in pineapple peel solution concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% with 4 replications. Soaking time is done for 60 minutes. The method of checking formaldehyde levels using the spectrophotometer method. The data that has been obtained is then analyzed using a paired t-test. The results of the examination of formaldehyde levels of salted fish before soaking amounted to 13.30 mg/kg. In contrast, after soaking the pineapple peel solution concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% respectively amounted to 6.58 mg/kg, 4.16 mg/kg, 0.15 mg/kg, and 0.11 mg/kg, and tap water of 8.14 mg/kg. The Paired t-test obtained the P < α (0.05), meaning there is a significant difference in decline. The highest formaldehyde content reduction of 99.14% occurred in the treatment of soaking in pineapple peel solution with a concentration of 80% with a soaking time of 60 minutes. There is a significant difference between formaldehyde levels in salted fish before and after soaking using a pineapple peel solution. The use of pineapple peel solution can be an alternative effort in reducing formaldehyde levels in salted fish before processing for consumption and using other fruit peels with different concentration variations and different soaking times in salted fish.

Abstract

Fish smoking activities generate substantial amounts of smoke from incomplete combustion, exposing workers to various air pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO), which may lead to adverse respiratory health effects. Prolonged inhalation of CO can result in the formation of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), reducing oxygen transport in the blood and potentially causing subjective health complaints such as cough, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. In Penatarsewu Village, Sidoarjo, a major center of traditional fish smoking, a high prevalence of respiratory complaints among workers has been reported, yet evidence regarding the role of COHb in these complaints remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the effect of carboxyhemoglobin levels on subjective complaints among fish smoking workers in Penatarsewu Village, Sidoarjo. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 57 fish smoking workers, from which 25 female workers were selected using purposive sampling. COHb levels were measured through laboratory blood analysis, while data on subjective complaints, age, duration of daily exposure, and tenure were collected through structured interviews. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression to assess the influence of COHb and other related factors on subjective complaints. The results showed that all respondents had COHb levels within normal limits (≤3.5%), with values ranging from 0.40% to 1.72%. Despite this, 92% of workers reported experiencing subjective respiratory complaints. Statistical analysis revealed that COHb levels and tenure did not significantly affect subjective complaints (p>0.05). In contrast, age (p<0.001) and duration of daily exposure (p=0.003) showed a significant association with subjective complaints. In conclusion, subjective respiratory complaints among fish smoking workers were significantly influenced by age and length of exposure rather than COHb levels. These findings highlight the importance of regulating working hours and considering workers’ age to reduce health risks associated with fish smoking activities.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome, characterised by hyperglycaemia, dyslipi-daemia, hypertension, and central obesity, is a global health problem, and exposure to pesticides is an important risk factor for agricultural workers. This study aims to analyse the effects of pesticide exposure, sociodemographic factors, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage behaviour on glucose levels, HDL, and LDL in farmers in Kubu Raya District, West Kalimantan. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 farmers selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through structured interviews, fasting blood tests, and analysed using the chi-square test with a significance level of 95%. The results showed a high prevalence of high blood glucose (56.7%), low HDL (35.0%), and high LDL (55.0%). Pesticide exposure was significantly associated with glucose levels (p=0.043), with hypergly-caemia being higher in the high-exposure group (70.8%) compared to the low-exposure group (33.3%). Age was also significant for glucose (p = 0.046), with a higher prevalence in the ≥40 years group (65.8%) compared to the 40 years group (40.9%). The use of PPE showed a significant association with all metabolic parameters: higher glucose levels were more common in the non-routine PPE use group (70.6% vs. 38.5%; p = 0.012), lower HDL levels were higher in the non-routine group (44.1% vs. 23.1%; p=0.043), and higher LDL levels were more common in the non-routine group (64.7% vs. 42.3%; p = 0.046). These findings confirm that pesticide exposure, age, and APD usage behaviour contribute to metabolic disorders among farmers. Occupational health interventions emphasizing APD use, routine metabolic screening, and community-based education are needed to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome in the agricultural population.

Abstract

Abstract. Khambali, Denanda ET, Rusmiati, Nurmayanti D, Wardoyo IRE, Wardoyo S. 2025. Phytoremediation efficiency of Crinum asiaticum in enclosed spaces based on morphological traits and CO absorption dynamics. Biodiversitas 26: 6205-6211. Indoor air pollution, particularly carbon monoxide (CO), poses a serious health risk in poorly ventilated environments. This study evaluates the phytoremediation potency of Crinum asiaticum, a native ornamental species, in reducing indoor CO concentrations—an area with limited prior investigation. A quasi-experimental design was employed using a 1.2 m × 0.9 m × 0.7 m test chamber, into which CO gas sourced from a 110 cc petrol-powered motorcycle was introduced. Five groups were assessed: one control (no plants) and four treatment groups containing one to four C. asiaticum specimens. CO levels were measured before and 45 minutes after exposure using a calibrated gas detector. Descriptive analysis revealed a dose-dependent reduction in CO levels, with the T4 group achieving the greatest decrease of 28.40%. The T3 and T2 groups treatments reduced concentrations by 14.59% and 7.34%, respectively. The T1 group showed a modest reduction of 4.47%, indicating limited absorption capacity at minimal biomass. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated significant differences among groups (p<0.001), confirming a positive correlation between plant quantity and CO absorption capacity. Although final CO concentrations remained above national indoor air quality standards, the findings underscore the potential of C. asiaticum as a natural biofilter. Its integration into indoor environments not only supports air remediation but also enhances biodiversity through the use of indigenous phytoremediator species. This study presents a novel, eco-friendly approach to mitigating indoor air pollution and advancing environmental health strategies.

Abstract

Purabaya Terminal is characterized by high vehicle density, making it a potential source of air pollution, particularly from fossil fuel-powered vehicles, such as diesel, which emit sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas. Exposure to SO2 poses health risks to traders nearby, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, watery eyes, and dizziness. This study aimed to analyze the health risk levels associated with SO₂ exposure to traders at Purabaya Terminal. The research utilized an Environmental Health Risk Analysis (EHRA) approach with a quantitative descriptive design and a cross-sectional method. A sample of 32 traders was selected using purposive sampling techniques. Air sampling was conducted at four locations within the terminal, and data analysis assessed exposure levels and potential health risks to traders. The average SO2 concentration was found to be 0.018 mg/m3, which is below the threshold limit set in the Minister of Manpower Regulation No. 5 of 2018. The average air temperature was 29.9 oC, with humidity at 78.7% and wind speed at 1.14 m/s from the west. Intake exposure values ranged from 0.0007 to 0.0033 mg/kg/day, while the reference dose (RfC) was 0.026 mg/kg/day. Risk characterization calculations (RQ) indicated that all respondents had RQ values ≤ 1. The study concludes that SO2 exposure levels for traders remain within acceptable health risk range and do not pose a non-carcinogenic health risk. However, it is recommended that traders use personal protective equipment such as masks and that terminal management conducts regular air quality monitoring.
