Abstract

AbstractAs young learners like to learn in a fun atmosphere with engaging interactions, the present study argues that when children learn English as a foreign language, implementing games in teaching English can benefit young learners. The research was conducted following the library research method, where the content of the research from previous studies on English for young learners and the benefits of using games in teaching English for young learners were collected with the keywords "young learners", "traditional games", and "online games." The sources were selected from articles published in reputable international and accredited national journals from 2010-2022. The result of this study shows that two types of games can be chosen such as traditional and online games. The implementation of each type of game in teaching has strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions to improve the quality to help young learners learn. Overall, young learners will get more positive impacts due to the implementation of both traditional and online games. They can be recommended as strategies to teach English to young learners. How to Cite: Suwastini, Ni Komang A., Radhaswati, I Dewa A. Abstract

The 21st century has brought technology that connects people around the world, creating the necessity for bilingualism to facilitate international and intercultural communications created from the global interactions. Yet, there are still disputes on the benefits of bilingualism beyond communications and the need for achievement in language learning. Thus, the present study aimed to review previous studies on bilingualism and provide a comprehensive summary on the benefits of bilingualism. The study employed a model of library research from George (2008), where previous studies on bilingualism selected following certain criteria were then critically reviewed to synthesize their arguments on the benefits of bilingualism. The review revealed that bilingualism can benefit students’ cognitive development, problem-solving, communicative competence, academic performance, and cultural awareness. Additionally, bilingualism is also argued to provide health benefits because it can maintain brain functioning and delay degenerative cognitive function diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer. Thus, being bilingual contributes to the development of students’ 21st Century skills.

Abstract

Conventional learning models that are often used in elementary schools tend to be teacher-centric and provide less opportunities for students to collaborate and learn actively. This results in low collaboration skills and student learning outcomes, especially in science subjects. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model in improving students' collaboration skills and science learning outcomes. The subject of this study is grade V students of SD Group VI, Abiansemal District, which consists of an experimental group taught using the TGT model and a control group taught using a conventional learning model. The research method used is a quasi-experiment with a non-equivalent control group design, involving quantitative data analysis through normality, homogeneity, ANOVA, and MANOVA tests to test hypotheses. The results showed that there was a significant difference in collaboration skills and science learning outcomes between the group of students taught with the TGT model and the group of students taught with the conventional model. The average score of collaboration ability and science learning outcomes of students in the TGT group is in the very high category, while the conventional group is in the high category. The TGT model has been proven to be able to create a learning environment that supports social interaction, increases student motivation, and provides a fun and meaningful learning experience. The implications of this study show that the TGT model can be used as an effective learning alternative to improve the quality of education, especially in developing 21st century skills such as collaboration and critical thinking, so it is recommended to be widely implemented in elementary schools and further developed at different levels of education.

Abstract

This present study explored the representation of environmental harmony in Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis through the lens of local framework, Palemahan derived from Balinese philosophy called Tri Hita Karana. Former studies in Prince Caspian mostly utilized moral, religious, or western eco-critical perspectives, that tend to view environments or nature as objects that need to be protected or managed, while overlooking local philosophical views that regard nature as a living and sacred partner in human existence. This study therefore applies Palemahan as an alternative interpretative lens, employing qualitative interpretive data analysis with an interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The data were obtained from a close reading of the 2008 HarperCollins e-book of Prince Caspian, focusing on Lucy Pevensie’s characterization and her interactions with the natural environment. The findings show Lucy’s engagement with the environment reflects Palemahan values through the affectionate gesture, respect, and emotional connection rather than obligation or domination. Her relationship with the environment emerged from the harmonious feeling from within, aligned with the Palemahan view that see nature carries a sacred presence.  Conceptually, this study highlights Tri Hita Karana, particularly Palemahan as the interpretative framework that is meaningful in literary analysis. Pedagogically, the findings suggest that children’s literature can introduce environmental awareness rooted in harmony, not merely responsibility.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English as a Second Language (ESL), but students often face obstacles in understanding and remembering new vocabulary. In this study, the researcher systematically examined the use of ChatGPT in vocabulary learning and explored its influence on vocabulary development. This study uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design with PRISMA guidelines. Data were collected from academic journal articles published between 2018 and 2025 through the Google Scholar database, resulting in 16 relevant studies that were analyzed based on strict inclusion criteria. The analytical result indicates that teaching using ChatGPT significantly impacts students' vocabulary acquisition in the context of EFL and ESL. ChatGPT can be effective in improving vocabulary retention through interactive explanations, contextual examples, and direct feedback. In addition, the study findings highlight an increase in student engagement, motivation, and learning independence, as well as a decrease in anxiety in language use. Despite challenges related to response accuracy and digital literacy, this study concludes that ChatGPT is a potential instructional tool when integrated with appropriate pedagogical guidance.
