This study seeks to investigate second/foreign language (L2) reticence among students taking an online public speaking class at an English Language Education Department in Java, Indonesia. These participants were selected because based on a preceding observational study, L2 reticence was present among these target participants in the observed public speaking class. More specifically, the present study intends to discover the possible causes of L2 reticence and the possible strategies to alleviate it. To achieve this goal, four reticent students, identified based on the observation data from the preceding study, as well as two teachers who taught the class, were individually interviewed. The interview data were analysed using Thematic Analysis. The results suggested the student participants' beliefs that low confidence levels and fear of possible embarrassment were major causes of L2 reticence. The teacher participants, furthermore, believed that constantly monitored group discussions and teacher psychological support could lessen students' L2 reticence. Implications include setting clear expectations and assigning roles to each student to keep students accountable. Teachers should also maintain a democratic classroom environment where students can feel more at ease in expressing their thoughts.

This community service programme was conducted in the form of an English communication empowerment programme for employees of OHANA, a disability rights organisation based in Yogyakarta. The programme consisted of ten 90-minute meetings conducted from early October 2022 up to mid-November 2022. The materials of this training included self-introduction, introducing others, making small talks with a wide range of topics, as well as job descriptions and job responsibilities. The programme was conducted in response to the need for OHANA employees to make more effective communications with foreign partners concerning their jobs as advocates of the rights of women and persons with disability. Despite the low attendance rate in some of the meetings due to the tight schedules of the OHANA employees in providing services to the community, the language empowerment programme can be considered successful seen from the engagement of the attending participants and the generally positive feedback from them. Several conclusions and recommendations are stated considering the degree of success of this programme for the betterment of future similar programmes.

The present study was conducted to find out Indonesian English as a Second/Foreign Language (L2) learners' attitudes towards cheating (AtC) in online English classes, as well as the possible influence of the combination of three variables, which are their AtC, absenteeism, and gender, on their L2 achievement as measured with their final grades. The study employed a survey method and was conducted by distributing an online questionnaire. In total, 164 Indonesian learners from various non-English departments at a university in Java participated in the study. Through descriptive statistics, it was found that generally learners reported their negative AtC in English class, suggesting disapproval towards cheating. Through multiple regression analysis, the study further found that the combination of learners AtC, absenteeism, and gender significantly influenced their L2 achievement, and the overall model could predict 34.5% of the total variance in L2 achievement. However, based on the beta coefficient of the three variables, only learners absenteeism and gender significantly affected their L2 achievement. As learners had higher absenteeism, they obtained lower L2 achievement. From a t-test analysis, female learners were found to have significantly better L2 achievement than their male counterparts. While the findings on the influence of absenteeism on L2 achievement generally conformed to literature in the field, the findings on the influence of AtC and gender on L2 achievement may suggest that further explorations may be necessary.

The self-efficacy (SE) of second or foreign language (L2) learners, or their belief in their ability to successfully carry out language tasks, can affect their communication behaviours and learning outcomes. This study seeks to explore L2 learners’ SE levels in listening, reading, writing, and speaking, and to determine whether there are significant differences in SE across these four skills. A survey method was used, involving 144 Indonesian L2 learners from non-English departments. The survey included Likert-scale items measuring SE in the four language skills. Descriptive statistics revealed that learners had moderate-to-high SE in reading, listening, and writing, while reporting a higher level of SE in speaking. The mean scores range from 3.2 to 4.6 on a 1-5 scale. Paired-sample t-tests showed that speaking SE was significantly greater than that of reading, listening, and writing, whilst no significant differences were found among the SE of the latter three skills. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teachers promote more balanced development across all four language skills in integrated-skill classes where teachers build learners’ confidence in skills they feel less capable of. Potential contributions include mapping learners’ perceived strengths and weaknesses in L2 learning.

The present quantitative study was conducted to investigate Indonesian high school English teachers’ attitudes towards the uses of instructional technology (IT) during the Covid-19 pandemic-driven online learning. The study used a survey method of distributing an online questionnaire several months into the Covid-19 pandemic, within July 2020. 114 Indonesian high school English teachers participated in the study. It found that the teacher participants generally had positive attitudes towards the uses of IT in English online classes. They believed that IT improved teacher-student relationships, creativity, and innovation, as well as brought positive changes towards their teaching. However, more than half of them also reported that they had more failures than success stories when using IT during the pandemic. They did not believe that IT made learning more effective either. These seemingly ambivalent attitudes may be attributed to the sudden changes from the face-to-face mode of instruction to the online one during the pandemic leading to the unpreparedness of all parties involved including teachers. Based on the findings, implications and contributions are stated alongside the possible limitations and directions for future studies. This study investigated undergraduate non-English major university students’ auditory and kinaesthetic learning styles and their relationships to second language (L2) achievement in English. It was conducted to resolve the conflicting findings in the literature on the directions and strength of the relationships between learners’ learning styles and their achievements and to investigate the field in relatively under-researched Indonesian participants. The study used a survey as the method of data collection and found out that learners used auditory slightly more dominantly from kinaesthetic, yet both learning styles were merely used at low to moderate levels. The study further found very weak and statistically not significant associations between these learning styles and L2 achievements, suggesting that contrary to various learning theories highlighting the importance of learners’ learning styles in L2 learning, these learning styles may not be an important determinant of L2 achievement. Based on the findings, possible future studies are suggested concerning the implications, contributions, and limitations of the study.

The present study was conducted to investigate the possible interaction between the second language (L2) learners' listening anxiety and their use of socio-affective listening strategies (SALS). The participants of this study were 74 university learners from non-English departments at a university in Java, Indonesia. The study used the survey method of distributing Google Form questionnaires. Through descriptive statistics, the study found that generally, learner participants had a medium level of listening anxiety. The participants also reported a high level of SALS. Through correlation formula, the study further found that learners’ use of SALS correlated negatively with their listening anxiety. It indicated that the more they used SALS, the lower their listening anxiety tended to be. The correlation was not significant. Based on the findings of the study, several pedagogical implications were suggested. This included promoting more learner-centred activities where learners could develop their socio-affective strategies and giving emphasis on overall comprehension rather than specific grammatical aspects in L2 listening activities. Possible directions for future studies were also suggested concerning the study's findings and possible limitations.

For decades, language anxiety has been a popular research topic in the field of language learning and studies suggested that learners' second/foreign (L2) writing anxiety, one of the anxiety constructs, negatively affected learners' L2 writing achievement. This study aimed to investigate the thesis writing anxiety of Indonesian pre-service English teachers working on their theses in the final semesters of their study. The participants of this study were 105 pre-service teacher participants from ten universities across six different provinces in Indonesia. The study employed an online survey as the method of data collection. It found that generally, the participants had a moderate level of thesis writing anxiety. The detailed findings were further elaborated under four categories: “Difficulty in Grammar and Writing Anxiety”, “Negative Feelings when Writing a Thesis in English”, “Positive Feelings when Writing a Thesis in English”, and “Degree of Influence of Advisors and Peers to Writing Anxiety”. Based on the findings, possible contributions, implications, and limitations are suggested alongside suggested directions for future studies.

The present study intends to investigate the attitudes of English department students on the use of TikTok for English vocabulary learning. The participants of this study were 116 Indonesian students from the English Language Education and English Letters Departments from 26 different universities in 10 provinces. This study employed an online survey as the method of collecting data. It found that generally, the participants reported highly positive attitudes towards using TikTok for learning vocabulary. However, they seemed to have ambivalent attitudes towards the effectiveness of using the platform for vocabulary learning, perhaps attributed to the default nature of TikTok as a social media rather than a learning media. Informed by the findings, the study suggested teachers incorporate TikTok in skill-based and vocabulary-building classes in the first semesters of English department curricula. Limitations and contributions of this study are stated along with the suggested direction of future relevant studies in the field.
