Abstract

Vibrio harveyi is a Gram-negative marine bacterium from the genus Vibrio known for its ability to emit light (bioluminescence). This bacterium is rod-shaped, moves using flagella at one end, has facultative anaerobic properties, and thrives in environments with high salt content (halophilic). Vibrio harveyi is often found in tropical and subtropical marine waters, especially in coastal ecosystems. Nanotechnology, which is the focus of this study, is a technology based on objects (structures) that are at the nanometer level, often used in biomedical and environmental applications. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of SLS (nanoenzyme) in inhibiting the growth of Vibrio harveyi, which can cause disease in various marine organisms, including fish and shrimp. The method used in this study was experimental with a quantitative approach, where various concentrations of SLS were tested on bacterial growth. This study was conducted from June to July 2024, under controlled laboratory conditions. The results of this study indicate that the effect of SLS (nano enzyme) cannot inhibit the growth of Vibrio harveyi bacteria at various concentrations, namely 100%, 40%, 20%, and 10%. This is thought to be due to the particle size of the nano, where a smaller nanoparticle size can increase its effectiveness as an antimicrobial. In addition, several other methods need to be tested on SLS (nano enzyme) to understand further its ability to inhibit the growth of Vibrio harveyi bacteria, such as combining with other antimicrobial materials or modifying the nanoparticle structure.

Abstract

Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture faces challenges due to environmental stress, which affects growth and survival. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic supplementation on the cumulative stress index (CSI) and growth performance of vaname shrimp cultured under zero salinity conditions. A completely randomized design was employed with four treatments, each replicated three times: Treatment A (Commercial Feed (Control)); Treatment B (Commercial Feed + Probiotic 10 ml/kg); Treatment C (Commercial Feed + Probiotic 20 ml/kg); and Treatment D (Commercial Feed + Probiotic 30 ml/kg). CSI and absolute weight growth were observed after 10 days of cultivation. Water quality parameters were monitored throughout the study. The results indicated that Treatment B (10 ml/kg probiotics) yielded the lowest CSI value (30), reflecting the highest stress tolerance, followed by Treatment C (39), Treatment D (68), and the control group (85). Furthermore, Treatment B produced the highest absolute weight growth (38.6 grams), significantly outperforming other treatments. Statistical analysis showed a significant effect of probiotic supplementation on growth performance (p < 0.05) but no significant effect on survival rate (p > 0.05). Probiotic supplementation was proven effective in reducing stress and improving digestive efficiency in shrimp, thereby supporting better growth. These findings highlight the potential of probiotics, particularly at a dose of 10 ml/kg, as a sustainable approach to enhancing shrimp aquaculture performance under challenging environmental conditions.

Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of an IoT-based biofloc system on Nile tilapia aquaculture by comparing it to a conventional biofloc system. The experiment was conducted using two treatments: (1) biofloc with IoT-based monitoring for real-time dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature control, and (2) conventional biofloc without IoT. Results showed that fish in the IoT system had higher growth (319.44 g, FCR 0.78) than those in the conventional system (236.67 g, FCR 1.19), due to more stable DO levels. Biofloc volume was also higher in the IoT system (34.14 ml/L vs. 22.73 ml/L), supporting microbial balance and natural feed availability. While temperature had no significant effect, IoT helped maintain environmental stability. These findings highlight IoT’s potential to enhance productivity, optimize feed conversion, and support aquaculture in the Industry 4.0 era.
