Abstract

In Ethiopia, a great variety of diseases affects faba bean production. However, gall forming faba bean new disease has become a very serious disease that seriously affected faba beans producing areas of Wollo. This prescalling up of integrated faba bean gall technology has been conducted at Meket and Wadla woredas of north Wollo in 2017/18 to create wider demand on the management of gall disease and to enhance integrated gall disease management  technology dissemination. The study areas were selected purposively due to high infestation of the disease. A total of 32 farmers were selected based on a voluntary base. Adjacent farms of 5.7 ha at Wadla and 3 ha at Meket was selected and clustered accordingly. Integrated disease management i.e seed dressing with 300 gm Baylaton/100Kg seed, improved varieties and hand weeding were applied as a package for the control of the disease. Dosha with chemical gave an average gain yield of 2.2 tons/ha at Meket whereas Wolki with chemical gave an average grain yield of 2.5 tons/ha at Wadla woreda. However, the local variety with farmers’ practice gave an average grain yield of 100 kg/ha and 900 kg/ha at Wadla and Meket woredas respectively. The result of economic analysis also indicate that the technology is by far advantageous than the local variety and practice. So, the technology should be further disseminated to other hot spot areas of faba bean gall diseases.

Abstract

Abstract

Batur Forest is a volcanic area that was an ex-volcanic eruption. Efforts to rehabilitate forests with critical land were by planting Eucalyptus urophylla. The aim of the study was to examine the adaptation of Eucalyptus urophylla species in critical areas of former volcanic eruptions that were dominated by hard rocks. The research was done for a year (2019-2020). The method used was a species test with a permanent block plot design from 4 age levels, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, and 15 years. The study results showed growth of 1.02 cm in diameter and 1.10 m in height (1 year), 6.50 cm in diameter and 11.00 m in height (5 years), 13.25 cm in diameter and 18.40 m in height (10 years), and a diameter of 20.48 cm and a height of 23.00 m (15 years). Eucalyptus urophylla experienced the best tree diameter growth after 10 years old and on the contrary experienced a decrease in height. The Eucalyptus urophylla level of adaptation and suitability of volcanic soils with low fertility and rocky soil is a recommendation to increase the quantity of this species of planting. So that the forest succession from rocky thickets to tree vegetation is faster than natural processes. Eucalyptus urophylla species is one of the flora that makes up the savanna forest ecosystem and volcanic critical land in eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

The study was conducted in 2019/2020 for two years in Habru, Kobo, and Dawa Chefa districts of the Eastern Amhara with the main objectives of evaluating and validating the productivity, evaluating economic feasibility and selecting the best performing sowing method and seed rate of tef technologies under farmers condition. The districts were selected based on their representativeness for the growth of tef. Three treatments were used for the study namely row planting with 5kg.ha-1, row planting with 10kg.ha-1, and hand broadcasting methods. Tef (Zoble variety) was used for the study purpose. Based on the data obtained, the highest yield was obtained from the hand broadcasting (25kg.ha-1) and the lowest yield was from the row planting (5kg.ha-1). The mean yield of tef from the hand broadcasting (25kg.ha-1) was 16.5% higher than the row planting (5kg.ha-1). Similarly, the labor utilization has increased from hand broadcasting 25kg.ha-1to row planting of (5kg.ha-1) and 10kg.ha-1. The labor cost for row plantings of tef was also higher, whereas the hand broadcasting (25kg.ha-1) consumed the least labor. This study therefore has proved that hand broadcasting is both high yielder and economically feasible in the Eastern Amhara. In addition to this, the study suggests that there should be additional seed rate study on broadcasting In order to gain optimum tef yield with feasible economic advantage.

Abstract

This study was proposed to analyze farmers’ varietal perception of bread wheat. From Meket district, four kebeles were randomly selected to achieve the above objective. The study uses cross-sectional data collected from randomly selected 214 farming households through an interview schedule. Fourteen Likert items were included in two categories as advantages and disadvantages of the technology.  Five-point Likert scale was used to analyze varietal perceptions. One-way ANOVA was employed for testing the overall mean differences among bread wheat technology adoption categories. In addition, the Relative Importance Index (RII) was used to analyze item relative importance. Farmers supported improved bread wheat varieties for specific attributes such as, high marketability, early maturity, better grain yield, grain color, food quality, and storability were found to be taking the average score of 4.43, 4.43, 4.33, 4.01, 3.85, 3.45, and 3.26, respectively. Whereas, improved bread wheat varieties were perceived to be unsuitable for shattering problems, straw quality, and low yield performances in poor soil types. Therefore, breeding objectives should be oriented towards improving bread wheat variety traits related to shattering and straw quality. Limitation of labor is one of the major reasons for the low adoption rate of row planting. Hence, machinery should be carried out to promote row planting of bread wheat. Moreover, the study indicates the need to entertain farmers’ perception of bread wheat technologies for creating wider adoption.

Abstract

The embryonic type of mango accession needs to be known because it has an important role in its development, especially in the propagation of mango plants. Polyembryonic mango cultivars have the potential to produce zygotic embryos that can show morphological and genetic diversity. Research with the aim of knowing the embryonic type of Bali landraces mango germplasm as the basis for its development, especially in selecting cultivars that have potential as rootstocks, was carried out in Banyuning Village, Singaraja in July-September 2022. A total of 34 landraces accessions and 10 non-landraces Bali came from Buleleng, Karangasem, Klungkung and Badung districts were used as research materials, involving 10 seeds per accession each. The seeds were sown in polybags filled with river sand. Germinated seeds were removed from the seedling, the number of sprouts that grew on each seed was counted. The results showed that there were monoembryonic and polyembryonic types of Bali landraces accessions. A total of 32 accessions or 94.12% of Bali landraces accessions showed the polyembryonic type, and 2 landraces accessions, namely Pakel Sibetan and Pakel Sulangai showed monoembryonic. Introduced accessions, such as Brazil, Parkit, Shaigon, and Apel are classified as monoembryonic.INTISARITipe embrioni aksesi mangga perlu diketahui karena memiliki peran penting dalam pengembangannya, khususnya dalam perbanyakan tanaman mangga. Abstract

Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L.) is an important fruit produced and consumed worldwide and it’s an excellent source of vitamin C. However, citrus industry in Ethiopia is at an infant stage; which is particularly due to shortage of improved and adapted cultivars and their distribution. Considering these, six sweet orange cultivars were evaluated to select adapted, high yielding and quality cultivar/s. Different growth, phenological, yield and yield component data were collected and analyzed using SAS. Days to maturity was also highly significantly (p<0.01)) affected by cultivars in 2017 cropping year. Fruit weight without rind (flesh weight) and juice weight were highly significantly (p<0.05) affected by cultivars in 2018 harvesting year. Marketable yield, unmarketable yield, and total yield tree-1 were significantly affected by cultivars in both 2017 and 2018 harvesting year. O. Valencia is late matured cultivars which took 1622 days from planting to first harvest. While, P.W.N. is early matured cultivars with average number of days of 1104 from planting to first harvest. In 2017, Hamlin, gave the highest marketable fruit yield tree-1 (68.61 kg) and total yield tree-1 (68.94kg). Jaffa gave significantly the maximum marketable fruit yield tree-1 (197.24 kg) and total yield tree-1 (198.81 kg) in 2018 cropping year. In 2019 harvesting year, Hamlin gave the highest marketable (63.3 kg) and total (64.02 kg) fruit yield tree-1. In average Jaffa and Hamlin gave the maximum marketable fruit yield tree-1 from the three consecutive harvesting years with mean value of 95.38 kg and 72.24 kg respectively. So, in Raya Azebo, and other areas having similar agro-ecologies Jaffa and Hamlin cultivars are recommended. Further, studying the nutritional content and water requirements of these cultivars are suggested.
