Abstract

Flat design has evolved and taken many shapes and forms. Most of the arrangements are arranged in a double-load layout where the units are positioned face to face along the corridor. Another type is two single-loaded flats that are configured to face the courtyard. Building façade also varies from those with shaded surfaces to those with minimum sun protection. Modification in design clearly has an impact on the thermal performance of the buildings. The aim of the study is to investigate the facade configuration on the thermal performance of the building. This study uses simulation software, namely, Design Builder, to predict the thermal performance of the buildings. Several variants of window areas, sun shading, balconies are arranged to explore their effects on thermal performance. Flat with yard selected as a reference model. The results showed that the smaller the window area and the greater coverage given to the window with a shading device, combined with the balcony, can provide a decrease in air temperature up to 0.57 ⁰C, with a reduction in cooling degree hours percentage of 36.97% comparing to the reference model.

Abstract

Lack of education and training facilities for youth people who are in accordance with the visual learner's learning system makes one aspect of the lack of interest of youth in developing and increasing their productivity. Therefore, this research is conducted to provide an architectural concept that can adapt to the visual learner's learning system for youth. The design concept of the design uses a multisensory theory approach to create attention, sensation and memory into the visual learner learning system for youth. In addition, the direct analogy approach to visual functions becomes one of the design strategies to give attention especially youth in better understanding the stages to be carried out, namely the professionalism stage. Architectural factors that influence the productivity of youth are the shape, scale, color, and materials used in rooms and buildings. This was obtained by means of observation and participatory questionnaires with youth of productive age. Besides the professionalism factors that can assess the productivity of youth are knowledge, skills, and attitude. This was obtained by the questionnaire method with the HRD manager. The method used in the idea uses the concept base framework design method. To present a moment in the design framework, it is necessary to have a research method in it, namely participatory qualitative methods, literature observation and environmental mapping on selected land. The moment presented will limit the exploration of elements that have a role in increasing visual perception in youth’s productivity. Moment will evaluate architectural factors that can be adapted to existing environmental conditions, so as to create the perfect concept in increasing the productivity of youth.

Abstract

Rumah susun (walk up flat) are one of the buildings that rely on natural ventilation. However, the application of natural ventilation in rumah susun (walk up flat) in urban areas is influenced by tropical climate problems such as high temperatures and low wind speeds. The design of the openings in the facade has not been able to distribute air into rooms properly. In addition, the layout design makes single-sided natural ventilation the only strategy possible for double loaded corridor type flat. This study aimed to determine the effect of a combination of pivot window designs and wing walls in directing and distribute air into room. The study was conducted in two stages, that was field measurements and experimental with Computational Fluids Dynamics simulations. Simulations were conducted on a combination designs of wing walls and pivot window with 45o and 90o opening angles to determine their effects on the distribution and indoor air velocity. The combination design of wing walls and pivot window created a pressure difference so that it could increase indoor air velocity under both oblique and parallel to the opening. In the direction of the wind that was not oriented to the openings, the combination of wing walls and vertical pivot windows with 90o opening angles increased indoor air velocity up to five times in the corner room. While the 45o opening angle increased the indoor air velocity up to seven times than base case condition in a middle room.

Abstract

The physical environment is considered as one factor which has an influence on individual’s creative capacity. While the physical setting may not directly induce one’s creativity, its effect on creativity is shown in the way it is perceived and utilized by the individual. Therefore, through subjective experience, the built environment may actively hinder or encourage one’s creative capacity. Thus, the design of creative spaces is one of architectural interest to potentially aid creative activities by focusing on the users experience of the physical setting. This paper aims to compose a design concept and criteria to address the needs of creative spaces. The literature review examines perception and experience of the built environment, sensory considerations and creativity. Therefore, a phenomenological study is used to investigate individual’s perception and subjective experience of the physical environment during the creative process. The result of this study shows that considering individuals’ needs, the design criteria is centered on movement, sensory information and social engagement. The concept derived is based on architecture as ‘adventure’, since it communicates an experience analogous to the creative process. Features of the concept are then applied to massing and form, social engagement, the natural environment and movement as an eventful experience.

Abstract

Balai Padang Adat is one of the traditional building in tropical area. The characteristic of this building is large, long and deep dimention but it has limited area of the openings. Field meassurement for 3 days and 3 times (09.00, 12.00, 15.00) is used to identify factors that affect daylighting performance. This research found that daylighting performance was in poor quality. The outdoor illumination is very high which reached 100.000 lux caused by latitude, altitude and cloud cover. The latitude is 2o in the south from the equator’s line and the altitude is 450 meters above sea level which close from the sun. The cloud cover is minimum lower than 40%. The indoor illumination can reach 1 lux as the lowest level during the day caused by obstruction, overhang, shape and space of the building, material reflectance, area and position of the openings. There is a building in the west and east and a vegetation in the south as an obstruction. This building has a large dimention with double layer room, but it has minimum material reflectance of the wall and floor. This building has a minimum area of the openings, high position of the openings near the overhangs and also long dimention of the overhang. Meassurement was done in Laras-Pematang room as a living room and Bilik room as a bedroom and kitchen. Overall, daylighting performance of this building can not meet standart activity such as illumination value, daylighting factors and daylighting distribution from morning to the evening.

Abstract

Banjarmasin city has the character of settlements along the river that reflects the concept of the authentic Banjar settlements on river banks as a product of Nusantara architecture’s. However, the existence of these settlements began to lose their existence due to changes in life orientation from river culture to landed culture. To restore the existence of these settlements, the government of Banjarmasin city plans to develop these settlements into tourist villages with Banjar culture. This encourages optimization of existing potential by improving the quality of settlements that pay attention to various aspects in the context of the location being developed, such as environmental damage, water quality, and applicable regulations. Although there are many design criteria related to riverbank settlements in Banjarmasin, there are some aspects that have been neglected such as the cultural aspects of urang Banjar which are related to the river and Islam. This has an impact on the quality of settlements that reduce the level of kinship in the Banjar community. By using a force-based framework, the design criteria will be formulated by applying a strategy of extending tradition. The design criteria produced, cover various design aspects that are closely related to activities, order, form, building construction, supporting elements, and circulation patterns to improve the quality of the settlement, so that it can develop into a self-sustaining area with food security, energy sources, and the conservation area of Banjar culture.

Abstract

In urban areas, especially urban settlements, low thermal comfort at pedestrian height and the high use of building energy are two interrelated conditions. Geometry of built environment is a factor that correlates with thermal conditions of the location and comfort. Understanding how geometry of built environment affects conditions and thermal comfort can be the basis for improving thermal condition as well as increasing thermal comfort. This study examines the influence of urban settlement geometry to thermal conditions and thermal comfort of urban space. An experiment was carried out on ten blocks, consisting of two block models and two orientations: Blocks with Different Height-to-Width Ratio (H / W = 0.8-1.5-2.3) and Blocks with the Same Height-to-Width Ratio but With Different Left-Right Height (H / W = 1.5-1.5'-1.5 "), respectively in the North-South and East-West orientation. The ENVI-met 3.1 program was used to simulate the conditions and thermal comfort of the blocks in the hottest day conditions. The results of this study indicate the geometry of the urban settlement influences two factors or thermal environment, i.e., direct solar radiation reception or block irradiation duration and wind speed. Features of the geometry affecting the thermal conditions are angle of the sky opening and block's orientation towards incoming winds. These two features are regarded as the dominant factor influencing the overall thermal conditions and comfort of the settlement blocks. This study also confirms that hight-width (H/W) ratio as the main parameter governing thermal conditions and comfort of the block.

Abstract

Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia, which has many problems. Urban density is a major issue which has problems in it, starting from the population density up to the limitations of burial grounds that exist today. Design problem which arises is uniting the facility of funeral homes, crematoriums, and tombs in one area to reduce the mobilization on the road resulting in traffic density. Urban density has resulted in a couple of problems ranging from population density to scarcity of lands. Crematorium and vertical burial therefore become a crucial part of a city. While there has been less open green spaces, crematorium and vertical burial are expected not to reduce the open green spaces. Data scape as a design method is used to obtain design criteria for preliminary design. To obtain a form of structure, combination with the multiple addition geometry method is attempted. A design obtained by making vertical buriel footprint design that is able to provide sufficient absorption area by taking into account the percentage of urban open green space. To create a open green space and water absorption areas by lifting some mass of the building.

Abstract

The traditional house is able to adapt the climate around them and it can reduce the burden of energy use to adjust the comfort of occupants. The development pattern of occupants’ activity adjusts to a modern life that indirectly affects the function and condition of the building. This gives rise to a new phenomenon, whether development sheath openings in buildings can still meet the needs of lighting for the activity of the occupants. This research was conducted with the aim to clarify and identify the deployment sheath openings in buildings on the performance of natural lighting in Betang House. The method experiment with the help simulation is used to find a causal relationship from deployment sheath openings in Betang House building performance against natural lighting. The experiment is conducted with the simulation using Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2011. The final result of the research indicates deployment openings in the façade have natural lighting performance that already meet the standards of the lighting for the activity. Deployment openings with the addition of extents openings could increase illuminantion and daylight factor space by 10% and 14%, but the value of the resulting illuminantion uniformity is not too high. The addition of height can increase the value of daylight factor of 13%. The ratio of lighting uniformity additional height opening is higher, but that resulted being lower illuminantion 0.3%. Rumbak tahansengan deployment at facade can improve the ratio of the lighting uniformity for activity up to 9.6%.
