Abstract

For decades, language anxiety has been a popular research topic in the field of language learning and studies suggested that learners' second/foreign (L2) writing anxiety, one of the anxiety constructs, negatively affected learners' L2 writing achievement. This study aimed to investigate the thesis writing anxiety of Indonesian pre-service English teachers working on their theses in the final semesters of their study. The participants of this study were 105 pre-service teacher participants from ten universities across six different provinces in Indonesia. The study employed an online survey as the method of data collection. It found that generally, the participants had a moderate level of thesis writing anxiety. The detailed findings were further elaborated under four categories: “Difficulty in Grammar and Writing Anxiety”, “Negative Feelings when Writing a Thesis in English”, “Positive Feelings when Writing a Thesis in English”, and “Degree of Influence of Advisors and Peers to Writing Anxiety”. Based on the findings, possible contributions, implications, and limitations are suggested alongside suggested directions for future studies.

Abstract

The present study intends to investigate the attitudes of English department students on the use of TikTok for English vocabulary learning. The participants of this study were 116 Indonesian students from the English Language Education and English Letters Departments from 26 different universities in 10 provinces. This study employed an online survey as the method of collecting data. It found that generally, the participants reported highly positive attitudes towards using TikTok for learning vocabulary. However, they seemed to have ambivalent attitudes towards the effectiveness of using the platform for vocabulary learning, perhaps attributed to the default nature of TikTok as a social media rather than a learning media. Informed by the findings, the study suggested teachers incorporate TikTok in skill-based and vocabulary-building classes in the first semesters of English department curricula. Limitations and contributions of this study are stated along with the suggested direction of future relevant studies in the field.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate Indonesian second language (L2) learners’ Self-Directed Learning (SDL) in English during the online classes due to the Covid-19 pandemic and to investigate whether there was a significant difference in SDL between female and male learners. As online learning is implemented nationwide in Indonesia due to the pandemic, it becomes paramount to investigate learners’ SDL, considered very critical in online learning settings where teachers' ability to check learners' progress is not as extensive as it is in the face-to-face mode of instruction. The participants of the study were 187 undergraduate students taking English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes. Through the data obtained from the online questionnaire, the study found that learners, in general, reported a high level of SDL even though many of them still embraced procrastination behaviours and considered the pragmatic need to pass the EAP class more important than the actual L2 learning. It also found that there was no significant difference between female learners’ SDL and that of male learners. Based on the findings and analysis of the possible factors, possible contributions of the study are presented along with the possible limitations and suggested directions for future research in the field. HIGHLIGHTS: Learners, in general, reported a high level of SDL. Despite that, many of them still embraced procrastination behaviours and considered the pragmatic need to pass the English for Academic Purposes class more important than the actual L2 learning. With the nationwide implementation of online learning in Indonesia due to the pandemic, understanding learners' SDL is crucial

Abstract

The community service activity was conducted in the form of online training on Zoom and Youtube platforms. The participants were 80 lecturers, teachers, and university students from 28 different institutions. It aimed to facilitate the participants to be able to improve the quality of their scientific articles and to submit their articles to ‘carefully chosen’ journals. It lasted for 100 minutes. There were six important points regarding how the quality of research articles could be maintained and improved. Firstly, the participants should do a lot of reading before writing. Secondly, they should have strong rationales of conducting their studies. Thirdly, they needed to use combination of descriptive and analytical expressions. Fourth, they should write or review only relevant literature in meaty way. Next, they should ensure that all of the in-text citations correspond to the references. Last but not least, they should implement ethical principles in research. Furthermore, regarding how the participants could choose which journal was ‘best’ for their articles, four important points were discussed: choosing a journal which ‘matched’ the quality of the article, choosing a journal with regular publication, adhering to the chosen journal’s template, and asking the journal editors about the duration of the review process.

Abstract

This study intended to investigate International Posture and Intercultural Awareness of Indonesian L2 learners of English who studied at English Language departments. It also sought to investigate the extent to which learners' International Posture influenced their Intercultural Awareness. It was conducted to fill the gap in the literature on the scarcity of studies on International Posture and Intercultural Awareness in Indonesia despite the likelihood of communication prospects in English with international people. To this end, it involved 73 participants studying in English Language Education departments at two universities in Java, Indonesia, in a survey. Through descriptive statistics on SPSS, the study found a quite high level of Intergroup Approach-Avoidance Tendencies (IAAT), the first dimension of International Posture. It also found a moderate-high level of Interest in International Vocation and Activities (IIVA), the second dimension of International Posture. Furthermore, the participants’ awareness of their own cultures and those of others was generally high though some of the participants' awareness of specific aspects of other cultures was reported to be low. Using multiple regression, the study found that generally, the participants’ International Posture significantly influenced their Intercultural Awareness, accounting for 22.3% of the total variance in Intercultural Awareness. However, from the beta coefficient analysis, it was found that only the participants’ IAAT significantly influenced their Intercultural Awareness in a positive direction. Their IIVA did not significantly influence it. The findings highlighted the need to nurture second/foreign language (L2) learners’ International Posture and conduct further investigation on the possible impacts of learners’ International Posture on learners’ ICC in general.

Abstract

Extensive research on second and foreign language learning suggests that gender can significantly influence language acquisition. While some studies indicate that female learners often outperform males in language tasks, the evidence is inconsistent, and findings may vary depending on the learning context. This highlights the need to explore further how gender interacts with other factors, such as motivation and self-efficacy, in shaping L2 learning outcomes. This study explores how gender affects learners' instrumental motivation and self-efficacy in learning English as a second language. A total of 144 L2 learners from non-English departments at a private university in Java, Indonesia, participated in this research, which utilized a survey design. Paper-based questionnaires were distributed to participants, who were recruited through convenience sampling. The findings revealed that female learners reported slightly higher levels of instrumental motivation (Mean female = 43.40) than male learners (Mean score-male = 42.78). However, the difference was not statistically significant, t= .86, p = .15. In terms of self-efficacy, male learners demonstrated marginally higher levels (Mean score-male = 47.71) than females (Mean score-female = 46.32), but again, this difference was not statistically significant, t= -1.48, p = .14. These findings suggest that, while gender differences in motivation and self-efficacy are often highlighted in L2 research, their impact may vary based on specific learning contexts. Further research is needed, incorporating additional learner variables, to clarify the complex relationship between gender and L2 learning outcomes.

Abstract

Corpus linguistics is widely recognized as a branch of linguistics that analyzes and derives insights from authentic language usage, as it emphasizes on the use of large electronic collections of texts referred to as corpora to analyses real-world language use. The rise of corpus linguistics has closely followed advancements in computer storage capacity and processing speed. This study seeks to develop a nationwide English language training program for elementary school teachers. In the initial stage, training modules was designed for these teachers. The research employed the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate), utilizing interviews and questionnaires as data collection instruments, followed by the implementation of the training modules through direct instruction. The participants of this study were 19 elementary school teachers. The findings indicate that incorporating corpus linguistics into the training significantly reduced teachers' anxiety, enhanced their fluency, and improved their overall competency.  Future research should explore strategies to better support teachers’ professional language development and enhance English instruction in elementary schools.

Abstract

Guided Translation to Channel an Autistic Learner’s Potentials in L2 Writing: A Case Study. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate to what extent the use of guided translation from the Indonesian language into English could facilitate a student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to write a five-paragraph descriptive essay and expository essay in English. Methods: The study used observations on the participant’s learning behaviours and qualitative document analysis of the participant’s essays during the period of one semester. Findings: The use of guided translation helped the autistic learner, who typically had difficulty in language production both in L1 and L2, to write two essays in L2, whose overall quality analysed using the grading rubrics, was relatively the same as those of his developing peers, albeit the participant needed much more time. Conclusion: The finding suggested that autistic learners’ L1 could be capitalised to optimise their L2 learning. Keywords: Guided translation, Autism Spectrum Syndrome (ASD), L2 writing, case study.

Abstract

The present study intended to investigate second/foreign language (L2) learners’ level of instrumental motivation and the extent to which it predicted their self-efficacy. A survey method was used. It involved 144 Indonesian L2 learners of English from seven non-English departments through a convenience sampling. Through descriptive statistics, this study found that the instrumental motivation associated with future professions, academic success, and practical reasons were all high. Through bivariate linear regression, the study also found that learners’ instrumental motivation significantly predicted their self-efficacy, being able to explain 22.2% of its total variance. Implications include promoting in L2 instruction meaningful and relevant real-world tasks for learners whose majors are not English so that they are willing to invest more time and effort for L2 learning success and gradually build their self-efficacy. Examples of activities include using English for job opportunities, passing exams, or meeting language requirements. For classes with learners from various disciplines, teachers could also allow some freedom in choosing topics or tasks. This study might provide an overview of the relationship between instrumental motivation and self-efficacy, serving as a foundation for future research in this area. Limitations are stated alongside the suggested directions for relevant future studies in the field of instrumental motivation and self-efficacy.
