Abstract

The study investigates English as a second/foreign language (L2) learners' integrative motivation and its influence on their L2 speaking achievement. It employed a survey method and used speaking test scores to measure L2 speaking achievement. 188 Indonesian L2 learners from non-English departments participated in this study. This study was conducted to fill the gap in the motivation literature which underrecruited L2 learners from non-English departments and lacked quantitative studies involving a sufficient number of such participants in the Indonesian context. Using descriptive statistics on SPSS, the study found that learners generally reported a high level of integrative motivation. Their motivation to make friends with native English speakers was slightly higher than their motivation to learn about native speakers' cultures and to be involved in native speakers' communities. Through bivariate linear regression, the study found that learners' integrative motivation did not influence their L2 speaking achievement. These findings suggested despite integrative motivation being established in L2 literature, it did not always translate into motivated behaviours. This also calls for a re-examination of some pedagogical practices orienting towards native speakers and their cultures.

Abstract

The community service programme was designed and conducted in response to the need of the school partner, SMP Negeri 2 Purwosari Gunungkidul, to improve the motivation of the teachers to provide quality teaching for the low-motivated students. The programme lasted from February 2023 until November 2023 and was carried out in the form of training sessions and mentoring sessions. In total, there were four main activities in the programme: a motivation-building session intended to remind the teachers of the altruistic purposes of the profession, the writing-up of a module on how to utilise technological tools to motivate students, a training session on how to effectively use technological tools in the class instruction, and team-teaching sessions where we team-taught classes with selected three teachers using technological tools to engage students in class. Though throughout the programme there were challenges on our part and the teachers, generally the programme was a success. The programme evaluation suggested that teachers were generally satisfied with the programme and were more confident in using technology in teaching. Future similar programmes can be conducted with school partners sharing similar characteristics with those of our present school partner, to allow a higher quality of class instruction and eventually students' learning.

Abstract

This community service programme was conducted to raise awareness of the students of SMP Negeri 2 Purwosari Gunungkidul, the school partner, on the importance of pursuing higher education for their future. This programme was designed and conducted in response to the needs analysis suggesting that the students at the school had a low learning motivation and many of them did not have any plan to pursue education even to high school. The programme was conducted in the form of two consecutive motivation-building activities. The first was conducted in the form of a session with the school partner. The session aimed to provide a venue for the students to share their actual dreams and to make them realise that achieving those dreams was not an impossibility. The second activity was a campus visit where the students of SMPN 2 Purwosari visited Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana and joined fun learning sessions. It was aimed to give them a first-hand experience of the learning atmosphere at university so that they could be motivated to pursue their study even at the university level. They were also facilitated to realise the many scholarship opportunities available allowing them to study at university even if they came from financially struggling families. More such community service programmes should be conducted in other contexts bearing similar characteristics of students to allow for the younger generation to dream high and fight for it

Abstract

This study investigated the perspectives of Indonesian non-English major university students on factors that could affect their Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in English as a situational affective construct affected by various surrounding factors. Involving seven university student participants from three categories of WTC level (low, medium, and high) in individual semi-structured interviews, the study found seven emerging themes through Thematic Analysis. First, supportive peers were attributed to higher WTC and unsupportive peers to lower WTC. Second, learners, especially those with low WTC, reported higher WTC when they were among classmates they already know. Third, learners reported higher WTC when they perceived their teachers as caring, patient, and supportive, showing empathy of learners’ struggle. Fourth, learners who perceived themselves as having low self-perceived communication competence (SPCC) would likely have less WTC. Fifth and sixth, learners had higher WTC when they were to speak among few interlocutors and were given some time to prepare for their talking. These two were found especially among learners with low WTC. Seventh, learners with medium and high WTC was found to have pleasant and successful previous experiences in using English whilst those with low WTC reported upsetting experiences with the language. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications and suggestions for future studies were presented.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of a commercial textbook in English 1 Course at a university in South Korea seen from the framework of a sound curriculum development. Thus, the use of a commercial textbook was analysed and evaluated in relation to elements of curriculum development, such as needs analysis, learning aims, syllabus, methodology, and materials, as well as assessments. It was found that the use of the textbook drove what were taught in the whole course and thus practically “functioned” as its syllabus. However, it was found that the textbook could not facilitate learners to achieve all of the learning aims of English 1 course and it contributed to a disparity of learners' achievements across different classes. Furthermore, the reading assessment, derived from the textbook, was unable to assess learners’ achievements in all of the learning aims of English 1 course. Thus, it is suggested that teachers form informal workshop groups among teachers where they can share problems they face in class and possible solutions on how to address them in areas within their control. Based on the results of the study as well as the limitations, some recommendations for future studies are also presented. Keywords: commercial textbook, English 1 Course, curriculum, syllabus

Abstract

The community service programme was conducted in the form of a training on Basic English for teachers of SMA Bopkri 1 Yogyakarta. The training was conducted online through the Zoom platform and offline at the school. It was divided into ten sessions in the course of two months from 17 February 2022 up to 21 April 2022. Fifteen teachers participated in the training. The materials were understanding sermons, greetings and introduction, describing school facilities, doing school tours, describing school culture, hospitality, entertaining guests, doing small talks, and celebration of learning. The training was conducted in response to the need of the school to improve the English skills of the participants as the school had biweekly English sermons and the probability of having foreign guests. Generally, the training was a success and most of the participants who were adult learners and senior teachers with decades of teaching experiences demonstrated high motivation to learn despite the challenges. The use of three languages: Indonesian, Javanese, and English and the minimum use of technological tools were found to positively affect the participants’ motivation and learning in general. Flexibility in instructional process and relevance of materials were also key factors for success.

Abstract

This community service activity was conducted in the form of online training, focusing on using English for designing virtual travel videos. Participants of this nation-wide training are 25 certified tour guides from various regions in Indonesia, out of 180 registrants. With Atourin as the training partner, the training aimed to facilitate the tour guide participants to be able to make virtual tour videos in English to promote tourism destinations to foreigners who would enjoy them from their homes during the Covid-19 pandemic. The training was conducted for two months in seven meetings via the Zoom platform with each meeting lasting for 120 minutes. At the end of the training, the participants were able to make virtual travel videos promoting tourism destinations in their respective areas. As seen from the participants’ enthusiasm for learning and their activeness in each meeting, it could be concluded that the training was a success. The training refreshed the tour guide participants’ English and improved their mastery before coming back to the tourism industry post-pandemic. Evaluation of the overall programme was conducted as an effort to improve the quality of a similar programme in the future, including conducting hybrid activities synchronously combining offline and online modes, allowing flexibility where participants can choose the mode with which they are more convenient.
