Abstract

Bleaching is a dental treatment chemically on the vital and non vital teeth undergoing discoloration. One technique is in office bleaching. Application of bleaching agent is not only touching the healthy tooth tissue, but also potentially touched restorative nanofill dental composite resins. Materials research is resin composite nanofil (Filtek Z350, 3 m, USA) and the bleaching agent 40% hydrogen peroxide (Opalescense Boost, USA). Disc-shaped sample (diameter 10 mm, thickness 2 mm) as many as 12 samples and divided into 3 groups each sample 4. The samples applied with bleaching agent 40% hydrogen peroxide at room temperatures (25 C) and contact time: 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 60 minutes. Surface roughness was measured before and after application of bleaching. Surface roughness was measured before and after application of bleaching. Statistical analysis using a one way ANOVA and LSD 0,05. The results showed the average delta composite resin nanofil roughness with time sequential contacts 30, 45 and 60 minutes is 0,040 0,016 µm ± 0,045 µm ± 0.025, and 0.025 ± 0.125 µm. ANOVA test showed that there is a sinificant influence of variation of long application of hydrogen peroxide 40% against a nanofill composite resin surface roughness (p< 0.05). Test LSD indicates there is a significant difference between the delta’s average surface roughness on all groups, except the group of 30 and 45 minutes. Conclusion this research is a variation time contacts of 40% hydrogen peroxide application increases the surface roughness of a composite resin nanofil.

Abstract

Nanohybrid composite resin is a type of composite resin restorative material containing micro-sized filler particles incorporated with nanoparticles. Composite resin restoration in the oral cavity can release its filler particles, one of them is aluminum ion. The pH of saliva is varied. This research aimed to determine the influence of salivary pH on aluminum ion solubility of nanohybrid composite resin. The materials used were nanohybrid composite resin Tetric Evoceram (Ivoclar Vivadent, Austria) and artificial saliva with pH of 5.6, 6.7, and 8.0. Twelve disc-shaped composite resin samples sized 5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick were made. Samples were polymerized using light curing unit for 20 seconds. Composite resin samples were divided into three pH groups (n=4) and then each sample was soaked in 10 mL artificial saliva inside of polyethylene bottle. The immersion was done in the incubator for 14 days at 37ºC. The concentration of aluminum ion in artificial saliva solutions subsequently was calculated using AAS. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA (a=0,05). The mean concentration of aluminum ion released into saliva with pH 5.6, 6.7, and 8.0 were 0.538 ± 0.996 ppm, 0.431 ± 0.981 ppm, and 0.350 ± 0.071 ppm respectively. The result of One-way ANOVA showed a significant influence of salivary pH variation to the solubility of aluminum ion on nanohybrid composite resin (p<0,05). LSD test showed a significant difference only between saliva pH 5,6 and 8,0. The conclusion of this research was that low salivary pH increased the solubility of aluminum ion on nanohybrid resin composite in saliva.

Abstract

Fiber reinforced composite (FRC) contains a polimer matrix and fibers. The FRC application as a dental splinting material requires a considerable fleksural strength to withstand the mastication forces. The fiber orientation is one factor influences the mechanical strength of FRC. The aim of study was to compare the fleksural strength between unidirectional and bidirectional orientations of sisal fiber (Agave sisalana) on FRC. The FRC with a flowable composite matrix (Master Flow, Brazil) and sisal fiber (Agave sisalana) (Balittas, Indonesia) were used. The FRC samples (25x2x2mm) were made with unidirectional and bidirectional fibers orientation (n=4). The fleksural strengths were measured using the universal testing machine and the data were analyzed statistically using an independent t-test (a=0,05). The results showed that the average fleksural strength of FRC unidirectional group was 36.56 ± 2.91 MPa and bidirectional group was 24.09 ± 2.08 MPa. The independent t-test showed a significant difference in fleksural strength between unidirectional orientation and bidirectional orientation fiber (p <0.05). This study reveals that the fleksural strength of FRC with unidirectional orientation was greater than the bidirectional orientation of sisal fiber (Agave sisalana).

Abstract

Synthetic dental fiber tape for fiber reinforcement (FRC) restoration is relatively costly and its availability is still limited in Indonesia, so natural dental fibers have been used as an alternative material. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of impregnation of various fiber tape toward the flexural strength and hardness of FRC. The materials used were natural Bombyx mori silk fibers (Indonesia), dental polyethylene tape (Construct Kerr, USA), dental Quartz tape (Quartz Splint UD, France), dental E-glass tape (Everstick TM, GC, Japan), silane coupling agent (Ultradent, Jordan), and composite resin (Denfil-Flow, USA). Five groups of samples consisted of FRC with various fiber tapes were prepared: unidirectional-silk, braided-silk, quartz, polyethylene, and E-glass. The five groups of FRC were tested to determine the flexural strength and hardness. The results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, followed by LSD test. The results showed that the highest flexural strength was in the quartz group (496.84 ± 109.14 MPa), while the lowest was in the braided-silk group (139.39 ± 4.30 MPa). The highest hardness property was in the unidirectional-silk group (141.29 ± 25.17 VHN), while the lowest was in the braided-silk group (139.39 ± 4.30 VHN). The ANOVA showed that various fiber tapes significantly influenced the flexural strength and hardness of FRC (p < 0.05). The LSD showed that the unidirectional-silk, braided-silk, and polyethylene groups demonstrated no significant difference. The LSD for hardness showed that the unidirectional-silk group had a significant difference with the other groups (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that various fiber tapes influenced the flexural strength and hardness of FRC. Natural silk fibers showed comparable flexural strength and hardness with the other fiber tapes.

Abstract

Acrylic resin is the material most often used as a base for dentures; however, acrylic resin has shortcomings in its biological properties as it does not have antimicrobial properties. ZnO is added to acrylic resin because of its antimicrobial properties. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles as a heat polymerization acrylic resin coating on the coating’s resistance to abrasion. A total of 24 acrylic resin samples were made, each measuring 13 x 13 x 2 mm. The acrylic resin was coated with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate), then with ZnO nanoparticles with varying concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% in ethanol. ZnO nanoparticle coating was applied using the dip coating method. Subsequently, the samples were subjected to an initial roughness test, abrasion test, and final roughness test. The data obtained were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and LSD(0.05). The results showed that the mean change in roughness (μm) and standard deviation for groups I to IV were 0.11 ± 0.13, 0.08 ± 0.33, 0.1 ± 0.12, and 0.19 ± 0.15, respectively. The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that there was no significant difference in the roughness after the abrasion test (p > 0.05). Thus, zinc oxide nanoparticles can reduce surface roughness and are resistant to surface abrasion.

Abstract

Background: Corncob powder is a promising filler that needs to be assessed when it is incorporated into inlay waxes to modified its properties. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effect of different concentrations of corncob powder filler on physical and mechanical properties of inlay waxes. Methods: Five groups of inlay waxes were prepared from paraffin, corncob powder, carnauba wax, and beeswax in varying proportions (w/w%), namely, group I (70:0:25:5), II (65:5:25:5), III (60:10:25: 5), IV (55:15:25:5), and V (50:20:25:5). The wax mixture was heated at 80°C, filtered, added with corncob powder, and stirred until homogeneous then poured into mold for melting point, residue on ignition, flow, hardness, and trimming samples. They were based on ANSI/ADA specification no.122 and ASTM D 1321. The data were analyzed through one-way ANOVA, post-hoc LSD, and Tamhane tests (p = 0.05), except trimming test data. Results: One-way ANOVA revealed that the concentration of corncob filler influenced all inlay waxes properties (p<0.05). LSD and Tamhane post-hoc test, showed significant different among mostly between groups of tests. Addition corncob powder increased the melting point, hardness, and residue of inlay waxes but decreased the flow of inlay waxes. Addition corncob did not influence the trimming property of inlay waxes. Conclusion: The concentration of corncob filler added in inlay wax compositions influenced the melting point, flow, hardness and residue properties but did not influence trimming properties. Inlay wax containing 10% corncob filler potential as a local inlay wax, but further research should be done to overcome the residue on ignition property that higher than standards.

Abstract

Introduction: Burkitt’s lymphoma is a high-grade B-cell neoplasm and one of the most aggressive malignancies of lymphoid origins which found mainly in the paediatric population. The treatment options of this tumour are still limited. However, a new strategy for refractory tumour, phosphorothioate oligonucleotide antisense technique has watched with keen interest. This study was aimed to examine the effect of antisense p45Skp-2 (Skp-2 AS) suppressed migratory chemotactic and metastasis of oral malignant Burkitt’s lymphoma (Raji) cell through down-regulation of MTA-1 and E-cadherin. Methods: True experiment laboratory with post-test control group design was confirmed in this study. The efficiency of Skp-2 AS in the suppression of cell chemotactic migration was examined by Boyden chamber assay. To evaluate the inhibition of cell metastasis was conducted by decreasing MTA-1 expression protein. The expressions of MTA-1, E-cadherin and α-tubulin protein were investigated by Western blot analysis. Results: The results revealed that the number of chemotactic migration of Skp-2 AS treated Raji cell was significantly decreased when compared with that of sense p45Skp-2 (Skp-2 S) and scrambled control (SC) cells (P<0.05) followed by decreased expressions of MTA-1 protein and overexpression of E-cadherin. Interestingly, the expression of α-tubulin protein as an internal control was approximately similar in each transfectant cells. Conclusion: p45Skp-2 have an antitumor activity via suppression of migratory chemotactic activity and metastasis on oral Burkitt’s lymphoma cells through down-regulation of MTA-1 and induction of E-cadherin proteins targeting this molecule could represent a promising new therapeutic approach for this type of cancer.
