Abstract

The film Omar presents a historical Islamic narrative containing various symbols that represent social values in Arab society during the early period of Islam. This study aims to examine the construction of social values in the Darun Nadwah scenes of the film Omar by Hany As'ad using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with data sources consisting of the Darun Nadwah scenes found in the film Omar. Data were collected through the observation method and note-taking technique, focusing on the characters' utterances, facial expressions, costumes, and visual symbols appearing in the selected scenes. Data analysis was conducted through three levels of meaning, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of the study indicate the existence of myths related to titles (laqab), clothing, statues, and characters' expressions that represent the construction of social values in the form of social honor, recognition of social status, reverence for ancestral tradition, and the maintenance of prestige and social influence. The Darun Nadwah scenes represent the social structure of Quraysh society and reveal ideological meanings constructed through both visual and verbal elements in the film. The findings of this study indicate that Roland Barthes' semiotic approach can be used to uncover the representation of social values and ideology hidden behind the signs in audiovisual media.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the changes in rhyme, rhythm, and religious values in the qasidah Ila Arafati from the Diwan Ahmad Syauqi. This study uses a descriptive analytical method with qualitative research and an approach to the study of arudh and qawafi. The research data consists of 20 selected verses, out of a total of 41 verses in the qasidah Ila Arafati. Data collection techniques were carried out using observation and note taking methods, while data analysis techniques were conducted using taqthi arudhi to identify wazan, changes in zihaf and ilat, qafiyah analysis, and interpretation of meaning to reveal religious values. The results show that the qasidah uses Bahr Thawil with zihaf qabdh in hasywu and ilat hadzf in dharab. In terms of qafiyah, this qasidah uses the letter ta (ت) as its rawi muthlaq, classifying it as a taiyyah qasidah that is free from uyub qafiyah. In addition, this qasidah contains religious values, including the value of faith, worship (sharia) and morality. This study contributes to expanding Arabic literary studies through the analysis of arudh, qawafi, and religious values in Ahmad Syauqi’s qasidah Ila Arafati, which has received limited attention in previous research.

Abstract

Discrimination against women in the workplace is still a complex social problem, including in the field of archaeology. NovelAl-Hubb Fii Zaman An-Nafth depicts the story of a female archaeologist who experiences gender discrimination in her work. The main character is prohibited from going looking for statues without permission, while her male colleagues do not face similar restrictions. This study aims to describe the sociological review of literature on moral integrity in the novel. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing the patriarchal and moral areas presented in the novel. The results show that the female character in these novel fights discrimination due to the patriarchal culture inherent in society through self-motivation and internal drive. She shows courage and moral firmness in facing the injustice she experiences. In addition, the moral integrity of the main character is reflected in honesty, consistency, commitment, perseverance, and self-discipline. Values such as responsibility, trust, and justice are also principles that are firmly held in her struggle. This study reveals that moral integrity plays an important role in dealing with gender discrimination. The female character in this novel represents an empowered woman, who not only opposes injustice but also proves that morality, perseverance, and courage can be the main weapons in fighting discrimination. These findings provide new perspectives on how literature can reflect social realities and promote gender equality in society.

Abstract

Social construction and social status conflict are important issues in literary sociology studies, including in Nizami's Layla Majnun. The character of Qais in this novel represents the complex dynamics between social norms, societal expectations, and personal identity. This study aims to describe how social construction shapes Qais' role and position in society, as well as how social status conflict affects his life journey and choices. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a sociology of literature approach. The results show that Qais experiences strong social pressure due to class differences and cultural norms that hinder his love for Layla. Qais' social status as a poet who is considered crazy by society symbolizes resistance to rigid social constructions. The character of Qais represents an individual trapped in a social system that does not give him space, but still shows sincerity and firmness in defending his love and beliefs. The findings provide a deeper understanding of the impact of social construction on individual freedom and the relevance of social status conflict in modern life.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form and meaning of amr as well as the structural components of imperative sentences in the book Ṣuwar min Ḥayātiṣ-Ṣaḥābah by Dr. Abdurrahman Ra’fat Al-Basha, using a semantic approach. This approach focuses on the meaning of language within a specific context. A semantic approach allows for an analysis of how the meaning of amr can vary depending on its situational usage, whether literal (Ḥaqīqī) or figurative (majāzī). The research method employed is descriptive-analytic, which serves to describe and provide an overview of the object under study through collected data or samples. The data were obtained from excerpts containing imperative verbs (fiʻl amr), which were classified according to their form and implied meaning, and then analyzed based on the theory of amr proposed by Ahmad Al-Hāsyimī. The results of this study indicate that the concept of amr in Ṣuwar min Ḥayātiṣ-Ṣaḥābah encompasses seven meanings: 55 instances of literal command (Ḥaqīqī), 2 of honoring (ikrām), 4 of permission (iʾzn), 28 of supplication (duʿāʾ), 43 of guidance (irshād), 17 of request among equals (iltimās), and 8 of threat (tahdīd). Morphologically, the imperative forms appear in two patterns: fiʻl mujarrad (basic/root verbs) and fiʻl mazīd (augmented verbs), both transitive and intransitive. Syntactically, the structure of amr typically follows the pattern: verb (fiʻl) – subject (fāʻil) – object (mafʻūl bih) – preposition (ḥarf jar) and vocative (nida'). Keywords: Balaghah, Fi'il Amr, Ṣuwar min Ḥayātiṣ - Ṣahābah

Abstract

This study examines the representation of luxury culture in Omar Naim’s film Route 10 using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research aims to reveal how luxury objects and fashion function not merely as literal signs but as symbols of social hierarchy, prestige, and cultural adaptation. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, selected dialogues and scenes are analyzed to uncover denotative and connotative meanings embedded in both narrative and visual elements. The findings indicate that luxury is depicted through icons such as branded cars, high-heeled shoes, and premium bags, representing elite status and global prestige. Indexes, including personal assistants, palatial residences, and exclusive privileges, highlight social hierarchies and structural inequalities. Symbols, such as formal attire, wedding gowns, and the fusion of religious tradition with modernity, reflect both aspirational and contradictory aspects of elite culture, including elitism, hypocrisy, and social distinction. Overall, the film presents luxury as a phenomenon that functions both as a marker of prestige and a source of social tension, illustrating how material and symbolic representations of wealth influence perceptions of identity, status, and cultural values in contemporary Arab society.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson and the politeness principles proposed by Geoffrey Leech used by the character Afaf in the film From The Ashes directed by Khalid Fahad. This research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method. The research data consist of Afaf's utterances, collected through the non-participatory observation method and note-taking technique. The data were analyzed using the pragmatic identity method. The findings reveal 83 data items, consisting of 39 politeness strategy data, dominated by the bald-on record strategy with 32 occurrences, and 44 politeness principle data, dominated by violations of the tact maxim with 26 occurrences. The analysis also indicates that the bald-on record strategy may be associated with either maxim compliance or maxim violation, depending on the context of the utterance. Meanwhile, positive politeness is more frequently associated with maxim compliance, whereas the off-record strategy tends to be associated with maxim violations. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Afaf predominantly employs the bald-on record strategy and tends to violate politeness principles more frequently in her interactions.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to classify the forms of al-munādā used to address the main character, Iyasu, in Najib Kailani's novel Aẓ-Ẓill Al-Aswad, based on the speaker's social relationships, and to analyze the meaning of these forms within the relationships that underlie them. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using the listen-and-record technique for 34 instances of al-munādā in which Iyasu served as the addressee. The data were drawn from 10 groups of speakers, categorized into three relational groups: Family, Court, and Public. The analysis combined Al-Ghalayyini's classification of al-munādā with Hymes' SPEAKING framework to uncover the context and purpose of the utterances. The results revealed seven variations of al-munādā forms, distributed differently across each relational category. The mufrad 'alam form was found only in the Family category, while the mudhāf form appeared in both the Family and Court categories, with lexical choices producing different meanings. The Family category dominated the use of forms of address, followed by the Court and the Public. In terms of meaning, forms of address in the Family category served to express emotional closeness; those in the Court category represented hierarchical relationships; while some forms used by Tafari were employed manipulatively to create dramatic irony in the narrative. These findings indicated a correspondence between the grammatical forms of al-munādā and the meanings they conveyed. The choice of al-munādā form not only reflected the rules of nahw but also served as a tool for marking social relations, power distribution, and communication strategies among characters.
