Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the model of political communication in the Indonesian parliament. The phenomenon of political communication using 'violence', occurred in Indonesian parliament period 1999-2004. This research was conducted with qualitative analysis, by developing interactionist theory, constructive, symbolic interaction in the political sphere. The results found that political communication in Indonesian parliament cannot be conceived as direct communication because the communication is interactional and transactional. Therefore, every political message is ultimately between interests and disagreements. It can build a conceptual model in which ‘violence’ in the delivery of political messages physically or psychologically occurs on the ‘front stage', 'middle stage’ and ‘backstage’.

Abstract

This article provides an overview of how group communication among Punguan Raja Sonang members, namely the association of students with Batak ethnic backgrounds from the clans of Gultom, Samosir, Sitinjak, Pakpahan and Harianja at the University of Bengkulu. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach with data collection methods by observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, the results show that the members of Punguan Raja Sonang need the closest people that can help them get to know their fellow Bataks in a clan. The same background, area of origin, belief, and language make the members of Punguan Raja Sonang at the University of Bengkulu have cohesiveness or strength to remain in the clan group. In addition, their sense of Batakness is nurtured through group communication, although there are indications that some group members are colonized by certain Batak character stereotypes, which makes them participate in prejudging other group members who have anomalous characters. Above all, a close togetherness among them can create a high sense of solidarity both with older members and with young peers. To cite this article (7th APA style): Ningrum, D. P. & Arrianie, L. Abstract

After the Reform Era's birth in 1998, following the New Order regime's downfall that had controlled Indonesian politics for 32 years, two shows dominate the Indonesian political stage: freedom and violence. Politicians manage their roles on the front-stage, middle-stage, and backstage with the different political communication styles from those in the New Order era. Today, political communications in the Parliament tend to be more fluid as well as interactional, circular, convergent, and even transactional instead of linear, where political communicators, politicians, activists, professionals, and people deliver their aspirations to the political stage and political journalists in more open political message exchanges. All politicians should be wise in presenting their roles in the political stage shows, and social media that functions as the middle stage for political shows, which they should manage well to align political shows with political stages.
