Abstract

Introduction:  This study aimed to explore DCNs’ perceived knowledge acquisition in older adult patients with dementia in acute-care hospitals. Methods: The study used qualitative methods, with 14 Japanese DCNs involved in the snowball sampling method. Face-to-face interviews were conducted between June and December 2016 by the principal investigator. A qualitative content analysis was used in this study. The study results were divided into nine categories and 31 sub-categories. Results: This study highlights the process through which DCNs in acute-care hospitals acquire expertise in caring for older adults with dementia. Initially, DCNs faced dilemmas between patients’ resistance to treatment and their professional priorities, leading to emotional and cognitive shifts that motivated them to seek specialized knowledge and refine their care methods. By reflecting on their experiences, integrating patient-centered approaches, and sharing insights with team members, DCNs deepened their understanding, adapted care strategies, and enhanced their clinical capacity to meet patients' needs effectively. Conclusions: Nurses should provide appropriate training before taking care of the patients. Knowledge should be combined with patient’s problems and behavior. Thus, nurses become more flexible in adapting to patients with dementia. These findings emphasize the importance of fostering reflective practices and educational interventions to enhance DCNs’ expertise, enabling them to provide patient-centered care and improve outcomes for older adults with dementia.

Abstract

Students with disabilities face challenges in learning, particularly due to the limited use of instructional media and low social skills, including politeness, empathy, self-confidence, and social awareness. This study aims to transform essential materials (sacred days, holy figures, sacred places) using cartoon-based media to address issues such as multi-grade teaching and students' suboptimal social skills, which are categorized as poor. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation as methods. A total 40 students with special needs were participated. The findings indicate that integrating cartoon-based media in teaching, combined with humanistic strategies, methods, and approaches, effectively bridges the gap for students with disabilities, enabling them to develop social skills such as politeness, empathy, self-confidence, and social awareness. However, challenges arise from the continuous use of cartoon media, which can lead to monotony. To overcome these obstacles, teachers employed strategies such as incorporating ice-breaking activities, simple mindfulness-based yoga exercises, singing, and watching cartoons depicting religious celebrations. Innovative multimedia-based teaching methods, individualized instruction, and a human-centered paradigm shift were shown to significantly enhance the abilities of students with special needs. The findings imply that the use of instructional media can ease the burden on teachers, particularly those with limited sign language skills, while increasing student engagement and enthusiasm for learning. In conclusion, students with disabilities greatly benefit from tangible objects, the use of instructional media, individual and humanistic approaches, and the development of habitual learning practices.

Abstract

Recovery-oriented nursing services (RONS) have emerged as a significant paradigm in the treatment of schizophrenia. Nevertheless, the number of validated instruments available to assess patient utilization of these services is insufficient. This study aimed to develop and validate the Recovery-Oriented Nursing Services Utilization (RONSU) scale. A cross-sectional study was conducted to develop the scale for adults aged 18 and older who older residing in the community who have schizophrenia, between March and May 2023. Participants from six hospitals had participated in outpatient mental health nursing for at least eighteen months following discharge. The scale development followed the seven-step process outlined by DeVellis and Thorpe. An exploratory factor analysis conducted on 110 samples identified a four-factor structure, comprising the following components: social skill training, indirect nursing care management, therapeutic nurse‒patient relationships, and coping skill training. With the assistance of 231 participants and confirmatory factor analysis, the RONSU was refined to 32 items across the four dimensions. The construct's validity and reliability were confirmed, as the fit indices and composite reliability fell within acceptable bounds. The RONSU scale contributes in both scholarly and clinical spheres, enhancing the understanding and application of recovery-oriented nursing services for individuals with schizophrenia

Abstract

This study aimed to assess patient satisfaction with pharmaceutical services and examine related factors at government medical institutions in Al-Buaraimi Governorate. A cross-sectional design using a standardized self-administered questionnaire was applied. A total of 371 patients were selected through random sampling. The questionnaire covered five domains: sociodemographic characteristics, location, supply, pharmacist’s attitude, and promptness. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results of the respondents, 55.8% were male, with a mean age of 39.6 years. Overall, 75.27% were satisfied with pharmaceutical services. Highest mean scores were reported for “Pharmacist showed interest in helping me obtain medication” and “Pharmacist showed respect” (4.73), followed by “Received medication within a reasonable time” (4.71) and “Waiting time acceptable considering prescription quantity” (4.69). More than three-quarters (78.7%) used daily medications. Patients visited pharmacies an average of three times annually (SD ±1.372) and received about four items per visit (SD ±1.994). Dispensing took approximately three minutes (SD ±1.213). Four variables showed significant correlation with satisfaction, one showed weak correlation, and one showed no association (p < 0.05). Patient satisfaction with pharmaceutical services was generally high, reflecting the quality of care provided. However, regular audits are recommended to enhance satisfaction and support continuous quality improvement, particularly for national accreditation processes. Strengthening communication between pharmacies and government institutions is also essential to improve services and prevent drug-related issues.

Abstract

Background: First-line Nurse Managers (FLNMs) occupy pivotal positions within healthcare systems and are responsible for various administrative and caregiving functions. While FLNMs are integral to efficient healthcare services, their competencies and the factors influencing them still need to be explored in Jordan. In light of the need for more research on FLNM competencies in Jordan, this study is paramount for advancing healthcare in the country.Purpose: This study aimed to analyze FLNM competence and its influencing factors within the unique context of Jordan’s healthcare system. Methods: As a cross-sectional study, this research leveraged online platforms to distribute questionnaires to 130 FLNMs across three public hospitals in Jordan’s central region using a random sampling method. Univariate analysis comprised numerical data (Mean, median, mode, SD) and categorical data (percentage and proportion). Pearson, independent t-test, and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Results: Based on responses from 130 FLNMs, the study’s results demonstrate their average age to be approximately 37.8 years, with a significant proportion holding master’s degrees, indicating a highly educated cohort. Notably, many FLNMs are charge nurses, reflecting their extensive experience and commitment to enhancing their leadership competencies. The study found no significant correlation between age and FLNM competencies, suggesting that competence is not solely contingent upon years of experience or age (p>0.05). The research revealed that the highest to the lowest significance in FLNM performance were leadership training (b=21.15, 95%CI=7.70-34.60, p=0.002), gender-based disparities (b=16.50, 95%CI=4.41-28.58, p=0.008) and social status (b=7.86, 95%CI=1.13-14.60, p=0.02), respectively. Conclusion: FLNMs exhibit high competence, influenced by leadership training, gender disparities, and social status. The research highlights the need for tailored training and support programs to improve the competencies of FLNMs in Jordan’s healthcare system, highlighting gender-based differences and the need for personalized healthcare management strategies to improve healthcare quality.

Abstract

Introduction: to evaluate problems and factors related to quality of life (QoL) for adult family caregivers (FCGs) of patients with dementia. Methods: The study used a systematic review method with the guidelines of PRISMA 2020 and registered in PROSPERO CRD42023464726. The review focused on adult FCGs for people with dementia in the home setting. The literature was searched from four databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PubMed. This systematic review examined a subset of fifty-two out of a total of 2,263.  The study used a narrative synthesis method to analyze the study. Results: The result showed that the severity of a patient with dementia's condition had an essential role in the patient's state. It impacted the caregiver's condition indirectly. Personal strategies (coping, resilience, sense of coherence, and expressed emotion) had an essential role in the caregiver situation. A maladaptive strategy would increase the stress of the caregivers and lead to a burden and depression. Those conditions of the caregiver would affect their QoL. Conclusions: Caring for patients with dementia is a huge psychological distress and burden on FCGs, which may negatively affect their quality of life in many aspects. Therefore, FCGs need education and support programs to maintain their overall aspect of quality of life and enable them to produce care for loved people.

Abstract

One of the indicators of service quality at the hospital is Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) that can be prevented by hand hygiene, which is a procedure for cleaning hands with soap water, or alcohol-based liquids. This study aimed to identify the effect of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) training on the level of knowledge and compliance of five moments for hand hygiene in nurses at the Dharma Yadnya Hospital in Denpasar. This study used a pre-experimental one-group pre-post test without a control group design. The number of samples was 42 nurses with purposive sampling techniques that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that before training 26 nurses (61.9%) had a good level of knowledge, and after training, 41 nurses (97.6%) had good knowledge. With regard to compliance with five moments for hand hygiene, before training 22 nurses (52.4%) were not compliant, and after training 29 nurses (69%) imperfectly adhered to the procedure. Mandatory training in IPC influences the level of knowledge and adherence to the five moments for hand hygiene among nurses. Suggestions for hospitals to provide continuity of education related to IPC, monitor nurses' compliance behaviors of the five moments for hand hygiene, either by direct observation or electronically, and provide rewards and punishments for behavioral evaluations.
