Abstract

The live streaming phenomenon on TikTok has created a new form of interaction between content creators and viewers, requiring hosts to establish a strong emotional connection within a short timeframe. This issue is significant because emotional connection serves as a key factor in maintaining viewer engagement and loyalty in highly competitive digital environments. This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by TikTok live hosts to build emotional connections with their audiences and sustain active participation during live sessions. A descriptive qualitative research method was used, involving a literature review that analyzed various academic sources regarding digital communication and social media. Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory was applied to understand how hosts perform on the "front stage" to create a desired impression and manage audience perceptions. The findings indicate that TikTok live hosts utilize various strategies such as personalizing interactions, emotional storytelling, real-time responsiveness, and virtual community building to foster emotional connections. These strategies have proven effective in cultivating a sense of closeness, strengthening audience engagement, and enhancing long-term viewer loyalty and participation on the platform.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed business practices worldwide, yet significant disparities remain in digital access and literacy, particularly among women entrepreneurs in urban Indonesia. This study examines the challenges faced by women-owned Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in South Jakarta, highlighting the persistent gender and digital gaps that hinder inclusive economic development. Utilizing a combination of qualitative methods, including focus group discussions and in-depth interviews, the research investigates the barriers to digital adoption, such as limited digital literacy, cultural norms, and infrastructural constraints. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and principles of inclusive development, the study emphasizes the importance of context-specific communication strategies and community-driven solutions to foster empowerment and gender equity in digital transformation. Findings reveal that while government initiatives like the Jakpreneur program have provided essential training and resources, a gap persists in tailored, participatory approaches that address women’s unique needs and socio-cultural realities. The research advocates for strengthening community-based digital literacy programs, peer learning models, and mentorship schemes that leverage local knowledge and social networks. By bridging the digital divide, these strategies aim to bolster women entrepreneurs’ capacity to leverage digital platforms, expand market access, and sustain business growth. Ultimately, promoting inclusive development communication is vital for transforming digital inclusion from mere policy rhetoric into tangible empowerment outcomes, ensuring that women entrepreneurs in Jakarta Selatan are active agents in Indonesia’s digital economy.

Abstract

In the increasingly multicultural landscape of Indonesia, traditional performing arts are not merely forms of entertainment but serve as vital conduits for intercultural communication. Specifically, Wayang Orang Betawi is a traditional performing art that functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium of cultural communication within Jakarta’s multicultural society. The play Udel Jadi Raja represents local cultural expression embedded with moral values, humour and social symbolism. This study examines how Wayang Orang Betawi serves as a medium for cross-cultural meaning exchange through local expression in the play. While previous scholarship has largely focused on the aesthetic preservation or linguistic vitality of Betawi arts, this study establishes novelty by positioning Wayang Orang Betawi as a medium of cross-cultural meaning exchange. Existing literature often overlooks the communicative function of these performances in mediating social conflict within heterogeneous urban settings. Consequently, the role of traditional humour and symbolism as mechanisms for social cohesion remains underexplored. Specifically, this study analyses how contextual humour functions as intercultural competence and how leadership symbolism conveys egalitarian values to diverse audiences. This study employed a qualitative approach using performance observation, documentation studies and descriptive analysis. Data were analysed by interpreting narrative elements, dialogues, cultural symbols and communication styles presented in Wayang Orang Betawi though the play Udel Jadi Raja. The finding indicate that Udel Jadi Raja facilitates cross-cultural meaning exchange by using Betawi language, distinctive humour and local cultural symbols. The transformation of the character Udel reflects universal values such as honesty, justice, equality and ethical leadership that easy to understand from audiences in diverse cultural backgrounds. Wayang Orang Betawi in Udel Jadi Raja functions as an educational and reflective medium that bridges cultural differences. This performance contributes to strengthening local cultural identity while conveying universal values within a multicultural social context.
