Abstract

This study investigates bilingual practices in contemporary Arab society by examining code-switching and code-mixing in the film Assal Eswed, directed by Khalid Marei. The study aims to identify the types and linguistic forms of code-switching and code-mixing, as well as the sociolinguistic factors influencing their occurrence. Employing a descriptive-analytical method within a sociolinguistic framework, the data consist of characters’ utterances collected through observation, transcription, and classification. The analysis is based on the theories of code-switching and code-mixing proposed by Suwito and Chaer, the code-switching factors outlined by Hoffmann and Saville-Troike, and the code-mixing factors proposed by Suwito and Suwandi. The findings reveal that all instances of code-switching are external, predominantly involving shifts from Arabic to English, while code-mixing occurs in the form of words, phrases, and clauses. The influencing factors include role identification, register adjustment, explanatory needs, shared mother tongue, lexical gaps, and habitual speech patterns. These findings indicate that Assal Eswed reflects the interaction between language, identity, and globalization in a bilingual Egyptian context, highlighting film as a relevant medium for sociolinguistic analysis and contributing a foundation for broader investigations of language contact, identity, and bilingualism in Arabic media.

Abstract

The hadith corpus is a rich linguistic resource, but remains underexplored for its use of imperatives, whose meanings go far beyond the literal command. Prior scholarship has been predominantly confined to the Qur'anic text or to cross-thematic samples, and no study has systematically examined the meaning of imperatives in a thematic chapter of a classical hadith book, especially from the perspective of ʿilm al-maʿānī. This study addresses the gap by examining the pattern and meaning of imperatives (amr) in Mukhtār al-Aḥādīth al-Nabawīyah wa-al-Ḥikam al-Muḥammadīyah, specifically in the chapter Khātimah fī Tahdhīb al-Nufūs. Data were collected using the observation note technique and analyzed using the distributional method via substitution. A total of 103 imperatives were identified in three patterns: fiʿl al-amr (90), al-fiʿl al-muḍāriʿ bi lām al-amr (11), and ism fiʿl al-amr (2). A notable finding concerns the absence of the maṣdar, one of the four patterns in the ‘ilm al-maʿānī. This absence serves as a stylistic marker that distinguishes this thematic hadith from the Qur'anic imperative patterns. In terms of meaning, reinterpretation reveals the dominance of duʿāʾ (40), followed by ḥaqīqī (30), irshād (28), tahdīd (3), and iltimās (2). The dominance of duʿāʾ and irshād, collectively accounting for 66% of the corpus, demonstrates that imperatives function as a spiritual-pedagogical strategy rather than a binding normative command. These findings contribute to thematic hadith stylistics by establishing an empirical relationship between genre orientation and preference for imperative patterns. From an analytical framework perspective, they also emphasize the importance of the ʿilm al-maʿānī framework for reinterpreting the imperative meaning of hadith.

Abstract

Abstract

This study focuses on identifying the forms of code-switching and analyzing the factors that influence it in the YouTube vlog content of Abdurrahman Hafnizar entitled “Suasana Kelas Universitas Islam Madinah 2023.” Employing a sociolinguistic approach and a descriptive qualitative method, this research examines language use in social and digital contexts. The research data includes all spoken utterances containing Indonesian-Arabic code-switching, collected through participant observation and recording techniques from a vlog video with a duration of 10 minutes and 17 seconds. Data analysis was conducted intralingually to classify code-switching forms based on linguistic structure, and extralingually to examine the underlying social factors. The findings reveal that code-switching appears in various forms, namely the insertion of words, phrases, baster, and clauses. Among all these forms, word and phrase insertions dominate, indicating that code-switching most frequently occurs at the lexical level in spontaneous communication. The main driving factors for code-switching include the use of more familiar and efficient terms, the speaker's personal background and language habits, and the influence of interlocutors. This underscores the role of social identity and interaction in bilingual communities. Functionally, code-switching serves as a communication strategy to reinforce the speaker's academic and religious identity in digital media. This study contributes to digital sociolinguistics by integrating Suwito's classification of code-mixing forms with Suandi's framework of factors. However, this research is limited to a single vlog data source, and it is suggested that future studies explore broader data sources and more diverse analytical approaches.
