Abstract

Oral health problems are more vulnerable in children with disabilities than children in general. One of the efforts to minimize these problems is to increase parents' awareness of the importance of maintaining effective oral health in children with disabilities. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the knowledge and skills of parents who have children with disabilities in the early detection of oral health problems so that severity does not occur. This community service program is in the form of socialization activities and early detection skills training conducted for 71 parents/caregivers on 20 September 2024 at the RSGMP Baiturrahmah Hall, Padang City. Pre and post-assessment of parents' knowledge and skills were conducted, out of 72 parents/caregivers only 39 parents/caregivers completed the pre and post-test. The results of the analysis of existing data showed a significant increase in both the knowledge and skills of parents in the early detection of oral health problems. This activity needs to be carried out regularly as a promotional effort to improve the degree of oral health in children with disabilities.

Abstract

Introduction: Mouthwash is an antibiotic-based product that fights bacteria, oral infections, cleans, deodorizes, refreshes the oral cavity, and is an antiseptic. Carrageenan is a class of galactan polysaccharides found as an intercellular matrix substance in red algae or algae from the Rhodophyta class. Carrageenan is also known to contain secondary metabolite compounds, namely flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenoids, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Aim: The aim of the study is to determine flavonoid levels and cytotoxicity assay of carrageenan gel mouthwash. Methods:  The samples of this study were carrageenan gel mouthwash and fibroblast cells. The samples used was divided into cell control groups (negative) and carrageenan gel mouthwash groups with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4%. Results: Total flavonoid levels in carrageenan gel mouthwash preparations with 4 different concentrations have flavonoid levels with a 0.5% concentration of 45.42%, 1% concentration of 69.77%, 2% concentration of 65.09%, and 4% concentration of 38.97%.  The cytotoxicity test showed cell viability of more than 60% at various concentrations. The highest cell viability in the carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash with a concentration of 2% at 80.57%. Conclusion: The carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash that has the highest flavonoid content at a concentration 1% was 69.77% and the carrageenan gel mouthwash was non-toxic to fibroblast cells.

Abstract

Introduction: The elderly population is increasing both globally and nationally, including in Dumai City, Riau Province. The older they get, the more health problems they complain about, and xerostomia is one of the most common issues. There are only a few studies that examine the problem of xerostomia in the elderly. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how xerostomia relates to gender, age, and overall health among elderly people in Dumai City, Riau Province. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design approach. The survey included data on gender, age, and subjective assessment of xerostomia using the Summated Xerostomia Inventory in Indonesian (SXI-ID) questionnaire, consisting of 5 questions with answer options: never, rarely, sometimes, often, and always. In addition, the standard xerostomia question, "How often does the mouth feel dry?" has four answer options: never, sometimes, often, and always. Sampling was done by the accidental sampling technique; 247 respondents met the requirements and participated in the study completely. Results: The study showed that more respondents of the male gender (18.6 ± 2.7) suffered from xerostomia than women (17.4 ± 4.4), which was statistically significant (p<0.05). The results of the Spearman Rank correlation test between the age variable and the xerostomia condition showed statistically significant results (p<0.05), namely that the older the age, the greater the potential for xerostomia in the elderly. Conclusion: The incidence of xerostomia is more prevalent in men and as individuals age. Promotive and preventive efforts for the oral health of the elderly need to be strengthened to minimize oral health problems due to xerostomia.
