Abstract

This article delves into the sociological implications of the Walla app for the gay community in Medan, highlighting how digital technology facilitates identity formation and social interaction amidst societal stigma and discrimination. Employing a qualitative research methodology with virtual ethnography, the study gathers data through participant observation, field notes, a literature review, and interviews. Findings reveal that Walla is pivotal in providing a safe space for gays to express themselves and build supportive networks, partly due to the lack of family and societal support for their sexual orientation and the user-friendly nature of the app. This study underscores the transformative role of social media in enabling gay individuals in Medan to articulate and negotiate their identities, thereby contributing to our sociological understanding of digital spaces as venues for community building and personal expression. This research highlights the significant role of Walla in fostering a sense of community and visibility for gays in Indonesia, facilitating more authentic self-representation and interaction without fear of stigma.

Abstract

The problem of household waste management in Sihite II Village has become an environmental issue impacting public health and the aesthetics of the area. Lack of public awareness of waste sorting and limited waste management facilities lead to the annual accumulation of plastic and organic waste. This Community Service Program (KKN) aims to provide education and direct implementation of waste management through the creation of ecobricks and biopore infiltration holes as an environmental solution and creative economic opportunity. The implementation method uses a community empowerment approach that includes outreach, training, practice, and evaluation. Results indicate that the implementation of ecobricks can reduce the volume of plastic waste by an average of 30–48% per household, while the application of biopores reduces organic waste by up to 40% and produces organic fertilizer. Economically, ecobricks have the potential to become a valuable product, selling for Rp3,500–Rp7,000 per unit, and can be used to make furniture or crafts with higher economic value. This program demonstrates that community empowerment-based waste management not only has an environmental impact but also opens up sustainable creative economic opportunities for the people of Sihite II Village.

Abstract

This article examines the process of religious identity negotiation undertaken by Salafi women in relation to their need for public space at the Abu Bakar Shiddiq Mosque in Deli Serdang. It highlights how religious groups known for their strict understanding of women's roles in the domestic sphere often face social challenges due to their presence in public spaces. Their involvement in public spaces continues through study groups, children's education, and social activities. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, collecting data through participatory observation, field notes, literature review, and interviews. The findings show that Salafi women negotiate their identity by adhering to the principles of manhaj, such as wearing sharia-compliant clothing, regulating the timing of activities, and limiting interaction with non-mahram men. This study emphasizes that the mosque not only functions as a center of worship but also as a social arena that allows Salafi women to maintain their religious identity, thereby contributing to the study of the sociology of religion by highlighting that Salafi women are not only passive but also actively negotiate to bridge religious values and social space needs.
