Abstract

The movie portrays aspects of human life, including ecological awareness, which extends beyond preserving natural elements like mountains and rivers to encompass human impact, waste, pollution, vehicles, and global warming. This research aims to examine how Toy Story 4 (2019) conveys ecological awareness through verbal and visual semiotics in selected scenes. The study focuses on a 3-minute and 20-second segment featuring Bonnie, the first character to display ecological awareness. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, 237 data points were analyzed based on theories by Kress Van Leeuwen, Baldry Thibault, and Halliday. These data were categorized into phases and sub-phases. While the film's utterances predominantly feature declarative moods (88%), along with imperative and interrogative moods (6% each), none directly address ecological themes. Instead, ecological awareness is visually represented in Toy Story 4 (2019) through visual grammar, particularly interactive meaning, to effectively illustrate and encourage environmental action for young audiences.

Abstract

This study examines sediment transport dynamics in the Melawi River, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, in response to illegal gold mining and uncontrolled sand mining activities. These activities have significantly increased sedimentation rates, negatively impacting the river ecosystem and local communities. This study used the Van Rijn method to analyse bottom sediment transport and suspended sediment transport at 12 monitoring sites along 900 km of the river. This study aims to analyse the rate of sediment transport and suspended sediment transport using the Van Rijn method. To plot the flow velocity and sediment concentration profiles. Derive mathematical equations from these graphs to predict sediment transport in the Melawi River. This comprehensive analysis will provide quantitative data on sediment transport rates, distribution patterns and predictive models of future sediment dynamics. The results will inform effective mitigation strategies, support sustainable river management and the well-being of communities along the Melawi River. The analysis showed that the bottom sediment transport of the Melawi River was 762,404 tonnes/year and the drift sediment transport was 190,245 tonnes/year, resulting in a total sediment transport of 952,649 tonnes/year.

Abstract

This research aims to develop and evaluate a deep learning-based iris detection system using a specialized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture. The research methodology includes data set preprocessing, CNN model design, training using Adam optimization, as well as evaluation using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score metrics. The dataset used was obtained from Kaggle and preprocessed before being divided into training, validation, and testing sets. The CNN model consists of three convolutional layers with increasing filter sizes (32, 64, and 128), ReLU activation, batch normalization, and MaxPooling layers for efficient feature extraction, as well as dropout regularization to reduce overfitting. Experimental results show that the proposed model achieves a high classification accuracy of 97.33%, with robust performance against variations and noise in iris images. Comparative analysis with traditional iris recognition methods confirms the superiority of deep learning in handling challenges such as lighting changes and occlusions. Although the results are promising, challenges such as data bias and computational demands are still a concern. Future research will explore more advanced architectures as well as additional pre-processing techniques to improve the generalizability and effectiveness of the system in real-world applications.

Abstract

Video game has been in high demand recently and the historical events as the settings of video games in Metal Gear Solid V series and Ghost of Tsushima make the story of the video games more immersive. However, how this video games story and their gameplay system interact are not addressed yet from social semiotic perspective. From this perspective, this study aims to analyze the story of two mentioned video games and how this story can be in balance with its gameplay system. This research also offers an alternative point of view of how narratology and ludology should collaborate in video game discourse.  This research used social semiotic approach, applying Kress and van Leeuwen Analysis on moving images and genre analysis by Martin and Rose. The data of this research are video game narratives and gameplay system This study used four steps: collecting, viewing and logging, taking sample, and analyzing the data in collecting and analyzing technique as an adaptation of the multimodal method from Bezemer and Jewitt. The result of this study shows that those selected video games were developed into what Ensslin stated about Mastery-Mentoring-Choice category for the protagonist. The meso-macro level of discourse in two mentioned video games allow the players to upgrade weapons and equipment without disturbing the flows of the story. In Metal Gear Solid V series, the stories flows with orientation-complication-temporary resolution pattern, and the gameplay allow players to upgrade the base because of having main mission to help other nations from colonialism. Meanwhile, in Ghost of Tsushima, the story flows with orientation-complication-resolution pattern and the gameplay allows players only to upgrade character skills because of having main mission to fight the invaders. Future scholars can address the micro-meso analysis in social semiotics and how the video game players make their choices.

Abstract

Abstract: As the gig economy era reshapes the global workforce, job readiness demands more than technical skills. Therefore, transformative thinking, creativity, and English competence become crucial. This study aims to explore how students from various backgrounds perceive the importance and the role of English competence, transformative thinking, and creative thinking in the gig economy era. Furthermore, this study also analyzes the relation between students’ socioeconomic background and their level of English competence toward their job readiness. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through a reflective instrument based on open-ended questions designed to explore students’ views and strategies in facing the challenges of the gig economy era. Fifty-one students with different characteristics, including high and low achievers and socioeconomic backgrounds, volunteered for the study. Thematic analysis was used to identify mindsets and work readiness that emerged from their narratives. The findings revealed that English competence is strongly related to self-confidence, professional communication effectiveness, and the ability to build global connections. Meanwhile, transformative and creative thinking encourages students to think critically, adapt to change, design creative solutions, and think outside the box. Furthermore, developing work readiness requires motivation, engagement, and reflective thinking because these qualities enable students to adapt, learn, and perform well regardless of their financial situation.

Abstract

There were so many movies that using onomatopoeia in their script. Onomatopoeia was when the sound of a word imitated what the word referred to. One of those movies was How To Train Your Dragon. Moreover. Words can be categorized as onomatopoeia if it fulfilled a certain condition and divided into three types of onomatopoeia. However there were types of sound that explained the processes and sources of that sound of words.  Because of that, this study wanted to analyze those two topics from the aspect of the references to the meaning of the signs. The data were collected and analyzed in five steps: 1) downloading the movie script from fandom.com, 2) transcribing in table of analysis, 3) analyzing the semiotic aspects of onomatopoeia using Peircian model and 4) classifying their types using Bredin’s theory and then 5) analyzing the process of onomatopoeia using semantic extension. This research found twenty one onomatopoeia that consist of thirteen direct onomatopoeia, six associative, and two exemplary. Also, the researcher have been gathered the type of sound. They were two voice – human, six voices – non-human, and twenty three noises, or sound produced by non-living this. Using these theories, onomatopoeic words can be further classified and analyzed both types and process, and these findings are expected to help the investigation of language analysis especially in analyzing onomatopoeia.

Abstract

Hoax news related to Covid 19 pandemic was spread in the US. In some cases, it is rather difficult to differentiate between real and fake news. Therefore, this study has an aim to analyse the evaluative features of online news using appraisal theory on the attitude subsystem. The appraising items focused on attitude division in the Huzlers about Corona Virus published in 2020 as the fake news and NBC news in 2012 as the real news regarding to the use of Meth to deal with Flu virus. Both news are American Media and were published online. This main purpose of this research is to explain the realization of fake and real news with the similar topics. The data used in this study was taken from Huzlers and NBC news and was collected in three steps: comparing, intensive reading, and transcribing. Moreover, the data were analysed into three steps: classifying, categorizing and analysing using Attitude theory which is one of appraisal theory aspects in SFL discourse semantics (Martin, J. R., & Rose 2007, Martin & White 2005, Martin 2019). The results of this study found that both news, real and fake news are dominated by appreciation. However, in fake news there is a tendency that the positive polarity is used to favour meth drugs, meanwhile in real news, it shows the polarity in balance. In addition, in fake news, there is also a tendency to use judgment to appraise the people involved in the meth drugs research.

Abstract

Racism has become the biggest social issue in the world because of its constant unjust treatment that affects people from minority races, ethnicities, and religions. Related to this issue, The Hate U Give conveys the social condition where racial disparity towards black people is profoundly represented in the narrative. This study focuses on identifying the ideational metafunction elements, including transitivity and ergativity patterns found in the narrative. It reveals how the racial disparity is performed by the use of the meta function. Mixed method research was employed to collect and analyze the data to yield more insightful information that complements both methodologies’ findings. The theory of Systemic Functional Grammar was used to identify and classify the ideational metafunction elements from the collected narrative, and the Discourse Analysis approach was applied as a theoretical approach to support the observation. The result concluded that in the analysis of transitivity patterns, material and relational processes dominate the narrative by approximately 25% to 33% of the entire collected narrative. The findings show that racial disparity in analyzing black people that was performed by law enforcement in the collected narrative is manifested in three forms: police brutality, racial profiling, and sentencing policy.
