Abstract

The transformation of space in postcolonial cities extends beyond the restoration of old buildings; it involves cultural practices that reshape collective memory and identity. Through adaptive reuse, colonial-era heritage spaces are revitalised as social hubs. This study examines Post Kantoor cafe, a former colonial post office turned into a “third place” within urban spatial culture. Using qualitative methods—visual observation, spatial documentation, and a literature review—the study finds that nostalgic aesthetics, evident in antique artefacts, colonial atmospheres, and curated visuals, foster emotional connections across generations and social classes. More than a site of consumption, the cafe becomes a space for dialogue, cultural exchange, and reinterpretation of history. These findings show that adaptive reuse in postcolonial contexts can produce inclusive, meaningful spaces rich in cultural symbolism.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to examine how modern Wayang Kulit performances reconstruct the narrative of Draupadi and to what extent artistic freedom is used to challenge or uphold traditional gender morality. The study focuses on a performance of Drupadi by the female dalang (puppeteer) Nyi Nia Dwi Raharjo, published in 2021, as a representative example of how a new generation of artists renegotiates the roles and agency of female characters in Javanese traditional performing arts. This research employs a literature review, textual analysis, and visual analysis to examine the differences between the epic Mahabharata narrative and its adapted form in this performance. The analysis focuses on narrative elements, dialogue, janturan (sung narration), and the dalang’s utterances that indicate a reconstruction of values, whether reinforcing traditional gender biases or offering a new, more critical reading of gender injustice. The results show that this performance not only functions as a preservation of tradition but also as a space for ethical negotiation. Through creative interpretation, the female dalang is able to present subtle resistance to patriarchal gender norms, while also revealing the limits of artistic freedom when confronted with the established conventions of tradition. These findings demonstrate the potential of wayang as a medium for social reflection and value transformation in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study examines how the Instagram account @tamansarimelawan plays a significant role in preserving collective memory and the identity of marginalized groups through digital archives. In the context of the Taman Sari urban village community, which resisted land eviction for the construction of row houses in Bandung, this research explores how Instagram as a social media platform contributes to the formation and maintenance of collective memory and community identity. Using content analysis of the @tamansarimelawan account, the study investigates the mechanisms through which social media functions as a digital repository, a medium for fostering a sense of belonging and continuity, and as a form of resistance among community members. The study employs Halbwach’s (1992) concept of collective memory to emphasize how collective memory is constructed and maintained within a community. Halbwach (1992) argues that memory is not only an individual phenomenon but also a collective one shaped by social context and interactions. This perspective is highly relevant for understanding how the @tamansarimelawan account documents and preserves the collective memory of eviction events experienced by the Taman Sari community. The account is analyzed through its visual content and narrative construction, including the documentation of photos, videos, and hashtags. These elements are examined to understand how digital archives contribute to the formation of a resistance identity and political awareness among both the community and the account’s followers. The posts shared on the account serve not only as records of events occurring during the eviction period but also as a medium to express grievances, aspirations, and collective solidarity among residents. The digital archiving conducted by @tamansarimelawan serves a dual function: it facilitates a voice for resistance and the building of solidarity within the community, while simultaneously documenting and broadcasting eviction events to a broader audience. This demonstrates that social media, through platforms like Instagram, can be a powerful tool for preserving the collective memory and identity of marginalized communities.
