Abstract

Reading instruction plays a fundamental role in shaping students' academic success, particularly in culturally diverse contexts. In Islamic educational institutions, there is a critical need for materials that resonate with students' cultural and religious backgrounds. This study aimed to develop a culturally responsive reading instructional module tailored to the specific needs of first-grade students at an Islamic Junior High School in Mataram, Indonesia. Grounded in constructivist learning theory, which emphasizes the importance of contextual relevance in education, the study integrates Islamic cultural and religious themes to foster student engagement and improve reading comprehension. A mixed-methods approach was utilized, involving surveys, interviews, and pre- and post-assessments. The study included 60 first-grade students and their teachers. The results demonstrated significant improvements in students’ reading comprehension and engagement. The mean test scores increased notably, and students expressed higher levels of enjoyment with the culturally aligned materials. These findings underscore the importance of integrating cultural and religious content into instructional materials, creating more inclusive and effective educational experiences. The study offers practical insights for educators in similar settings, highlighting the potential of culturally responsive pedagogy to bridge the gap between students' home and school environments, while also fostering a deeper appreciation of their cultural heritage. This contribution provides valuable guidance for the future development of culturally tailored educational strategies in Islamic contexts.

Abstract

The growth of tourist attractions in the Sekotong Barat Subdistrict needs a boost in human resources, particularly in English proficiency. As the region experiences ongoing development, evident in the improved infrastructure of special attractions like Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak, Gili Tangkong, Gili Kedis, Kemos Beach, Elak-Elak Beach, Tawun Pier, and more, it becomes crucial to attract both local and international tourists. Enhancing human resources involves offering English language courses and cultivating a skilled workforce capable of tapping into the village's potential, serving as guides for tourists. It also entails empowering the youth to actively contribute to government initiatives in the tourism sector. The efforts to improve English communication skills, particularly through language courses, align with the UTM Community Service Institute's objectives and have shown positive results in West Sekotong Village, notably within the Tawun Hamlet community, over the course of a six-week service period.

Abstract

Vocabulary instruction is a critical component of early English language education, significantly contributing to the long-term language development of young learners. However, effectively selecting and applying teaching strategies that align with students’ cognitive and affective needs poses notable challenges, particularly for teachers in madrasah ibtidaiyah (Islamic primary schools). These challenges are often compounded by factors such as limited parental involvement, overcrowded classrooms, scarce teaching resources, and constrained instructional time. This study investigates the vocabulary teaching strategies employed by English for Young Learners (EYL) madrasah teachers and the difficulties they encounter in their implementation. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were gathered through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with groups of madrasah teachers. The findings reveal that strategies such as “listen and repeat” and “question and answer” were widely adopted, while approaches like “demonstration,” “brainstorming,” “translation,” and “outdoor activities” were used selectively based on students’ grade levels. Teachers consistently reported various obstacles, including low student motivation, diverse proficiency levels, limited instructional materials, and insufficient time allocated for English instruction. These insights highlight the need for context-responsive pedagogical support and resource development to enhance vocabulary learning outcomes in Islamic primary school settings.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Kegiatan abdimas ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa jurusan Manajemen Administrasi dan Komputerisasi Akuntasi di UTM Mataram dalam menggunakan pola kalimat aktif Simple Past Tense berbentuk positif, negatif, dan interogatif yang baik dan benar menggunakan media kartu bergambar atau flashcard. Selain itu, penggunaan media flashcard bertujuan untuk menyegarkan pikiran mahasiswa agar dapat memahami materi dengan cepat dengan cara yang menyenangkan sekaligus melatih kejelian, kecepatan, dan ketepatan menebak verba berbentuk past simple tense yang sesuai dengan gambar pada flashcards. Kegiatan diawali dengan melakukan observasi dan wawancara kepada mahasiswa untuk mengetahui kendala mereka dalam menggunakan bentuk waktu lampau dalam bahasa Inggris yaitu simple past tense. Kegiatan inti dilakukan dengan memaparkan materi tentang pola-pola dan contoh-contoh kalimat simple past tense dalam bentuk positif, negatif, dan interogatif disertai latihan menggunakannya dalam kalimat sesuai pola gramatikalnya. Kegiatan ditutup dengan diskusi-tanya jawab untuk mengetahui level pemahaman peserta serta kendala yang mungkin masih mereka hadapi. Sesuai hasil evaluasi, kegiatan abdimas ini telah mencapai tujuan yang ditargetkan, yakni: (1) peserta mampu mendeskripsikan dan membedakan pola-pola kalimat simple past tense berbentuk positif, negatif, dan interogatif; (2) peserta mampu menggunakannya dalam kalimat sesuai dengan pola masing-masing; dan (3) peserta mampu meningkatkan kecepatan dan kejeliannya membuat kalimat simple past tense menggunakan media flashcard dengan metode yang menyenangkan. ABSTRACT This community service aims at improving the ability of students majoring in Administration Management and Computerized Accounting at UTM Mataram to understand the simple past tense (positive, negative, interrogative) using picture flashcards. Picture flashcards can be good teaching resource to teach and study English verbs. Some of the benefits are to improve language skills, increase students’ ability to compose, memorize stories, and analyze a problem, and enrich students’ vocabulary. In addition to that, flashcards boost learners’ confidence, build up good and effective communication, and enhance creativity. Prior to the program, the team conducted a preliminary survey and interview to map students’ problems in understanding English tenses i.e. the simple past tense. The materials presented in the main activity included the patterns, examples, and sentence building practices of simple past tense using picture flashcards containing simple past verbs. The activity was ended with discussion, question and answer, and a questionnaire filling survey to trace participants’ understanding and remaining obstacles concerning the materials. Based on the evaluation, the program has achieved the targeted outcomes that include participants being able to: (1) describe and distinguish the patterns of simple past tense in positive, negative, and interrogative forms; (2) build grammatically correct simple past tense sentences; (3) increase the speed and foresight in building simple past tense sentences; and (4) cheerfully engage in grammar learning activities of the simple past tense using flashcards media.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Pembelajaran matematika memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam membangun pondasi yang kuat dalam pemahaman konsep, ide, gagasan, aturan, dan logika matematika. Dalam konteks ini, media pembelajaran, terutama dalam pembelajaran matematika, menjadi alat yang sangat membantu bagi guru dalam menyampaikan materi pelajaran dengan lebih efektif. Oleh karena itu, penting bagi guru untuk memahami betapa pentingnya peran media dalam pendidikan dasar, serta memiliki pengetahuan tentang berbagai jenis media yang dapat digunakan. Selain itu, guru juga perlu memiliki kemampuan dalam memilih media yang sesuai dengan materi pelajaran yang diajarkan, serta mampu merencanakan dan membuat media pembelajaran sendiri dengan menggunakan bahan-bahan yang sederhana, ekonomis, dan mudah didapatkan. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan dalam tiga tahap yang terstruktur dengan baik yakni tahap persiapan, tahap pelaksanaan, tahap penyampaian materi pelatihan, tahap evaluasi, dan tahap refleksi. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mahasiswa sebagai calon guru dalam merancang, membuat, dan menggunakan media pembelajaran edukatif matematika. ABSTRACT Learning mathematics fosters the development of essential foundational skills in comprehending concepts, ideas, rules, and logic within the subject, enabling students to apply reasoning and proof to solve real-life problems. Utilizing instructional media, particularly in mathematics classes, significantly aids teachers in effectively delivering the curriculum. Consequently, it is crucial for teachers in elementary education to grasp the purpose and significance of media, familiarize themselves with various media options, select appropriate ones for specific subjects, and be capable of planning and creating their own learning materials using simple, affordable, and easily accessible resources. The community service activities are implemented through three stages: Preparation Stage, involving the arrangement of training materials; Implementation Stage, where the training is conducted according to the established schedule; and Evaluation Stage, aimed at identifying any shortcomings or obstacles encountered during the implementation process. The outcomes derived from these service activities encompass enhanced knowledge and skills of prospective teachers in designing and utilizing educative learning media, specifically elementary mathematics teaching aids. Additionally, diverse teaching aids tailored to specific concepts have been developed to facilitate effective instruction in elementary mathematics.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Tujuan dari kegiatan abdimas ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan pola kalimat perintah (imperative sentence) dengan baik dan benar. Mahasiswa perlu memiliki kemampuan menggunakan kalimat imperatif dalam menyusun teks prosedural, terutama dalam matakuliah English for Tourism, yang mengharuskan mereka untuk dapat menjelaskan langkah-langkah atau prosedur dalam membuat minuman dan makanan khas daerah suku Sasak, Samawa, dan Mbojo di NTB. Hal ini penting karena NTB terkenal dengan pariwisatanya dan banyak turis internasional yang datang berlibur ke sana. Oleh karena itu, menjadi suatu keunikan jika mahasiswa lokal mampu menjelaskan kepada wisatawan asing cara membuat minuman dan makanan khas daerah mereka, seperti Pelecing Kangkung, Poteng jaja tujaq, Sepat, Minasarua, dan lain sebagainya. Hal ini akan menjadi daya tarik bagi wisatawan untuk lebih mengenal kekayaan wisata kuliner di NTB. Selain itu, ini juga akan meningkatkan kepercayaan diri mahasiswa dalam berkomunikasi dengan penutur asing dalam bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan dimulai dengan melakukan observasi awal dan wawancara untuk mengidentifikasi permasalahan yang dihadapi mahasiswa dalam menggunakan kalimat imperatif dalam bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan inti melibatkan penyampaian materi mengenai pola-pola dan contoh-contoh kalimat perintah dalam bentuk positif dan negatif, diikuti dengan latihan penggunaan pola gramatika yang tepat. Kegiatan diakhiri dengan diskusi dan tanya jawab untuk mengukur pemahaman peserta serta mengidentifikasi kesulitan yang masih dihadapi. Berdasarkan evaluasi, kegiatan ini berhasil mencapai tujuan yang ditetapkan, yaitu: peserta dapat memahami dan membedakan pola-pola kalimat imperatif positif dan negatif; peserta dapat menyusun kalimat yang sesuai melalui latihan terbatas; dan peserta dapat menghasilkan kalimat perintah untuk teks prosedural dan mempresentasikannya dengan cukup percaya diri untuk menjelaskan prosedur pembuatan beberapa jenis makanan dan minuman khas suku Sasambo di NTB. ABSTRACT The purpose of this community service program is to enhance students' ability to effectively and correctly use the pattern of imperative sentences. Indonesian EFL students need to be proficient in using imperative sentences when composing procedural texts, especially in the English for Tourism course, which in one of its learning objectives, requires them to describe the steps or procedures for preparing traditional drinks and dishes from the Sasak, Samawa, and Mbojo ethnic groups in NTB. This is important because NTB is very popular for its tourism, attracting many international tourists to visit. It would be unique and appealing to have local NTB students/youngsters capable of describing to foreign tourists how to prepare their traditional drinks and dishes, such as Pelecing Kangkung, Poteng Jaja Tujaq, Sepat, Minasarua, and others. This would not only be an opportunity to promote culinary tourism but also boost the students' confidence in communicating with English-speaking foreigners. The activity began with initial observation and interviews to identify the challenges that students faced in using imperative sentences in English. The main activity involved delivering materials on patterns and examples of positive and negative imperative sentences, followed by guided practice on using the appropriate grammatical patterns of imperative sentences. The program concludeed with discussions and question-and-answer sessions to assess the participants' understanding and identified any difficulties they might still encounter. Based on the evaluation, this program has successfully achieved its objectives: participants can comprehend and differentiate between positive and negative imperative sentence patterns; participants can construct suitable sentences through guided practice; and participants can produce imperative sentences for procedural texts and confidently do a mini presentation describing the procedures for making various traditional dishes and drinks from the Sasambo ethnic groups in NTB.

Abstract

Pembelajaran Abad 21 dan Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar menuntut guru dan siswa untuk memiliki literasi teknologi digital yang memadai (media and technology literacy), kesadaran kontekstual terhadap isu-isu di lingkungan mereka (environmental awareness), serta kemampuan untuk tetap relevan dan adaptif terhadap perkembangan zaman (flexible and adaptive to the changing world) dalam rangka mencetak individu yang cerdas secara akademis, terampil secara lingua franca, dan mampu memberikan solusi terhadap permasalahan yang ada di masyarakat. Kegiatan PKM ini merupakan lanjutan dari PKM sebelumnya yang bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan ketrampilan serta literasi digital guru-guru madrasah yang ada di wilayah kecamatan Gunungsari Lombok Barat dalam menggunakan teknologi aplikasi latihan dan asesmen berbasis digital unsur kebahasaan writing (menulis). Dengan adanya refleksi dan inovasi berbasis pengalaman, PKM ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan efektivitas pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis teknologi serta mendorong guru dan siswa untuk lebih adaptif dalam menghadapi tantangan pendidikan di era digital. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga berkontribusi dalam pengembangan IPTEKS (Ilmu Pengetahuan, Teknologi, dan Seni) dengan mengintegrasikan teknologi digital interaktif sebagai solusi inovatif dalam pembelajaran kebahasaan yang lebih efektif, menarik, dan sesuai dengan perkembangan zaman. Rencana luaran PKM ini antara lain publikasi pada jurnal terakreditasi SINTA 4, Publikasi pada media sosial Youtube atau Web Prodi, dan peningkatan pemahaman dan ketrampilan mitra.
