Abstract

Culturing Silkworms (Tubifex sp.) as a highly nutritious natural feed for farmed fish has been limited due to reliance on wild supply and limitation on reliable growth medium. This study aimed to assess the effects of addition of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and Javanese turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza) powders in culture media on the productivity and quality of Tubifex sp. The study was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments: P0 (no addition), P1 (2.5 g turmeric + 7.5 g Javanese turmeric), P2 (5 g turmeric + 5 g Javanese turmeric), and P3 (7.5 g turmeric + 2.5 g Javanese turmeric), per 100 g of feed for each treatment. Feeding was done every 3 days at a dose of 1140 g m-² for 21 days. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan's test. Results showed that turmeric and Javanese turmeric powders supplementation significantly increased Tubifex sp. weight growth and productivity, with P2 giving the best results (317.54 ± 13.16 g and 2646.18 ± 109.74 g m-² cycle-1) (P<0.05). The highest curcumin absorption was recorded in P2 at 44.32 ± 11.30 mg kg-1 (P<0.05). Microbiological tests showed that all treatments were free from Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli contamination. This study indicated that addition of turmeric and Javanese turmeric powders in feed could improve the quality and safety of Tubifex sp. in aquaculture.

Abstract

The demand for Siamese catfish seeds continues to increase every year. Therefore, it is essential to maintain high-quality seeds in adequate quantities, supported by the availability of natural feed such as bloodworms (Tubifex sp.). One of the efforts to improve hygiene and reduce pathogenic bacteria is through the sanitation treatment of feed using fermented tofu waste and mustard greens waste. The fermentation of tofu waste and mustard greens has a high protein content, which can enhance the nutritional value essential for the growth of fish seeds. The objective of this research is to analyze the effectiveness of using hygienic bloodworms treated with fermented tofu waste and mustard greens waste on the performance of Siamese catfish seed breeding. The method employed is a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications. The research data were analyzed using ANOVA statistical tests and Tukey's post-hoc test at a 5% significance level. The sanitation treatment of feed with the addition of fermented tofu waste and mustard greens resulted in the highest nutritional content and the highest abundance of beneficial bacteria on the fifth day of maintenance. The results showed a significant effect () on the absolute growth and specific growth rate of Siamese catfish seeds. The absolute length growth of the Siamese catfish seeds was 9.37±0.044 mm, while the absolute weight growth was 0.08±0.0169 grams. The specific length growth rate of the Siamese catfish seeds was 7.10±0.017%, and the specific weight growth rate was 18.35±0.025%. The survival rate of Siamese catfish seeds across all treatments reached 98%. The sanitation treatment of natural bloodworms with fermented tofu waste and mustard greens is recommended to enhance the nutritional content of bloodworms and accelerate the growth of Siamese catfish seeds.

Abstract

Excessive feeding not only increases production costs, but also it can pollute the environment due to unconsumed feed residue. One of the strategies that can be used to increase aquaculture efficiency is by implementing restricted feeding techniques. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different restricted feeding intervals on tilapia growth performance, feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), and feed cost efficiency. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The study consisted of three treatments and four replications using one container separated using net partition in a pond with a rearing period of 50 days. Periodic restricted feeding affected the growth of tilapia length and weight, but did not affect Survival Rate (SR) and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). The highest rate of growth was shown by P2 (restricted feeding period of 1 day) with a length of 8.79 3.18 cm and a weight of 9.46 3.18 g, and the lowest rate of growth was in treatment P3 (restricted fasting period of 2 days) with a length of 8.2 1.82 cm and a weight of 7.47 2.45 g. Although FCR and SR did not differ significantly across treatments, P2 had the lowest FCR (0.76) and highest SR (83%), with a 23% reduction in feed cost compared to P1. In conclusion, restricted feeding with one fasting day per week improved tilapia growth and feed utilization efficiency, offering a cost-effective and sustainable feeding strategy for aquaculture. Keywords:TilapiaGrowthFeed conversion ratioSurvival rateCompletely randomized design
