Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the effect of glycerol and chitosan addition toward biodegradability of cellulose based rice waste water, the effect of biodegradation time toward mass lost and biodegradability, and determine functional group and crystalinity of the highest biodegradability composite. Bacterial celluloses were prepared from 100 mL rice waste water that fermented by Acetobacter xylinum for 7 days with addition of glycerol (for Cellulose-Glycerol and Cellulose-Glycerol-Chitosan). Then, bacterial celluloses were immersed in chitosan solution (for Cellulose-Chitosan and Cellulose-Glycerol-Chitosan). The water in bacterial cellulose and its composites was removed by heating, then deposited silver nanoparticle  on the bacterial cellulose and its composite. The silver nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction with using AgNO3 solution, trisodium citric as reducing agent, and gelatin as stabilizer. The silver nanoparticle was deposited into bacterial cellulose and its composites film by immersing method. After that, the bacterial cellulose and its composites were biodegradated by soil burrial test method for 14 days. Then, cellulose with the highest biodegradability was characterized by ATR-FTIR and XRD. The silver nanoparticle formation was showed by UV-Vis spectrum with peak in the 418.8 nm area. The glycerol addition can increase biodegradability, whereas the chitosan addition can decrease biodegradability. The increasing of biodegradation time, mass lost increased but the biodegradability decreased. After biodegradation, intensity of pyran cyclic in cellulose-glycerol which is deposited Ag (SG + Ag)  decreased, but crystallinity of it increased. Abstract

Polybutylene itaconate (PBI) for modification with divinyl benzene (DVB) and glycerol has been synthesized at 180 °C for 3 h via polycondensation of itaconic acid (IA) and butanediols using catalyst of Ti(OBu)4. Modification on PBI was done with addition of 15%, 20% and 25% DVB (w/w) using benzoyl peroxide. With glycerol, weight variations of glycerol:1,4-butanediol (BDO) in the synthesis were 10%, 30%, and 50% (mole/mole). PBI and PBI modified with DVB and glycerol were characterized with FTIR and TG-DTA. PBI showed a wavenumber shift from 1703 cm-1 to 1728 cm-1 of the C=O functional group from acid to esther. The DVB modification on PBI also showed that the intensity decrease of C=C stretching was due to the formation of crosslinking on the double bond. In the modification with glycerol, three dimensional networking on the polyester occurred through bonding between hydroxyl of glycerol and acid group of IA. Constant intensity of C=C stretching on polyester was seen. The thermal stability of PBI modified with DVB increased, accompanied by rigidity change of the structure. The thermal stability of PBI modified with glycerol decreased, caused by the decrease of regularity degree and the elasticity increase of the three dimensional structure of polyester.

Abstract

The 21st-century chemistry learning that teaches abstract and complex concepts needs to develop learning media that can increase students' learning motivation and visualize abstract concepts in chemistry. One of the media in the 21st century developed in this study is Android-based augmented reality media. The purpose of this study was to test the validity of the Android-based Augmented Reality media and see the differences in perceptions between teachers and students in assessing media. The validation of android-based Augmented Reality learning media uses a questionnaire and is quantitative. The Rater for assessing the product consisted of 6 senior chemistry teachers at 5 different schools in Surakarta and 20 students who had obtained the material for covalent bonding at SMA N 1 Ngemplak Boyolali. The data obtained were analyzed by Rasch Model using Facets software. The results of the analysis show that exact agreements are 35.1% and exacted agreements are 35.2%. This happens because the aspects are considered easy by the teacher, but the students consider these aspects difficult. The aspect or item that is considered the most difficult to achieve is the suitability of the example with the material and improving understanding of the material. Based on this research, in developing media, it must be packaged properly so that it is easily understood and understood by students

Abstract

The impact of integrating the Common Knowledge Construction Model (CKCM) with Chemical Bonds-focused Podcasts on students' collaboration skills and cognitive learning achievements is investigated in this study. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with cluster random sampling to select the experimental (N=23) and control (N=30) classes from a private high school in Solo City. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted, employing the Mann-Whitney test for hypothesis testing. Results showed that the CKCM approach significantly enhanced collaboration skills (p < 0.001) and learning achievements (p = 0.014), indicating substantial educational benefits. In conclusion, integrating the CKCM with Chemical Bonds podcasts positively influenced students' collaboration skills and cognitive learning achievements. Moreover, this comprehensive model addressed conventional learning objectives and integrated elements of ethnoscience, providing students with a broader and more culturally contextualized understanding. The CKCM model, supplemented by podcasts, facilitated a dynamic learning environment that actively engaged students in knowledge construction. These findings advocate for integrating CKCM and podcasts into educational curricula, offering a scalable model for enhancing 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of the Dilemmas approach, rooted in transformative learning, on enhancing critical thinking skills in buffer chemistry subjects among high school students. Employing a mixed-methods design and purposive sampling, the research involved 34 eleventh-grade students from SMAN 1 Surakarta. The implementation of dilemma stories integrated with a 5E learning cycle was scrutinized using various data collection methods, including observations, student reflective journals, pretest-posttest assessments, the Constructivist Chemistry Values Learning Environment Survey (CCVLES), and interviews. Observations assessed the application of the dilemma stories and the 5E learning cycle. Pretest-posttest evaluations measured changes in students' critical thinking abilities, while reflective journals and CCVLES questionnaires captured students' perceptions of their critical thinking skills and their learning experiences. Interviews were conducted to validate the findings from the tests, journals, and questionnaires. Data analysis involved reduction, display, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The findings suggest that the Dilemmas approach significantly fosters students' ability to think critically and apply chemical concepts practically. This was evidenced by students' analyses of dilemma stories and responses in interviews, CCVLES questionnaires, and reflective journals, indicating a deeper engagement with and understanding of the subject matter through this innovative learning strategy.

Abstract

High consumption of coal as a source of electrical energy in Indonesia has resulted in piles of waste from coal burning, namely fly ash, which can damage the environment and harm health. Fly ash contains main oxides, namely silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3), whose components are similar to zeolite, so they can be synthesized into zeolite-like material (ZLM) which can be used as an adsorbent for heavy metal Ni2+. Therefore, this research discussed the characterization of manganese-oxide-coated-zeolite (MOCZ) from fly ash waste as a heavy metal adsorbent. The research procedure consisted of preparation, purification, and activation stage of fly ash to obtain fly ash that is free from impurities, the stage of making sodium silicate and sodium aluminate, and zeolite synthesis. The resulting zeolite was then coated with manganese oxide to expand the surface area of the zeolite and increase the ability of zeolite to adsorb heavy metal Ni2+. The research results showed that fly ash waste that was coated with manganese oxide can adsorb heavy metal Ni2+. The adsorption of the Ni2+ metal ion solution by zeolite with MOCZ modification is in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm.
